What type of player to Draft in the first round could really hinge on free agency, trade. If we can find a ruck/forward outside
of the draft? Otherwise Coleman Jones is probably on the radar.
I think this is our first priority, and we all know how hard it is to find/replace tall talent.
There is always more midfield, flankers available to draft later, mature age plug and play types, but finding a quality key
position player?

With a serious lack of depth I think we need to think out of the box.

I would like us to use the 2 experimental rookie positions for people who have not played football for 3 years e.g. Greenwood or Irish recruits.

If we are targeting Irish players then really should target the quick players who can play on the HBF. There is nothing to loose, other than money and we have enough of that.

A bit of a Hail Mary that. Not sure it has worked in the past for us. Plus, Greenwood is tied up at the Magpies....

I think it is going to be interesting to see what our recruiting strategy will be in the next 2 years. There will be the obvious players that will retire or we move on in the next couple of years (Johnson, Ibbo, D Pearce, Suban, Dawson, Z Clarke, Spurr, Ballas, Mundy, Sandi, Griffen probably some I have forgotten).

If Tabener is still on our list in 2 years then we have problems.

Hopefully we can trade on Sutcliffe and Sheridan and get some late round picks for them.

Fingers crossed for Bennell, A Pearce and Apeness (injury has made it impossible to rate his worth but give him the benefit) to make full recoveries and be playing uninterrupted. Darcy should be ready to take over the ruck duties by then.

Whilst they have been woeful the past 3 weeks I think McCarthy and Kersten will play and look better in a team that is structured and playing well. A proper KPF in the team may see better suited roles for these 2. Worse case, Kersten is depth.

That will leave a core of players from about 28 (Fyfe and S Hill I think will be the eldest) to 23-ish, with some significant holes on our list still to be filled.

Will we go to the draft as advertised and get young "best available" or "best fit" players with our early picks knowing that we may be waiting for 2 - 3 years before these guys can make an impact (refer Logue), in which time the older players on our list will probably be past it and looking to retire;
or
do we trade for experienced players to fill the holes with an age profile which will suit our squad in 2 years and in line with any crack at a flag we may think we have?

Interesting times.

The Adelaide crows Greeenwood :)

Agree the core is there, and we need to build the rest quickly before they get too old. When we have potentially 10-12 players leaving the club this year I don't see any harm in bringing in two irish men who can potentially be good HBF for us.

I think we've already committed to rebuilding through the draft, as per our past two trade/draft periods. I think we need to target a KPF with our first pick, whether that mean picking up the best KPF at our pick or trading our first pick for a KPF.

I would rather give TK a go than perservere with Suban, Sheridan and Sutcliffe.
The state game against the Vics showed we have great talent under our noses, maybe the later picks should be used on these guys as we have done the last couple of drafts - speculate on a few of the young fellas that have kept at it give them the opportunity to be full time footballers - you will get busts like Yarren - silly bugger, but we could definitely do better than persisting year after year with guys that continually never quite get there.
Play em, see what they can do - keep or flick them. The coaches should be able to tell in 2 years if there is anything there or not- it is thier job to.
Speaking of which, I'm stunned Mason Shaw never made it as an AFL player. His jnr highlights are something else.

A North recruiter was at the Freo/Collingwood game a couple of weeks back looking at 4 uncontracted (or soon to be uncontracted) players (3 Freo & 1 Collingwood). The 3 Freo guys were Langdon, Hughes and Crozier and he left unimpressed by each of them.

Im still scratching my head as to why Hughes was dropped over Sutcliffe after that game.

Sutcliffe has been terrible for the past two years. He had a serviceable 2013 as a sub and in 2014 had semi decent skills coming off the backline. Since then he's seriously regressed and is good for bombing it blindly out of defence directly to an opposition player a couple of times a game.

Hughes can certainly have brain fades, but has brute strength and can read the ball well in the air and take a decent mark, seriously wtf.

Our state team was much older and more experienced than the Victorian side and included far more ex-AFL rejects and/or players in their late 20s who are almost zero chance of being drafted. Kelly will get drafted but I remember at the time posters on this board saying he's the only one that looked like an AFL player. To be fair to our posters most of the guys they want us to draft weren't playing that day. Ryan and Baker didn't play for example. WAFL beat the VFL side but the VFL side will have more players drafted. No ones drafting Saunders, Horsely, Notte, Strijk, Ames, Jetta etc.

When you say trading, who are you thinking of? I can't see any KPF on offer, certainly not that can picked up for our first round. Mind you I am struggling to see the KPF as well - it is either Forward / Ruck or another inbetween (191 - 194) height.

Was really over here to offer Suban a 4 year contract.
