Some info coming out of the draft.

Band of brothers – Will Kelly (Jake), Tom Berry (Jarrod), Jarrod Cameron (Charlie) and Riley Grundy (Brodie) joined their big brothers on AFL lists. Although only one pair(Tom and Jarrod Berry) are on the same list. Unlike our team which had 3. Cornes, Burgoyne and Murray. And may have had 4 if Collingwood had not taken Shane Wakelin.
The most for one team is 4 with the Danihers - Terry, Anthony, Chris and Neale who all played for Essendon.

New Jack City – There are now 7 players called Jack on St Kilda's list. Jack Bytel joins fellow Jacks Billings, Lonie, Sinclair, Steven, Newnes and Steele. Richmond is trailing behind but have now drafted three Jacks in three years with Graham, Higgins and 2018 addition Ross.

Great Southern Land – 15 of the draftees came from South Australia, six of whom were in the top 30.

Laitham Vandermeer is the first ever Laitham in the AFL. A pacy half-back flanker, he was drafted by the Western Bulldogs with pick 37.

I thought Tom Lewis looked like a gun mid! Maybe there is no room in the afl for big bummed mids?

I really liked Dillon O'Reilly and he went undrafted.

I would have thought Smallwood or Sampson were higher rated than Cox but good luck to him.

After the first round, this draft really became a lottery. We played it well.

I love that we added so many great kids.

Cox looks like a favourites pick. Must have caught the eye of Parker.

O’Reilly is unlucky. Maybe teams concerned by his athleticism and inconsistency but he can play. Lewis i rated in the 40s but a sub 180cm inside mid is always going to struggle to get drafted. I think hes a chance to go as a mature ager

One thing I was surprised about is that we didn't go for any WA players with a late or rookie pick. I thought we might, given Schofield's connections.

He might have thought the WA pool was full of duds.. in reality he's been here for 5 minutes and would have little influence with Parker n' co.

Before our trade period I thought we had no hope in hell of picking up a top SA lad in view of our ladder position.

It looked like our neighbours had much more chance to do that or to move up further with the draft hand they had.
I believe our neighbours thought that too, even up to draft day, which is why Reid said they could have done things better.

We, on the other hand, made some bold moves in the trade period by acting swiftly to improve or own hand. We were brave, some said reckless, and we did well rather than thinking that on draft night we could easily wrest picks off GCS or Carlton or Saints etc.

Very happy with those fresh faces at our club. Schofield and co should be licking their lips. Do your magic fellas.

Not sure about 2019 with such a massive player turnover in24 months but going forward there is hope. Glad a camp has been organised.

Yes Ken lets get some fast exciting footy going forward to complement our defence. Yes players show good application and attitude. Another star or two will be revealed but teamwork is just as important.

Or.. nothing will change
Agree the club was brave and I like brave. Hopefully we will have a more united, dedicated playing group in 2019 with better leadership on field. And hopefully the coaching additions will shake the crap out of the awful coaching and game plan.

Looked like we went to the draft to do one thing, to get the three best. When Riley Grundy and Boyd Woodcock were still available we were able to pounce late as well. I still don't completely understand how we ended up with picks 73 and 76. I understand that the academy bidding moved the number down from 85 but I thought we only started the draft with four selections so how did we end up with five? Not that I'm concerned. In fact getting Boyd Woodcock meant a great draft in my opinion as I fully expected him to go third round. possibly even late second.

Dockers legend Paul Hasleby was upselling Luke Valente on 6PR last night, saying "some had him in the top ten" and that "he's looking like the Lachie Neale replacement". Well, he is from SA I suppose.

I am holding a lot of hope that our new recruits will blossom under Our new coaches.
If there were no changes n the coaches box I would perhaps not be quite so optimistic.

His first name starts with L and he has an "N" in his surname. :D

I think Schofield's & Monty's hands are all over this draft. It's much harder to change the side for the better unless they get the right equipment.

This means more foot speed and much better ball use through the midfield, and much better ball movement out of defence into f50.

Add the likes of Rozee, Butters & Duursma to the addition of Burton & Mayes, more prominent roles for the likes of Hammer (injury permitting), Houston & Lienert, and playing Watts much higher, their equipment is now far better.

We always had 5, but traditionally weve always left one spot on our senior list open

I like that we didn’t

I don’t see many rookies getting games this year at all.

Lienert the only chance and having burton makes it less likely he gets called up I think.

Hewett no chance
Ladhams no chance
Cox no chance
Frederick no chance
Pudney .... I’m expecting he really builds some strong form during the year but will be held back as he needs to develop his body more.

We will always have 1 injury allowing us to access 1 rookie.

I’m feeling a lot better about our collection of mids 23 and under than I was pre-draft

We only had

atley drew spp and maybe patmore.

Now it’s

Atley , spp , Rozee , butters , Drew , Duursma, pudney and patmore.

That is much better.

We do need to continue to add to that in next years draft.

Presumably Mead and Schofield will add to that, with both looking like goal-kicking mids.

Next couple of drafts we have to also address the key position stocks.

Thought Suns aced it - as they bloody wellshould hsve with those picks

GWS too for the same reasons.

Cats did wellwith ordinary picks.

Rated us around 5th best.

Got a B plus for round 1. Always just that one pick off who I reckoned they were after ie. Caldell, Sturt. So not tooshabby but could have been an A with luck
Got an A for later rounds. Some astute picks late.
Rookie draft was a C minus though. Hewett - seriously? What does he bring? And Cox - hopefully not another Cam Hitchcock? Rather have Robbie Young tbh.
Cat B rookies - great result to nab those twofor nothing.
Overall a B minus, so pretty good but a fair way from great. Replaced a few "like for like's".but needed another development tall to complement everything else. Surely a rookie was around, or a Gaelic or Yank athletic behemoth?????

Now to see if the game plan changes

We must have had another pick after what was originally 85, which would have been something like 103, at a stage when all the other sides bar the Dogs had already finished with their draft. So 85 must have come down to 73, and 103 came down to 76. We (and the Dogs) just stayed in the draft after everyone else had gone.

I read on draft central that O'Reilly didn't test because of an injured shin. I also liked Chapman but he hurt his foot. I suppose when you are a fringe pickup it doesn't take much to be picked or not picked.

First pick next year needs to be a centre square midfielder

Centre mids you like this early?

Both Vic teams look really strong. Much stronger than this year which tells me depth could be much better.

Vic country looks very good.

Looks very mid strong at top end too.

At this stage heaps of those top mid prospects are 178-183cms so not the size that this years crop has. Still time to grow though.
