Analysis 2018 Best 22

What did Nelson show in 2017 to indicate he’ll be best 22 next year?

He started playing some good games off half back, showed some really good rebound pace. Then I recall he did a hamstring and struggled to regain his mojo.

We've moved him around a bit over the past two years. I would release Yeo to the midfield and settle Nelson on a back flank and let him settle into a specific role.

Like his speed and intent / mongrel.

HB: Jackson Nelson ~ Jeremy McGovern ~ Liam Duggan

C: Andrew Gaff ~ Elliot Yeo ~ Tim Kelly

HF: Daniel Venables ~ Jack Darling ~ Brendon Ah Chee

FF: Willie Rioli ~ Josh Kennedy ~ Jamie Cripps

R: Nic Naitanui ~ Luke Shuey ~ Dom Sheed

I: Scott Lycett/Nathan Vardy , Jack Redden, Tom Cole, Lewis Jetta

Jetta is the last player picked for a reason. Ship up or ship out. Have a look over your shoulder who wants a game.

EMG: Emac, Partington, Waterman, Vardy/Lycett.

Pushing for a game Karpany, Schofield, Rotham, draftees.

On borrowed time Masten
The back line looks great.

I am not so sure about this certainty that is going around about Rioli. For me - he has a hell of a lot to prove he can play at that level and then stay at that level. He came back from injury over weight and while I want to have an elite Rioli in my team, I think it is only a long shot.

Venables has not had a proper season for 3 years. He was injured in both his TAC Cup years and over half of last year.

I am really worried about having Rioli, Venables and Ah Chee holding down 3 starting forward roles. They have played a combined 27 games (all to The Sneezer). If we are that worried about locking the ball into the forward line, I would rather train Nelson up over the summer to be in the forward line and picking up the dangerous loose running opposition HBF. Alternatively we have Redden and Kelly playing midifeld/HFF. Both offer something different and both can hit the scoreboard.

Are you also prepared to back in Yeo into the centre? If we want to move him into the midfield, them I suggest he is an outside midfielder. He struggles in close and works best when given space.

Nelson was average last year but he is always in and out the side so i think we just got to pump games into him so he can develop.

With Yeo to the midfield we have the perfect opportunity to fully develop him there because over the years we have been playing him all over the shop but never an actual extended run in the guts... He has all the tools we lack in there and that is pace and a big body.

I think you are hoping and pushing for some pretty massive development to believe Rioli will be best 22.

Whilst I would love the idea of Yeo being a gun centreman, he has not shown he can handle it yet. Great if it happens but based on 2017, he has shown his ability when behind the ball. If anything, I would like to see him on the wing.

Not sure Cripps is a winger. He specialises in forward pressure. His time in the midfield has been underwhelming that I have seen.

Agree with a lot on your side but I would push Yeo to wing, Redden to centre and Cripps to fwd pocket thereby releasing LeCras to make his long awaited debut for East Perth.

The Yeo and Cripps moves are more about freeing up flanker positions for the new comers.

Think Cripps needs to be more than a pressure forward if he wants to keel his spot but would be happy with Yeo playing as a winger and Redden in the guts.

RE Le cras he may end up at EP but with three new forwards I can see we need some experience as well. Le cras needs to start leading by example and do all the 1%ers and pass on his experience to the likes of Rioli and Ryan.

Le cras will start 2018 in our best 22, Im not sure he will finish the season off in there though.

Struggled with Hutchings, but at least we have 3 options to run through the middle. Better get 2 first rounders for Gaff next year!

Can see Waterman and potentially Brayshaw forcing their way into the side as the year goes on. Still unsure what happens with Lycett/Vardy, Lycett is obviously the better ruckman but not sure if playing 2 main rucks in Naitanui and Lycett is the way to go moving forward, but keen to see how Lycett goes after missing 2017.

Awesome team. Looks a lot more dynamic than last year.

That forward line is sex.
Good luck to teams trying to contain it and trying to run the ball out of defence.

Would love to see Brayshaw or Allen push for Lecras's spot in the team.

I'm so excited to see the team play next year. Pumped to have two dangerous small forwards tear it up.

Could it be that our midfield could be better than we think this year? Even

Out: priddis and mitchel
In/possible in:
Definite for: shuey, gaff
Definite increased time compared to last year for: sheed, redden Jetta and ah Chee
With progression we may see duggan Nelson cole venables brayshaw parto..probably a couple I've forgotten

In his interview Liam Ryan even stated that he would love to build his tank and play on a wing

Our back line is rock solid. Our forward line actually might contain crumbers and we arnt slow anymore.

What I actually like is that there are actual specialists on every line not just guys who have to pay hff due to there being limited midfield spots. Unless we cop a bunch of midfield injuries I don't see why we'd finish low on the ladder

At least early in the season I'd like to see

FULL BACK:
Jackson Nelson ~ Tom Barrass ~ Brad Sheppard
HALF BACK: Shannon Hurn ~ Jeremy McGovern ~ Liam Duggan

CENTRE LINE:
Lewis Jetta ~ Dom Sheed ~ Andrew Gaff
RUCK/ FOLLOWERS: Nic Naitanui ~ Luke Shuey ~ Elliot Yeo

HALF FORWARD:
Jamie Cripps ~ Jack Darling ~ Mark LeCras
FULL FORWARD: Nathan Vardy ~ Josh Kennedy ~ Liam Ryan

INTERCHANGE:
Jack Redden ~ Luke Partington ~ Brandon Ah Chee ~ Daniel Venables

Phase out LeCras once Rioli has had a solid injury free run at East Perth.

I'm backing in Barrass at FB initially but if he continues getting out bodied by bigger opponents than he needs to go back to the WAFL and get his positioning and body (in the right areas) a lot better. Needs to be smarter about it.

Vardy over Lycett because he is deserving of first crack alongside Naitanui and I think is more of a forward threat offensive and defensively than SL is. About continuity in games early for SL.

Ryan obviously the most ready made of our draftees but if Allen can have a good run as an inside midfielder for EP than he comes into the mix.

Brander I'd give time to develop IN ONE ROLE at East Perth. Not as a swingman.

You can see all of those smaller forwards could / will contribute 1 to 3 goals each per week. But for us to do well they all need to pile on the defensive pressure.

22 Vardy's should do it, would be the best goddam team in the comp.

Damn right. Vardy is gonna own that 2nd ruck spot, excellent forward man.
