I knew someone was missing!!!! Yep Wilson for Weller and Weller to the interchange. Looks like Mundy might have to get fitted out for a Peel jumper. :(

HUGHES - HAMLING - WILSON
RYAN - JOHNSON - MUNDY

HILL FYFE HILL

BLAKLEY NEALE DARCY

WALTERS - TABERNER - BENNELL
MATERA - COX - MCCARTHY

LOGUE -WELLER - TUCKER - LANGDON

I feel like the side would be pretty close to this. I don't expect APearce + Apeness to be ready Round 1 (I hope I'm wrong). I don't see Ballantyne / Grey being automatic shoe-ins. Kersten and Spurr won't be in unless there's an injury / they have a ripping pre-season (Lol). Pick 5 will either be in Round 1 if there's an injury if not someone should be dropped for him by Round 2. Deluca right behind him. If Sandilands is playing then we will either not have Taberner or Cox - most likely Cox.

I'm expecting us to roll out Darcy and Sandi whether right or wrong (I am guessing the latter) until one of them gets injured or needs a rest.

I agree with the sentiment that APearce and Ape (especially) will need at least 5-10 games at Peel before getting a look in. Part of the reason why keeping Johnno around isn't a terrible idea.

I just hope we get through pre-season without catastrophic injury. Need Bennell, Fyfe, Pearce and Ape to get a good run at it.

HUGHES - HAMLING - SPURR (IF FIT AND READY TO GO)

RYAN - JOHNSON - WILSON

S HILL NEILL BLAKELY

WALTERS -COX- BENNELL

TABERNER (if fit) - MCCARTHY - BALLANTYNE (if fit)

followers DARCY FYFE B HILL

interchange ....MUNDY - WELLER - TUCKER - STEPHENSON

PEARCE MATERA LANGDON LOGUE SANDILANDS At the moment if all fit...
I think unfortuneately some will be still improving there fitness/stamina such as Sandi & Langdon. Ballantyne> Matera Like to see B Hill on the ball outside along with Tucker. Fyfe Mundy and Stephenson doing the Ruck Roving and inside work with Neale and Weller rotating too. Would not mind seeing Logue tried at FF but at the start not in the 22. Stephenson, if we get him and I think we will, is the only one in the draft who I think can play round 1. Mundy too not being relied upon to do so much work on the ball could be used at FF and CHF. thus Cox okay to go back to chf in needed if Johnno gets injured. I think A Pearce wont be ready till about round 8...will need to build his fitness levels.

For what it's worth, I think we have the players to win a premiership now (2018..) but need to have the same group playing together across most of the season and during the finals...so not too many injuries...then it will happen. 2019onwards looking promising if we draft well.

Surely Hughes for Johnson and Mundy for either Langdon or Nyhuis then. Same rationalle.

Still need some experience and leadership on the field and Mundy/Johnson can provide that, where as Ballas doesn't provide that. Mundy can help organise/teach the midfield and Johnson does the same in the backline.

Ideally Logue learns to become the new Johnson so we have Hamling/Pearce/Logue.
Langdon looks like the guy to replace Mundy (or maybe our pick #5)

I think Logue progressed well this year and that Hughes was terrific.

Mundy is the player we most need to cover for in this draft I think, and I am less optimistic than you are that Langdon steps in there. If Wilson comes he is a huge part of that releasing Weller and Blakely into the midfield/forward zone. But locking Hughes into that backline is another component of that as well. Nyhuis could be an alternative if Hughes is capable of playing a different role.

That team looks good. I would have Langdon instead of Johnson to add more pace to back line. Hopefully Pick 5 can make an immediate impact.

PS - I doubt Taberner will be in purple next year.

Happy to have either Langdon/Hughes/Nyhuis as the Mundy replacement (whoever steps up). I was just going by who played more games which has been Langdon.

The first 22 is probably bottom of the eight quality. Problem is if we get any injuries the replacements aren't.

Johnson, Ballas and Spurr will play imo, even if we don't think they should. They might not all last the season, but they will get a chance. Spurr may be in some trouble if Wilson does come because Ryan is playing.

Spurr/Hughes Hamling Ryan

Wilson Johnson Pearce/Logue

Hill Fyfe Hill

Bennell Taberner Walters

Matera McCarthy Sandi

Darcy Neale Blakely

Weller Mundy Ballas Tucker/Langdon

That is injuries permitting roughly what I think will turn out round 1.
I agree with your thinking re Johnson. Ballas & Spurr. I think the backline needs a running defender which where Weller should be. ie Spurr/hughes on the bench.

