2018 - AFLX

I don't claim to know the little nuances of basketball, all I see is a team who get the ball, run it to the other side and take a shot, then the other team get a turn and the side who missed less wins.

Instantly surrendering 2/3s of the court after a turnover.
Yeah but at least Basketball has defensive zones and strategies making it harder to score a basket (I am no basketball fan). That's why it appeals to an audience because it is hard enough to score a basket let alone with someone closing down your shot and making you rush it.

AFLX is just a training drill; kick in, on kick to someone in scoring range for a shot on goal with no pressure. It is way too easy to score by-passing any defensive pressure. Replace the 4 goal/point posts with a soccer goal which has a cross bar maybe double the height of the jumping reach of a good footballer so that the players are less likely to wildly take pot shots from 50 and it becomes a game of advancement into the forward 50 to get closer to goal. All of a sudden the defence are brought into the game and we may actually see some tackles and close checking. Scores are goals only; no points given.

I'm not even sure that will work but the current format is embarrassing and it has to be made harder to score to be even watchable.

In its current format it should be renamed to AFLY(?)

For all the crap sprouted about being able to play AFLX on a soccer pitch people still have to remember you need 8 point posts to make it a game. At least with the above you can play it on a soccer pitch as the goals are already there albeit a little shorter than what you would ideally want.

Rewatched our AFLX games last night and by completely ignoring the commentary this time around it was more enjoyable and a few small learnings (hard format to judge on though). Thought all our youngsters weren't too bad at all in the first game. Giro obviously killed it. Crowden was good other than that passage where he tried to bust through AFL bodies twice. Still think he was robbed with that last goal - I don't see how it could have been touched but oh well. Logue, Duman, Langdon, Banfield, North and Cox all did some nice things. Would have liked to have seen more from Blakely but no big deal. Sutcliffe was the only real liability of that team which is sad given he was also the most experienced.

In the 2nd game I liked how we locked the ball in our half of the ground for most of the first half. If we can do that in a game like AFLX then surely we can improve a **** load from last season in regular AFL? Brayshaw had 5 score involvements that game. And that sums up exactly what I think he brings. He's not speccy but he is solid and reliable and that considerably improves our ball movement and therefore our ability to score. Feel bad for Grey because AFLX highlighted his deficiencies pretty clearly. I don't think Danyle was as bad as some are making out (he did a good intercept early on to make up for his mistake seconds earlier) but he and Grey were clearly the weak links (again the most experienced being one of the worst). I would have liked to have seen more from Matera but he was really good defensively. Something I noticed watching Willie Rioli was how poor he was defensively. A lot of the transition against West Coast started with Rioli's direct opponent. It will be interesting how that plays out in the regular AFL season. I think McCarthy and Matera will make big improvements to our forward line this season - both didn't star in AFLX but they ran well defensively and Cam looks heaps fitter compared to last season.

I don't understand why people hate this concept so much. Who cares. It's a pre season warm up thing !! For crying out loud.

People are sounding like there is a threat of it taking over the main game

Why can't people just enjoy having the footy back ?

I'm sitting here at AFLX Sydney and I am just waiting for the comments on here later. In typical Sydney fashion, all Tv cameras are facing the side of Allianz that is in the sun. Because it's general admission, every single person is on the shade side.

"No one has turned up" "no one cares about AFL in Sydney" "fold the Sydney teams". Don't understand why the broadcasters dont think of that. They do the same at spotless. There can be a decent crowd in for a Giants game but all on the shaded members side. So on TV looks like no one turned up

Haha read this after I posted. Figured that would be the case but it looks pretty amusing on tv.

Who's bright idea was it to give Heath Shaw a media gig?

Probably the same person who thought Campbell Brown could add something to the conversation......

Like others I watched our set of games with the sound off after listening for 2 minutes and (apart from the betting advertisements) I found it to be a lot better. I just hope this is not a sign of things to come for the main season because I appreciate actual proper commentary....

Despite extravagant remuneration, management of what may well be the world's best spectator sport remains amateurish.
Commentary seems to be getting worse by the season.
Dillon in the box the other night seemed like another dill.

Channel 7 coverage is actually painful. The megawall to watch someone sit in there chair and talk, instead of showing the actual game sums up how f***ing pathetic channel 7 are.
That and their Olympics coverage. It's just cringe worthy. Sponsors-led media stuff. Australian Open as well. Do they even show the sport these days, or just chemist warehouse crap?

Their olympics is a lot of men's figure skating, followed by highlights of the men's figure skating, followed by replays of the men's figure skating. It's like there's no females or other sports there. And I LOVE watching men's figure skating, but wouldn't mind a bit of variety.

This photo is the single one good thing to come out of aflx. That tongue! (And those guns  when did he go all beast mode like that???)

I don’t mind the idea but I thought they butchered a few things. Imo they’ve changed too much from traditional AFL footy. This was partly made to try and develop a game that could be played overseas. That’s great but part of that is trying to develop players from other countries to play our game and increase the talent pool. The talent pool imo is weakest when it comes to guys over 195cm so it seems pretty weird that we’re basically developing a game that almost makes these guys useless.

For me the AFL tried too many new things. They’ve tried to be like Big Bash here but what they’ve overlooked is the only thing cricket really changed was the length of the game (all other rule changes are linked). I would’ve started with just changing the number of players on the field and making small rule changes rather than the massive ones they’ve made. Obviously the AFL chose seven players as the number of players this time which is something I think needs reviewing.

A lot of the new rules made the game a bit uncontested for my liking. By going back to more traditional rules and adding more players we can make the game more of a contest between defence and attack as well as bringing ruckmen and hopefully contested marking back into the game.

The split screen was shit as the cameras were too far away to begin with.
The ground shots were so distant it was difficult to identify the players.
In the most basic terms, it was an amateurish coverage.

As for the game format, I think they could try the Gaelic game but use a football rather than a soccer ball.

Me personally? I would 100% rather watch an extra round of JLT than AFLX. It has no soul.

It replaces the actual preseason competition we used to have, which while not high stakes, was actual football.
You get that next week

In all fairness this replaces week one of the JLT where teams would play in super remote areas and they would reward those areas by sending their youngest newest players and try some experimental things before bringing in regular players and game plan by game 3 of JLT
