Was there a clear winner tonight?

Carlton land Walsh burn pick 1 next year.

GC land Luko then pick BKing.

Crows go do something so utterly stupid and then totally redeem themselves with a trade.

Maybe WBD? No west bid landed Smith.

Swans did good, saints and cats get good value.

Give them a chance you mean? That would be a new one for this board.
I think most are happy enough with the first two picks it’s iust the last one that got the fire burning.
People have to remember these are just kids who at this age have reached a level that most of us could only dream about (getting on a AFL list).
Please at least wait till you see them on the training track before you make a opinion of them.
We might not all agree with who the club picked but we should all agree to give them what this country stands for and that’s a Fair Go.

Overall our picks were not bad. We were never going to get Rankine or Lukosius and Connor Rozee was consistently touted as top 10. The other two were top 15-20. Callum Twomey had Butters at 16 and Duursma at 18 so they were not from left field.

It is obvious that we have attempted to bolster our midfield stocks and these lads all appear to be running ball carrier types.

As with all drafts only time will tell us how well, or how poorly, we have done.

Welcome to Alberton to these three lads, hope it all works out for them.

Well an ok draft. Not great, just ok.

Happy with Rozee - about where he should be, just off of the Fab 4.
Butters - yeah, dunno. Ok I guess, but in reality a late teens pick.
Duursma - sheesh. Late second rounder.
Epitomises our year though - wec are a club that just continues to miss the mark.

One pick off of the top guns.
One pick off Cardwell.
One pick off Sturt.
One off every ****ing time!!!

Would loved an Ely Smith - clean hands, burst of speed out of the stoppage, brilliant handballer, runs and takes it on through the corridor.

Ah well

GWS have done very well, although Hately and O'Halloran are more of the same as what theyve already got.

GCS obviously nailed it with their 3 picks in terms of their needs. Just gotta hope they all stay.

I can see why the Crows have gone with the two they went with, but seemed a bit early on both.

Sydney massive winners getting Blakey for 2 late second rounders almost 3rd rounders.

Gws getting Caldwell and hately with those picks

Dogs are going to end up with smith west and Khamis. Excellent haul with those picks.

My opinion.

GC did great, they got a key fwd, back and an x-factor player. However until it is proven that they can hold onto those kids, it is hard to say they are the clear winners.

GWS did sensationally. Caldwell and Hately is a fantastic result. Hately will play a lot of solid AFL and Caldwell has that elite potential.

Sydney and their little swifty trade before getting Blakely for cheap was a huge win.

Carlton the big losers, absolutely massive losers. One of the worst trades in known memory to gift the Crows an amazing pick for next years draft.

Adelaide very average draft, sensational trade.

North paid more for Thomas than they would've wanted to.

Port get a pass. We got the types of players we wanted, but probably not the best options in all 3 spots. Time will tell.

There were too many good midfielders this time for teams to go past them for defenders in the first round. Not to say that defenders shouldn't be taken in the first round if they are good enough. All these players were taken first round.
Frawley(2006), Taylor(2007) , Rance(2007), Talia(2009), Docherty(2011), Whitfield(2012), Lever(2014)

Left out a few who weren't initially drafted as defenders and also those drafted by GWS and Gold Coast in their first years who probably would have gone later if they didn't have multiple first-round picks.
Jonas, Rutten, Glass, Bassett, Bock, Firrito, Gibson, Grundy, Maxwell, Mal Michael, etc.

Plenty of success stories off the rookie list as well.

Even others that aren't 100 gamers like Lienert, etc. The key point is our backline has enough players and depth to survive the next couple years, and most of our guys are young. So pick a young kp defender, let him develop in the SANFL, and hopefully he can fill any holes required in a couple years, and if we're lucky he becomes AFL worthy.

My thoughts:

Rozee - always wanted him from day 1. Isaac Smith type worst case nat fyfe best case (no pressure). Proven against men and big bodies massive plus for me. Will probably take wingards forward role for a while until he bulks up even push up to the wing

Butters - a surprise at that pick nonetheless. R Gray type future replacement as is his football smarts. Good kick didnt know he was a ballantyne niggle type. Another positive as we generally dont have one of those in our team

Duursma - Little bit dissapointed when he was read out but he is now a port player so will support him. I reckon when we met with hill last week alarm bells went off about something so duursma was left on our board. Looks bigger than he is given he is the same height as rozee. Think he can add the most kgs out of the group

As a whole: We went for a clear draft strategy as we always do; 2014 was talls 2013 was small quick types exception of harvey 2016 was inside mids exception of marshall 2012 one mid back and forward 2017 ans 2015 were just best of the rest because of how late we picked. All 3 lightly bodied with rozee the only proven performer against men. Clark was there. Duursma and Butters seem developmental players which is a tad dissapointing given we needed a polec and wingard replacement right now. Hoping Grundy and or Munn slip to the rookie draft

We've picked three blokes who can all play early next year. To go with Burton who'll obviously fit in straight away and it revitalises the youth in our squad. Add in Atley, Drew, Patmore and Garner who should push for games next year and its a good group. I'm happy with our draft so far.

Probably the funniest part of the draft build up were all the blockbuster trades dreamt up, especially the ones that would see GC part with pick 2 and or 3 usually to Adelaide and absolutely nothing happening in that space.

Adelaide might have traded into a top 4 pick but a year too late.

One team traded into the elite end of this draft.

There was absolutely nothing wrong with the draft coverage last year except for the shit interviews and the fact after the first round they just ****ed about with garbage no one cared about.

Just show the draft. No one cares about interviews till later. Plus the club's media departments can do the interviews and put them on social media instead of hogging the TV coverage.

I don’t understand why everyone thinks Carlton will be bottom next year.
They have a number of young guns coming through and we’re tanking hard last year.
They will be around 8-10th, and they know it.

I said the same about Collingwood being a Smokey for this year and everyone laughed at me!

Probably because they barely won a game last year.

A minor injury or suspension to Cripps and they could be totally uncompetitive.

Imagine if Adelaide had've done that trade prior to the draft (maybe for say 16 instead of 19) and then had Carlton's future 1st to throw at GC. They may've bitten if that was involved.

Carlton could be a big improver next year IMO. They haven't lost anyone of note and they've brought in Walsh, Setterfield, McGovern, Stocker, Fasolo and Newman who'll all play plenty of footy next year. Plus natural improvement from the likes of Cripps, Curnow, Weitering, SPS, Dow, Fisher, McKay etc etc. That's no guarantee to be a top 4 pick.

Counterpoint - it's Carlton.

Iv really warmed up to our draftees. We addressed a need for outside players which we all saw was a massive need.

Taking 3 of the highest rated outside players means we are very likely to have drafted the best outside player this year.
