When is the last time we brought in 8 teenagers to the club.. injected the club with a bunch of youth
Given 2 were Cat B's and they are usually used on 20 year old types from Basketball or Gaelic Footy and this is the 2nd year of NGA's and 1st year we have taken 2 NGA picks, lets see when the last time we brought in 6 teenagers in one draft would be a fairer comparison.

Go back to the last 2 super drafts and off the top of my head I know we brough in a stack in those those years.

https://www.draftguru.com.au/clubs/port-adelaide

2006 Boak, Paul Stewart, Krakouer, Gray, Ryan Williams, and rookies Lee, Grose, Batsanis, Hardy - in main draft Hoff was 20, Rodan 22 and Cockshell 20 who we picked up in the PSD

2008 Hartlett, Trengove, Broadbent, Banner, Redden, Cougar Dawson and in rookie draft Daniel Stewart, Martin, Lawrie - also took Jason Davenport 23, Josh Carr in the PSD and first 2 rookie picks were 20 year old Wade Thompson and 22 year old Danny Meyer.

2010 was a shit draft, thanks Gold Coast and GWS concessions and we brought in lots of kids that didnt make it and I forgot about them as they just didnt last. Jacobs, Newton, Young, O'shea, and rookies Jonas, Hay, Irons and Curnow.

We took 6 teenagers in 2012 - Wines, Clurey, Shaw in main draft, Colquhuon in PSD and did the 2 for 1 pick 29 trade for Hombsch and Neade.

Took 6 in 2013 - Impey, Harvey, DBJ, Amon, in main draft, Russell as a rookie and Flynn from Ireland was 19.

State by state breakdown of 78 draftees

Vic 45
SA 15 (3 top 5)
WA 7
NSW 4
QLD 3
TAS 3 (2 top 10)

Edit only equals 77 not 78. Cant be arsed recounting.
Pretty Sure this is the first time SA has had 3 top 5 picks.

In 1999 it was 3 Fioria (Maggies) 4 Pavlich then next pick was 23 Geelong picked Daniel Foster from the Maggies. In 1998 Sydney took both Nic Fosdike at 3 and then Ryan Fitzgerald at 4 and next pick was 18 when Freo took Daniel Schell from Centrals.

In 1995 Clive Waterhouse went 1 - Primus was playing for Norwood and was 20 went 2 but was a Vic kid so I dont really count him, Scott Bamford of North Adelaide went pick 4 to Fitzroy and Sydney took Jarrad Crouch of Norwood at 8.

If 1996 was like GC and GWS had 9 first round picks and not a zone Port boys Tredders, Wilbur, Peter Burgoyne, Tom Carr, Paul Evans (kicked 9 in the final of the 1995 Teal cup GF to beat Vic metro), then other sanfl clubs' Lade, Dew, Francou and James would have been pushing top 5, top 10, top 15 and first round picks. At least 5 of these were paid to stay out of 1995 draft. That's what we got fined for 5 breaches x $10,000 each, for paying them to stay of 1995 draft, but 8 names regularly get mentioned so maybe we got away with 3.

I think I have read about 250 pages of draft stuff in the last 2 days. There are some backflips that Matthew Mitcham would be proud of.
Was always going to happen. Hopefully the backflips will continue to a concerted eating of words at the end of the 2019 season.

Stack is the main one. Serious talent but the kid must have some massive off field issues to not get drafted at all. Its a real shame as he's likely lost to the system now.

Munn the other obvious one. I didn't rate him as I considered him a fairly 'dumb' footballer with minimal actual forward craft but I figured someone would give him a chance as he's a great kick. Just not athletic enough and not prepared to work hard to get the ball.

Blanck is unlucky but he's the type that might go back as a 19yo and get drafted like Jordan Butts. Hanrahan another I thought would go. All the others were touch and go.
Completely blew his draft interviews. I don't know the specifics, but went from a possible late/rookie pick to nothing.

I wanted smith at 5. It seems like he made that impossible. I wanted rcd, but i'm a fan of all our picks. Not excited by the rookie draft but whatever, we got 2 cat b picks. Good luck to all the kids.

Pretty boy I wanna stay hpme **** we probably dodged a bullet

Mead, Schofield and Wanganeen coming up in consecutive years I"m pretty sure.
Even though I'm expecting Wanganeen to nominate us as his destination club so we can take him f/s and not Essendon, I wouldn't put it past them to bid early on him so that we have to pay more than we would expect.

In next year's draft we will have the following picks: Round 1, Round 2, (no round 3), 4 round 4 (Bulldogs, Kangaroos, Crows & Power). Two possible F/S (Burgoyne/Mead). Unknown number of NGA.
Sounds a bit like Kangas this draft. They had 2 FS & 1 Academy from 4 picks, just came & did what they had to do then left.
Boring but effective.
Our 2019 draft is going to be a yawnfest as far as knowing who we're going to get.

Depends on how good Mead becomes over the next 12 months. His numbers at SANFL U18 level look very good for a 17yo but others here who know their junior footy better than me don’t see him as a first round prospect yet. With that being the case, we may only need a couple of fourth round picks to pick him up, eg if he is bidded on in the second or third round.

Meanwhile there seems to be considerable doubt that Burgoyne will even be draft worthy this time next year.

Schofield is the one who seems to be rated most highly of the three, but he comes up for drafting in 2020.

I've read a few good things about Taj and if he still has those wraps on him next year he may be in a lot of team's sights. Whatever, we should be preparing to bid on him early. We could need early third round picks to bid successfully on him.

Looking ahead is pretty hard this far out in the draft.
Mead seems to be rated by a lot of people in the 15-30 range next year. I’ve seen him play 3 games and he is the best dual sided kick I’ve seen. Genuinely can’t tell which is his preferred. Dislike that he is a secondary ballwinner though. Waits outside stoppages for someone to give him the ball, which is 100% what jimmy Toumpas did as a kid and it doesn’t work when you get to the afl so hoping mead has or develops either inside game or outside running.

Schofield is 2020 Yeah. most reckon he is in the best 2/3 kids his age. So much to happen between now and then though. Luckily because he has moved to Adelaide I should be able to see taj play a cpl of games next year

Interesting to compare our first three picks with GWS.

They went for 3 inside-outside mids, the first two of whom are high possession players. We went for 3 outside-inside mids, the first two of whom are more impact for touches players. Their three are much more developed physically than our three.

If/when our trio fill out and beef up, it will be really interesting to see how damaging the respective players are.

I reckon of all the clubs, GWS messed with our drafting strategy the most. We probably would have gone with Caldwell if GWS didn't pick him.
