List Mgmt. 2018 AFL draft

Make no mistake, these are Ken Hinkley picks. You can see Duursma replacing Sam Gray/Travis Boak in the secondary midfield/high forward role, Rozee replacing Wingard as mid-forward and Butters replacing Polec as the outside mid and the system being exactly the same as it was.

Contemplate that on the tree of woe.

Hinkley will be gone and we'll be playing a very different style before any of these guys get anywhere near their primes, so I can live with it on that basis.

All 3 of the guys we took are highly regarded in terms of speed/linebreaking ability and ball use, 2 of the issues that have torpedoed our current window. Having players with that sort of skillset should open up stoppages for us anyway because teams have to lock down a bigger area because of the spread and hurt factor if we do get it out.

Duursma and Butters both have stoppage work listed as a strength on most of their draft profiles. We don't need everyone in there to be Ollie's size.

I don't think any of the 3 picks were particularly sexy, but i'm looking forward to the 2022 side and seeing that we've just added a heap of midfield class, which was probably our biggest need going into the draft.

That was tedious viewing. The clubs were obviously told to use the full 5 minutes every time. One official was caught playing solitaire while they waited for the allotted time to finish.

Clubs should have 2 minutes to lodge a bid for Academy players and then 3 minutes to make their legitimate choice. Nearly 15 minutes of faffing around for those picks.

And Carlton and Adelaide should never be allowed in a room together because no good ever comes of it.

Yeah but how are you going to turn a relatively straightforward schoolyard pick of 22 players into a 4 hour television event if you run it like that?

I don’t understand why everyone thinks Carlton will be bottom next year.
They have a number of young guns coming through and we’re tanking hard last year.
They will be around 8-10th, and they know it.

I said the same about Collingwood being a Smokey for this year and everyone laughed at me!

It's like the fruit wheel at the casino where every second slot is a cherry. Carlton are the cherries. Picking them to finish last is the logical thing to do at all times.

Did anyone hear Parker earlier today say we'll look to trade up tomorrow ??

Sparrow please. ******* get him !!
I saw some footage with him saying we'll look to do it if we see something we like. Not sure what our currency to do it is though - I thought we can't trade our 2019 first rounder. Or maybe we can if we get back another 2019 pick as part of the swap. Or maybe we'll do a swap mid draft involving one of our 3rd rounders from next year.

Iv really warmed up to our draftees. We addressed a need for outside players which we all saw was a massive need.

Taking 3 of the highest rated outside players means we are very likely to have drafted the best outside player this year.

This is how I feel too, except that each of our draftees has a toughness about them and is more inside-outside than outside. This trio complements the trio of SPP, Atley and Drew really nicely. Now we need all six of them to reach their potential under Schofield's mentorship.

To be honest I'm happy we took Butters instead of Clark. While Clark clearly has enormous upside given his limited exposure to serious footy prior to this year, Butters looks like a natural, clever footballer, and our players have lacked footy smarts for a long time.

Duursma has his admirers. His kicking doesn't look great to me, but he clearly has pace and can also win his own ball.

We've gone for three exciting, smooth moving players.

Personally, I think Rozee will end up the most exciting non-tall player in this draft (i.e. outside of Lukosius and M King).

you may hope that but you know that is not the case and it does not exclude people from having an opinion.

Happy with Rozee and Butters, pissed at missing Sturt.

Duursma is one I have not looked at, I just watched his highlight package and my reaction was to cringe. Looks like a player who is good when the ball is in his area but has no idea what to do when the ball is not in his area. Having said that the tools are there for him to be good.

Rates elite in almost every category.

All three look to take the game on immediately upon getting the ball - good evasion and good vision.

Parker and Co. have developed a multi-year plan that seems to be working well.

My only concern is their size and strength, none are solid types. I was hoping all would play many games next year. Maybe they will.

A very good outcome.

Don't we need the points for next year?

I guess if we see an obvious deal that needs to be done i'm okay with it.
I guess it depends where the club expect Mead to be ranked in next year’s draft.

If we think a bid is likely between our first and second round picks then it might make sense to swap that second rounder into a pick this year plus a future 3rd or 4th. Especially if it give us an extra years development into a tall like Williams or Koschitzke.

it might not be as bad as first thought ….

atm the cows might have a top 4 pick and may have a chance at Noah Anderson who is expected to go top 3

but the cows have a top player from their academy in the 2019 draft - Daniel Sladojevic (but they will have to match other teams putting in bids for him)

Rozee was a certainty given who went before our first pick, he should play some AFL in 2019 but to become a regular first 22 player I suspect he will need to put on at least 5 kg of muscle, and I doubt that will happen in one preseason.

I'm a tad underwhelmed about Butters and Duursma, they both look a bit vanilla to me and they don't have much size about them either, I will be very surprised if either of them makes the Power line up in their first season on the list.

What the Crows have is 2 first round picks to offer Gold Coast when Rankine asks for a trade at the end of the season.

How? They swapped their first for next year. Unless you mean that and a future first,

There was absolutely nothing wrong with the draft coverage last year except for the shit interviews and the fact after the first round they just ****** about with garbage no one cared about.
Just show the draft. No one cares about interviews till later. Plus the club's media departments can do the interviews and put them on social media instead of hogging the TV coverage.

The herald sun said the AFL wanted to play it like Kevin Costner's film "Draft Day".
