Amazing thread, I check this weekly.

The Crows will be an interesting one: if the worst happens with Sloane they could potentially have four top 20 picks.

I wonder if they would have any temptation to flip these picks for #1 and #2 and take the locals in Lukosius and Rankine.

Its a nice dream but when you look at it , its difficult to manage. Looking at the list most teams seem very light on or the gap between 1st and 2nd picks are too big.

There seems to be 2 teams that could give an early pick away and that Port and Gold Coast. I think Dew would like to start building his own empire so they wont. Port need the next gen in place. After having 4 under 31 two years ago , having 3 under 30 this year gives them a nice springboard.

Adelaide dont hold enough that Carlton and Brisbane would do it . 5/19 isnt getting 1 and 11/12 (compo) isnt getting 2. Its a nice thought but I cant see it.

Lukosius would basically have say he’s going home after his rookie contract for team to pass on him at pick.

If Brisbane had pick 1, Lukosius is just to good to pass on.

We’ve already briefly discussed this on the Lions board.

Wouldn’t like it, but picks 5 and ~10 might just be enough to part with pick 1. Would probably do 5 and ~10 for pick 2.

Basically we’d want a top 5 and a top 10 pick back.

From a Brisbane viewpoint, I’d consider trading our 2019 first round pick to get back in to the 5 to 10 range. Don’t believe any team would do this.

I didn't say he would be passed over - or do you mean Brisbane wouldn't be willing to take the trade?

The latter. Brisbane has two big holes to fill. A quality KPF to pair with Hipwood (because Hipwood is not a number 1 KPF) and midfielders. Lukosius is just to good to pass up, even at the expense of seriously boosting our midfield with two first round picks.

Did you still want Jenkins?

Lots of talk in the last few days about a Carlton priority pick - what are the odds of that? I'd suggest low, given Brisbane supposedly asked for one last year and got nowhere.
Brisbane have finished:
2015 17th

2016 17th (beat an Essendon side missing 3/4 of their team due to the drug cheating on percentage - really we should have been 18th)

We applied for a PP and received an end of first round PP. Which we traded, the net result ended up getting us Charlie Cameron.

2017 18th

2018 looks like we’re in a race to the Bottom with Carlton.

If Carlton receive a PP, they better well be handing one to Brisbane as well.

I think Carlton should get an end of first round one and Brisbane one after their first pick assuming they both finish with 4 or less wins.

Agree both teams have been dismal CFC :- 2015 / 18th , 2016 / 13th, 2017 16th , 2018 probabley 18 or 17 .
They need assistance and AFL are fully aware of it. This draft and the next are strong abd deep, so goid timing for AFL be constructive.

I'm struggling to image which a game we can win in 2018, the way things are going .
Our rebuilding is moving well but takes time and patience.
However injuries and lack of payers is our problem.

no they don't

they just need to get their shit in order

We've just finally got through a completely compromised draft era with the expansion teams

Draft is already compromised with academys as it is

No more leg ups for poorly run clubs

Carlton needs to fix itself up off the field first.

I mean, that's what Brisbane posters have been told on BF for the last five years by people who wouldn't know anything about the Lions off-field so it must be true for other teams as well.

Coming from an NBA background, I didn’t understand the philosophy behind Priority Picks.

But then again, there’s so much about the AFL that doesn’t make sense or is a rort.

For a national competition, it heavily favours and panders to the Vic clubs.

No way.

Build lists by not making stupid decisions, drafting & trading wisely. Getting extra draft picks makes SFA different in the short term.

The only concession I would begrudgingly give them is the ability to sign 2 State League players that are +22 years over and above normal AFL list numbers, with the minimum salary/match payments being considered separate to the salary cap for 1 year.

This would simultaneously make their match day list better (if the Match Committee wanted).

I'm talking guys like Haiden Schloithe (going at 23 disposals, 6 tackles and 2 goals/game) would improve a Brisbane or Carlton, yet as teams are in a rebuild they want to risk on the young side. Maybe a lifeline too for guys too good to be in the WAFL/SANFL/VFL/NEAFL

Well this way they can have their cake and eat it too.

However as it is a logical solution - it is no chance, instead poor planning/luck/execution may well be rewarded with another 18 year old kid, whose development is likely to be impacted by playing too soon with too few experienced bodies around them.

An area the AFL should look to fix is free agency. Teams on the bottom of the ladder are hampered by Free agency. Teams in the middle and at the top can continually top up with free agents, and free agents when they do move, are usually leaving successful teams in any event (and those teams are then awarded an often very high draft pick in return).

Free Agents rarely (indeed never) move to bottom sides. All the bigger name free agents (Betts, Franklin, Rockliff, Frawley, Waite, Danger) all left for teams that were challenging, and at the top end of the ladder. You'll see the same thing with Lynch, Sloane and Gaff this year; if any of them move, it'll be to sides that are challenging or predicted to challenge soon. If Sloane or Gaff do go they'll likely attract compensation in the band 1-2 range for Adelaide and West Coast (two sides doing well this year). In Lynch's case, it deprives the Suns of a mature body, and adds (yet another) low first round pick to continue the cycle for them.

As you rightly point out, adding senior (gifted) players is exactly what Carlton, Brisbane and the Suns need to take that next step. They need experienced guns to form a core to play the kids around.

Id like to see some kind of built in incentive for Free agents to move to bottom sides. Bottom 4 sides might get an extra (half a million? million?) each year following on from finishing in the bottom 4. That money would be outside the cap, but can only be used for free agency (to front-load a free agency contract). Something like that (just spitballing here).

The only concession I would begrudgingly give them is the ability to sign 2 State League players that are +22 years over and above normal AFL list numbers, with the minimum salary/match payments being considered separate to the salary cap for 1 year.

Getting mature bodies in that way might also help, but for mine getting established talent via free agency would be a better way to go. Mature bodies can already be picked up easily via the Rookie, National and Pre season drafts. There are plenty of senior blokes doing well that haven't been picked up (Schloithe and a few others from the WAFL spring to mind).

There just needs to be some kind of incentivisation to channel more free agents to the bottom teams.

However as it is a logical solution - it is no chance, instead poor planning/luck/execution may well be rewarded with another 18 year old kid, whose development is likely to be impacted by playing too soon with too few experienced bodies around them.
Exactly. It forms a vicious cycle.

Wait... St Kilda have no 2nd or 3rd round picks this year?? Who/what did they get for them?

Interesting given the amount of gloating coming from Moorabbin regarding the Hawks/JOM situation 12 months ago...

They really are not in a great position.
