I'm looking at the indicative draft order for round four and seeing a great opportunity for drama here.

We currently sit on picks #58, #64 then west coast have #65.

This is where I would pick up the prospective WA player.

Current list:
#11, #46, #58, #64, #82

I'm hoping that if we lose a free agent that we can get into the second round again.

So West Coast would know that if they want Tim Kelly they would need to use their 3rd rounder pick 47.

So we would have to use our 3rd rounder pick 46 to pip them.

We don't have any free agent on our list that'll get us into the 2nd round.

Why do you leave out getting pick 34 as well. All things considered, for downgrading pick 3 to pick 7 we got McCarthy AND Hamling. While I like that your trying to argue we'll get a second rounder for Balic, you cant use McCarthy as an example. Both teams won that trade. GWS couldnt give a shit about pick 34 and McCarthy since they had to jettison players and cap space as fast as possible but we turned pick 3 into Logue, Hamling and McCarthy. The McCarthy trade is a terrible example, GWS got what they wanted because they were in a position to "lose" a trade on face value but "win" given the circumstances
Top explanation. Another factor for GWS was that pick 3 gave them a pick before any realistic bids on Academy kids came into play, whereas pick 7 was vulnerable.

I think Tim Kelly and Liam Ryan are the two most likely mature age WAFL players to get drafted but I'm not convinced clubs will be willing to spend too early on them. Luke Ryan was clearly the best VFL and mature age prospect last year and lasted well past where almost everyone expected him to go. I think all three are similar in that there have been question marks over their commitment which is why they weren't drafted in previous years, and many of those concerns still exist. I'd have no problem having all three on our list as they fit our age demographic well and could shore up our depth in a number of areas but you'd be gambling on their success similarly to how we did with Yarran.

I'd also still be keeping any eye on Jarrod Garlett (irrespective of his relative poor showing in WAFL this year) who is another high risk, potentially high reward prospect. And I'm also still a little confused why Marlion Pickett wasn't considered for at least a spot on a someone's rookie list last year. All cheap options due to the high risk but if we're going to compete against clubs like GWS with a million first rounders we have to take some significant gambles with late picks.

I hope the club looks at the free agency market this year tbh. I highly doubt that Ibbo, Suban or Ballantyne get offered any more than two years by other clubs (even that's pushing it IMO). That'd get us a third rounder at best. We aren't losing Fyfe IMO but will match if we do so the fact he's a free agent is all but irrelevant. They may not be anyone that interests us (outside of highly unrealistic types like Martin, Pittard etc) but if there is the club won't think twice over a third rounder.

Probably won't get anyone but we are talking like it's impossible - it isn't. If Fyfe, S.Hill and Walters can be big parts of this rebuild so can someone else around the same age (1991 born youngest possible this year), especially if we are trying to win a premiership with these guys in the side.

Jackson Trengrove from Port at 197cm is available for free agency, guys around that height are always
handy.

According to the Nick Bowen on the AFL site there is 'preliminary interest' in Suban from some clubs in his home state
Really, where was this reported? My old man kept joking about this the other week. One of the clubs would be Carlton if this is actually a thing.

Suban for Cripps seems fair.

Scroll down to Suban, it's immediately followed by 'his future won't become clear til later in the year' so probably just some blanket response from his manager

I would read nothing into this. This time last year when Brad Hill announced he would be heading west a muted trade and person of interest for Hawks (according to afl.com.au) was none other than Clancee 'fish pub' Pearce. I still remember the photo-shopped pictures of a smiling Rosco driving the car with Clancee as passenger.

Yeah fair call but it's still better than 'little to no interest', especially at this time of year

Also Barlow was regarded as someone who had 'preliminary interest from a number of clubs' right up until trade week

We can hope though

View attachment 379644 I think we should throw a bit of $$$$ at this guy
Why? IMO good player and fits a need of a ruck/forward but the cost would surely outweigh the value? He is 28 this year and given his injury record you would think he probably has another 3-4 years in him max? Unlike say Sandilands, his speed and mobility is a key part of his game, but that is the bit that goes the quickest with age.

If Darcy is our next permanent ruck then such a move would possibly eat into opportunities to develop him (look already at what happens with Griffin).

If bringing him in meant the difference between being a top four contender and being an also/and then yes do it but IMO he is not in himself propel us into that space.
