List Mgmt. 2018-19 DFA & SSP Period (Midseason Draft after Round 10)

My answer would be "Exceptionally short on small forwards".

Small forwards by nature: Fasolo, Lebois
Small forwards by necessity: Cuningham, Garlett, Pickett, Polson
Small mids that can go forward: Murphy, Fisher, SPS, Walsh, Thomas, Gibbons, Lang
Small somethings that I can't place: Cottrell, Owies

I understand that you think it's OK to just rotate some smaller mids through that spot, and I can see the appeal in having more mid rotations in the side. I do believe it's necessary to have at least one specialist in that position. Someone who thinks of themselves as a small forward who can go through the middle, rather than a mid who can go forward.

We don't have many of those - Fasolo for sure, Lebois who can't stay on the park, maybe Pickett and Garlett though they're often described as being more suited to playing up the ground, then we're into the speculative rookie picks who are nowhere near the grade yet. Our forward line is in desperate need of a crafty small forward who hunts the ball, and the man. I think our tall forwards would relish having someone consistently buzzing around their feet, someone they can build real synergy with and with whom they can start to work all those deft little taps to advantage into their games.

One full time small forward should be a priority, no doubt in my mind.
Thanks for that "Exceptionally short on small forwards"...…...………........"One full time small forward should be a priority...."

Exactly how I see it and suggested, in relation to the top team

To add, barring a miracle, I see Fasolo, Pickett, Garlett and Lang as all or minimum 3 from 4 gone come seasons end, add rookie LeBois to that list. We will
likely need three more forward/mid types added through the draft (or trade/FA). You alluded to Cottrell and Owies, both would be quality pressure types. Cottrell is more mid and Owies is still finding his feet after a few years on the basketball court. I certainly wouldn't discount either yet as many seem to have. Polson is at worst depth for another year if he doesn't come on in the role.

Personally, would not be against retaining our (Adelaide's) first pick and taking the best available small forward candidate rather than chase anything but
the very best trade targets. We already have the list to play finals, albeit in a year or two, with a few more games in to them.

I am. Reasoning is for the List management thread but Finbar is a Xavier mate of BSOS - smacks of nepotism. We could have got much better value with that pick than another tall.

Cottrell is long term project - looks interesting - but for where we are at we need more impact now. We have the talent and will get more at the top end of future drafts. We don’t need long term risky projects.

Just my opinion....
The fact that we took "another tall" is beside the point but I agree we could have done better than Finbar, and Cortrell, for that matter. I would have even preferred Brazier.

Here's the real kicker: we could have picked Brazier and brought in a GAA recruit, and still had both of those picks.

I'm not convinced Silvagni wasted a pick on someone just because he's friends with his son.

SOS was not trying to build a list to win the flag this year.
It's possible that he saw more of him than other recruiters because he was a friend of the family, and saw something in him.

Hopefully he's right.

Pick 1: Tom Boyd

Come on the rookie list with a bunch of young kids.

Enjoy the game again and have some fun. Maybe things will turn around :)

Didn't we say the same thing about Cuningham when he was recruited at the same time JSOS was, how is that turning out ?
I don't think JSOS and Cunningham are any more or less close friends amongst the group, are they?

Anyway, to me it looks like they thought the talent was a bit thin on the ground with such late picks (which I brought up here, too, when we were trading for McGovern) so they tried for some 'feel good' stories with late selections, with the O'Dwyer situation and Cottrell being such a huge Blues fan (or so I gather) and related to a former Carlton player. I'm not saying they didn't think those players had a bit of talent to work with, I'm suggesting they might not have been playing the percentages at that point. If that's true, my issue's not with sentimentality, I applaud that, my problem would be with them not looking hard enough for options.

With the talent on our list, it is now time for playing percentages with later picks and mid-season drafts. We are on the rise. We’ve just got to not handicap ourselves by using list spots on risky projects.

Sure there’ll be a club nibbling if it’s possible but not sure how it al works with contracts (2021 was his final year but apparently ‘20 & 21 are being forfeited, that’s another query however on poaching a player on the massive coin). FYI - Buddy’s contract gets put on Sydney’s books for the full term of his contract irrespective if he plays/retires (not sure on ruling for all FA’s prior to his signing or an AFL nose out of place decision).

GCFC did the same with Garlett under compassionate grounds but he was back soon after.

Dunkley or Hirst for mine.

What you want to see for an overager is improvement.

The knock on Hirst last draft was height, weight and accumulation. He has grown a couple of cms and added 5kgs plus since then. He was injured after 5 games last year so that went against him.

These 3 lines are his average stats for 2017, 2018 and 2019 thus far:

Can't argue against that improvement in accumulation.

That's a late bloomer if I ever saw one.

Good skills, pace, tank, can go forward, back or wing and has improved his deficiencies from last year.

Edit: And the best agility testing at the combine beating Stephen Hill's record.

Cody Hirst. 178cm 67kg Eastern Ranges Quick fwd/wing/def has good goal sense, defensive pressure averaging 4.5 tackles , elite agility smashed S.Hills agility record twice at combine, flexible can play multiple positions, injured last season which effected his chances of being drafted after being highly regarded... information off draft central...

Paul Hasleby is pissed that Hayden Schloithe can't get a spot. I kind of agree. I wanted him 2 years back.

Well....WC traded into a few 2nd rounders in Kelly’s draft year trying to get him about where he was worth. They have since, and still are moving heaven and earth to get him back there.

There have been many opportunities to draft Schloithe since pick 24 that Geelong took him at 2 years ago for both WA clubs...

There must be some major deficiencies in his game, what are they?

He's fat.

He's extremely one-paced.

I’m looking at this draft as a chance to get a 2nd or 3rd round pick/player for free. Without this draft all of these players would have been in the draft with some of them going as high as the second round.

If we nail this pick it is essentially getting a free hit. We have 16 weeks to decide if they make the grade, I hope our recruiting team have been working hard, this is where you make a name for yourselves.
