Dont get to carried away, the T20 had a bigger crowd than the AFLW, and they had theater goers wanting to experience the new stadium. Reverse the venues and what crowds would you expect?
It would be the first AFLW game at the MCG, so could easily get 30k

Im saying on a Saturday night in Melbourne 40,000 (by the way it looked a lot less with the famous MCC members barely half full ) for an International T20 against England is piss poor!

This is more plausible than some might think. Facilities are more modern, transport and parking options are better, theres no danger of a lockout to deter people, and its a chance to get in the MCG for free/cheap that some might not take otherwise during the season - especially people with kids.

Even with the free entry the Pies are only playing the Dockeretts not a Melb based side. 10K would be pushing it.

It was average but not piss poor. Domestic T20 is more popular judging by attendances of the T20 matches this year in Hobart and Sydney. It has also been a long summer of cricket.I think that pattern has happened in previous years as well.

it was expected.

I was very surprised at the size of the crowd considering the weather and the GWS in Sydney Bodes well for the future of this comp

Had look at the womens soccer this arvo and a pretty ordinary crowd for the "world"game thats supposed to have a lot of females playing!

Yeh, I flicked onto a W-League semi-final being played in Sydney, and across the whole outer wing, and either end of the ground, there was literally not a single soul there.

Just 3800 at Casey fields yesterday, noticeably less than last week.

Pretty embarrassing for Melbourne when they are outdone by a gws crowd the same weekend.

Dees women may need to look for an alternate venue because Casey doesn't seem to attract their fans.
Demons AFL fans are notorious for not wanting to leave the MCG and it seems that attitude applies to their AFLW team as well.

Also seems to be alot of rounded crowd figures in AFLW.

What did you expect? Casey Fields is in the middle of no where at the arse end of Cranbourne with little or no atmosphere
Im surprised they got that many against Adelaide TBH!

Exactly why I'm suggesting they may consider changing their home venue. Their side is playing the most high scoring, attractive brand of footy in yhe AFLW yet they can't attract a crowd.

up against the Winter Olympics on the main channel, and a t20 international that outrated that.

Impact of new AFLW app unknown.

Yeah it has certainly copped a lot more competition this year with the BBL stretching into round 1, T20 internationals and now the winter olympics

The AFLW is in competition with other sports for audience. It's clearly uncompetitive against them. Even if it had clear air it still wouldnt explain the incredibly sharp drop in ratings from last year.

Probably not but in combination with a drop in "novelty" factor it could.

Given it didnt have clear air, its a little hard to tell now isnt it.