I think also he needs to let Stevie H settle in one position ie play on the wing opposite his bro. I think forwardline can't sustain Tabener and Sandi/Darcey . it will be a crying shame if Darcey's development is stifled by playing an injury prone 36yr old instead of him for team balance.

Also as season progresses hoping Spurr spends more time at Peel

Wilson is your running defender.

Agree it is not a good idea but two rucks is what I think is going to happen.

Doing some thinking and I don't think the current team sheet layout accurately reflects a team's talent distribution.

Hypothetically for the sake of argument,
A team of 22 with 18 players on field at all times for a total of 1800% game time played.
7 defenders, 6 on field at all times for a total of 600% game time played at an average of 85.7% game time each.
15 non defenders, 12 on field at all times for a total of 1200% game time played at an average of 80% game time each.
Approximately 6 forwards on field at all times for a total of approximately 600% game time played.
Approximately 6 midfielders on field at all times for a total of approximately 600% game time played.

Defenders: A Pearce, Hamling, Logue, Hughes, Ryan, Wilson, 7th

Fwds and mids (rough estimates)

The dream:
Ryan Hamling Hughes
Wilson A Pearce Weller
B Hill Fyfe S Hill
McCarthy Cox Bennell
Matera Hogan* Walters

Darcy Neale Blakely

Langdon Tucker Logue Mundy

* I said the dream =)

Sandi to play most home games instead of Darcy, Johnson to be play the first few rounds until Pearce is up to scratch

Emergencies: Throw a blanket over everyone else

Honestly, I look at that team and cant help but get excited, so young, and so much potential. McCarthy gets to the third tall that roams around and does what he does best, we have terrific ball use out of the backline between Wilson, Weller and Ryan (Hughes aint that bad either). Two legit targets up forward and options and run off the bench.

The biggest problem is a profound lack of depth where it drops off considerably after this 22, but, that will come with a couple more drafts hopefully. Give the above team another two years and we should be well and truly in flag contention, and in flag contention for at least 3 years.

Also, I fully acknowledge this will never happen and Spurr, Johnson, Kersten and co will find a way in there come round 1

I'm hoping big Ape can get fit and become that 100kg pack crasher we need him to be, if he does he replaces Tabs. Keep Cox up forward. With his hands and natural ability he offers a lot to work with.

Yeah he was the one I was missing, was definitely a rudimentary application of this method I was trying out.
I've modified it to include a defense percentage. I've averaged the team to be 80% game time instead of the more accurate 81.2 but they're still just ballpark figures and the % game time played does range from mid 60s to high 90s so grain of salt and all.

When I look at our players...my biggest concern is the lack of physical players. Players to lay tackles and provide that frantic pressure that we need. No, not Suban. Really hope we draft two or three inside/out mids capable of bringing some hurt. And guys like Langdon, Tucker, Weller add more to their game.

Are we too soft? Have we gone too many outside types? Hill, Hill, Bennell, Matera, Ballas, McCarthy - doesn’t strike me as a forward half capable of locking the ball in for repeat entries and to slow the opposition transition. Sure, mad skills, but often pressure will beat skills ala the GF.

out of the draft pool who would you have in mind?

Not really sure - haven’t followed it enough. But someone who can two-way run, win contested ball but also spread from stoppages, and is a solid tackler with elite kicking skills. This shouldn’t be asking too much should it haha. Otherwise just a solid kick will do. Rayner is probably the one, and UDL - but probably gone by our pick. Could Fogarty be a mid? And I kinda don’t mind the idea of Higgins. Could be a 40 goal small forward that goes through the midfield. Meant to be a great student of the game, so hopefully he eats, breathes, loves footy and wouldn’t be a flight risk. Just think we’ve probably drafted too many skinny flankers in the past and it’s coming back to bite us in the bum.

I'm happy with whomever is deemed best available.
Ideally I think we'd get someone with forward and midfield talent
Stephenson, Reynard, Fogarty maybe even Higgins but if one of the more pure mids; LDU Dow or cerra are available they're worth considering too.

Making some assumptions:

Wilson, Hamling, Ryan
Weller, A Pearce, Blakely
Hill, Mundy, Hill
Bennell, McCarthy, Matera
Menzel, Tabs Hoganplzplzplz, Walters
Sandi, Fyfe, Neale

I/C and depth: Darcy, MJ, Ballantyne, Hughes, Tucker, (Aliir?), Langdon, Logue, Cox, Kersten, Nyhuis, Collins, Sheridan, Sutty, Grey, Deluca, Duman, Apeness, Stephenson/Fogarty/Hayes, Strnadica, Uebergang, Sambono, Kelly, Shipley/Patmore, Garlett, Dixon/De Koning
