Are we getting ahead of ourselves to pencil Venables in as best 22?

Players seem to get better when sidelined.

Honestly be basically plays like a young Shuey. Including the injury woes.

In my list he is interchange and my emergencies are Ah Chee, Hutchings and Nelson. I honestly think he compares fine to that level taking into account age.

Yes and no- but he was really showing glimpses in that game before he got injured.

8 score involvements from 11 touches in 2 1/2 quarters of footy. Needs to get it more, for sure but in a role like he had him playing, id prefer quality over quality. Perhaps Ah Chee has taken his spot for now, but i think DV won’t be far away. I would prefer to see DV on a HF flank than Hutchings or Sheed.

Nice problem to have, I suppose. Settled top 17/18,

He's played 3-4 games. You sure he's best 22? Does he walk straight back in? Doesn't that fall into the category of s**t that remains to be seen once he's fit?

I am taking a slightly longer viewpoint. At exactly this moment is he best 22? Probably not but most young kids aren't when they start out. You have to play them eventually.

Rioli wasn't best 22 in the first few rounds either. Now?

I do think he needs to work back through the WAFL but I saw enough there to think if he gets an good injury free run he would be best 22.

I think he would need a game or two in the WAFL, on current exposed form he hasn’t earnt an automatic selection yet. Plus he seems to have lost a bit of fitness which means he will need to build that up again. Right now though I would say he’s in that 21-25 mark when he has been cleared to play again. So once he is fit & firing I do see him being best 22.

IMO we get more out of him on the HF role than Sheed or Hutchings. I think he’s quality, the sooner we get him to that 50-75 game mark the better.

It's going to be interesting to see who gets picked heading towards finals.

These blokes are locks:

FB: Sheppard Barrass Duggan
HB: Hurn McGovern x
C: Gaff Redden x
HF: x Darling x
FF: LeCras Kennedy Lycett

R: Naitanui Yeo Shuey

I: x x x x

This leaves 8 spots open.
  • 2 will be defenders. Think its Cole ahead of Jetta ahead of Nelson
  • 6 spots for mids and forwards. I think they will play Cripps, Ryan and Rioli.
  • That leaves 3 spots. I think Masten will keep his spot.
  • Leaving 2 spots. And a long list of worthy candidates in Sheed, Hutchings, Ah Chee, Venables and Waterman. I would personally pick Sheed, but the last spot is pretty much impossible to pick.
  • It's pretty unlikely that we will be completely injury free, but the 26 players I've talked about create a pretty decent squad for us this year. Add to that Schofield/Mackenzie as decent back-ups, and McInnes as someone who can step up for a week if needed.

Right now body size and fitnesswise? No! Potentially?? Yes! Venners brings aggression and genuine pace to the plate and he seriously loves a goal.Do we look at best 22 right now taking into account injuries etc? or do we look at our best 22 to win a premiership? There would probably be a 5-7 personel difference.

I have Cole as my 5th defender picked. So personally a lock.

I think they will play Rioli and Ryan. Who would be the 5th and 6th forwards picked.

Can’t say that waterman is a lock at all. I’d have him fighting for the 22nd spot in the team personally. He could easily get it. But then Venables and ah Chee miss. And so would one of Hutch/Sheed.

I’m of the opinion venables should earn a spot. Do I think fully fit he’s best 22, yes probably. I just think it’s a bad message to send that he should slot straight in. A 19 year old with not much exposed form against men. Go to the twos.

I’m probably a bit different with Ryan because he’s dominated wafl for 2 years

Ryan is a specialist FP who is probably good for two goals a game and can therefore slot back in pretty quickly. Venables is a mid/HF with great potential but it's unclear exactly where he fits in that rotation.

Waterman and AhChee are not in the same league.AhChee has a great grab and nice handball but he [ at this stage] has nowhere near Watermans work ethic.Waterman has a good footy brain, good grab and a thumping kick.Look at his goal square shepherd the other night. He just does the right thing!AhChee still walks round with his hands on his hips ;slovenly body language ala Sheed.

Rioli would be a walk up start in the best 22 at every club in the AFL!!

Trying to work out how we bring Ryan back? If fully fit and firing, who do we drop? Assuming that Brander comes in and slots into that CHF role.
