The Matildas are the top ranked nation. There are two groups of 4, for some reason the top 3 ranked team are in our group. Australia (#6), Japan (#11) and South Korea (#15). China (#16) will top their group with Thailand (#30) finishing 2nd.

Japan beat Vietnam 4-0
Australia drew with South Korea 0-0
Japan drew with South Korea 0-0
Australia lead Vietnam 5-0 at HT :)

Our big game is Friday night at 11:45pm when we play Japan (Fox Sports 1).

6-0 now, Sam Kerr with a 2nd to take her international tally to 23, Kyah Simon with 1 to go to 24.

Both catching up to Joanne Peters (1996–2009) in 5th who scored 28 goals in 110 apps.

Darn South Koreans and their bore draws.

Big one right here! Let's take out top seed with a good win. A loss likely means a 5th place match, and a draw... hmm...

  1. Points in head-to-head matches among tied teams;
  2. Goal difference in head-to-head matches among tied teams;
  3. Goals scored in head-to-head matches among tied teams;
  4. If more than two teams are tied, and after applying all head-to-head criteria above, a subset of teams are still tied, all head-to-head criteria above are reapplied exclusively to this subset of teams;
  5. Goal difference in all group matches;
  6. Goals scored in all group matches;
  7. Penalty shoot-out if only two teams are tied and they met in the last round of the group;
  8. Disciplinary points (yellow card = 1 point, red card as a result of two yellow cards = 3 points, direct red card = 3 points, yellow card followed by direct red card = 4 points);
  9. Drawing of lots.

So in other words, thanks to South Korea's bore draws, a draw will see Australia progress as top seed because of out superior GD, regardless of the score of the draw. It means Japan will come out to really get that win.

No matter, it's always good to put Japan away, so let's do just that tonight!

1-1 FT against Japan with Kerr equalizing in the 86th minute.

This result means we top the group and qualify for the 2019 World Cup.

Australia, Japan and South Korea all finish on 5 points.

SEMIS: Australia v Thailand, China v Japan.

Sam Kerr and Kyah Simon both on 24 international goals now.

Korea defeated the Philippines 5-0 to claim 5th place as well as the final place at the 2019 World Cup.

SF1: Australia play Thailand tonight at 11:45pm

SF2: China play Japan at 3:00am tomorrow

We scraped through 3-1 in penalties after the game was level 2-2 AET. But we rested a number of our better players thinking we’d easily win.

Japan beat China 3-1 in the other SF.

One of the worse things about last nights performance was how lethargic the switches of play were. The Thai's often got 9 players back, but there were times when they only had 6 or 7 behind the ball and we had it in the midfield and there was just a lack of urgency to be incisive with quick connecting passes and create something that would not allow their defenders a chance to position themselves back into a wall.

Also, the Matildas defence is 2nd rate without Claire Polkinghorne. Even in the 5-0 defeat of Thailand in the friendly in Perth, the Thai's created a handful moments where they could have gotten over the back if it wasn't for Polkinghorne covering everyone's arse.

China dominate the 2nd half and win 3-1 to take 3rd place. The win also secures automatic qualification for the next Asian Cup.

Thanks to Jordan hosting and being seeded, South Korea finished 5th rather than making the semi finals. Host teams should not be seeded.

A thoroughly s**t performance from Australia.

60% possession and 23 shots to 5 in our favour
A missed penalty by a player that has scored once in 94 appearances
Japan score in the 84th minute
FT Japan d Australia 1-0
