If we have a defense In 2019 of

Nyhuis. Pearce. Ryan

Wilson. Hamling. Logue (for example)

It does look pretty good but does it have enough speed in it?

Personally out of all these guys I believe Wilson is the only one with a bit of speed.

There is no doubt this defense can hold down some teams forwards but if we are against a forwardline with some pace. We are all but going to be blown apart
Nyhuis, Ryan and Alex Pearce are three of our quickest players this year in terms of maximum speed measured on GPS. Hamling and Logue are also very quick. That is a ridiculously quick backline.

We have a quick backline.

Where we are slow is forward of center.

I was just thinking thinking about how Brad Hill would look playing forward. Could be something to try for next season having genuine speed and running capacity in the forward line.

He is like 200cm tall and is one of the quickest at top speed ?and one of the quickest to get to it? I would have way more guys ahead of a 200cm tall defender.
I'm not just making stuff up. It's data from the GPSs which has been mentioned here numerous times, and also by Pav on the broadcast last week.

Edit: Fastest player on our list when he hits top speed, followed by Luke Ryan and Ed Langdon.

That is a fast backline, but we will also have Carter developing and SHill spends a fair amount of time back there too. What Wilson does best in your list of players is run and carry from the backline, but in terms of simple speed, they are good.

Ours is one of the quickest backlines you'll find. Wilson, Pearce, Hamling and Nyhuis are all very fast. Ryan is also a lot faster than he is given credit for. I don't know about Logue's speed (I don't think he's slow either) but we also have other options, almost all of whom are quick - Duman, Kersten, Carter, SHill, Hughes. Our forward line looks like treacle in comparison.

I love the potential with our backline. They've improved so much in just a year and I think they'll take another step next year and we'll start seeing more of their speed and skills on the attack.

What were your thoughts on Kersten last weekend?

Whatever our best 22 in 2018 is, it looked nothing like that yesterday.

Would be hoping round 1 2019 we line up something like this..

FB - Tucker/Nyhius Hamling Logue

CHB - Wilson Pearce Ryan

C - B Hill Neale S Hill

CHF - Cerra Taberner Langdon

FF - McCarthy Darcy Walters

Fol - Sandi Mundy Fyfe

Int - Banfield/1st rounder Blakely Cox Brayshaw

I hope you are right about this best 22. I also hope that over the pre-season we can get some other players pushing real hard for spots.

Who cares how quick they are when they move the ball slowly.

I'm not liking Pearce at the moment. He may be very quick and apply pressure defensively (which is perfectly fine as a lockdown defender) but ball in hand he is dreadful. He takes forever and rarely hits the quick option when they're open.

My best 22 for 2019. I'm doing it a bit different by placing guys as relatively absolute locks for rough positions.

FB - ?, Hamling, ?
HB - Ryan, Pearce, Wilson
C - Hill, Blakely, Langdon
HF - Walters, Taberner, Hill.S
FF - ?, Cox, Mundy

FOL - Darcy, Fyfe, Neale
IC - Brayshaw, Cerra

That's my 17 'locks'. Sure we could shuffle players around like putting Blakely in the backline or Hill.S off half back and push Ryan to FB etc.

Those are the 17 I think are automatic inclusions one way or the other. I don't think there would be a question mark on any of those all things being equal.

I'm not including Sandilands although he may go again.

We then have a host of players vying for the other 5 positions. They all have question marks for all sorts of reasons. In order of how quickly they pop into my head: Logue, Banfield, McCarthy, Bennell, Ballas, Kersten, Duman, Nyhuis, Apeness, Switkowski, Giro, Crowden, Sheriden, Hughes, Grey, Matera, Sutcliffe.

The highlighted 5 from the questionable pile makes up my best 22.

Obviously no new acquisitions or draftees included.

I forgot Tucker! I'd have him in the questionable pile but best 22. I'd remove Grey.

From all I've seen this year I hope something like this team runs out RD 1 2019:

FB - Kersten Hamling Duman

CHB - Wilson Pearce Ryan

C - B Hill Langdon S Hill

CHF - Cox Taberner Mundy

FF - Matera Sandi Walters

Fol - Darcy Fyfe Neale

Int - Blakely, Cerra, Brayshaw, 2018 1st round pick

I hope strength and conditioning get it right this off season and have everyone available for RD 1 - Be good for the likes of McCarthy, Logue and Bennell to get a good run for peel to make sure their bodies are right before getting ago in the AFL team...

INT: Mundy AB Cerra Banfield/Crowden/Duman/Switta/1st rounder/Harley/whoever is fit

Maybe a bit optimistic on Nyhuis, Logue and McCarthy but the rest pretty much pick themselves except for the last bench spot, which will be decided by whoever has the best PS. I'd personally go with the most dangerous goal kicker, hopefully it's Harley.

FB - Nyhuis Hamling Wilson
HB - Ryan Pearce Logue
C - B Hill Blakely Langdon

FF - Switkowski Taberner Bennell
IC - Neale Brayshaw Cerra Duman

That would be my personal B22, I feel like I'm missing someone but that leaves decent depth to cover injuries / push for spots.

Someone should chuck up a 2019 thread.

I think this will be the 22 also. you would have to say Sandi prob be rucking though if it’s truely the best 22 Darcy will be backing him up. Once we are out of finals contention Darcy be in for rest of the year or Sandi injured etc. I wouldnt mind seeing mundy rested every now and then and fit our first round pick in there to play 10 games or more. Might get someone good in trade ? Get another good mature age player to have the size to help support Cerra, brayshaw in the middle etc

Fyfe revealed he had written Fremantle’s best 22 in his scrapbook on Friday night and it included youngsters Adam Cerra, Andrew Brayshaw, Brennan Cox and Sam Switkowski.

He said ruckman Sean Darcy required a strong pre-season to improve his chances of competing for entire games.

Switkowski is the interesting one.

He has only played 2 wafl games, and then straight back into the seniors.

Must be rated highly internally.

Wouldn't surprise me if he's loved internally, I was captivated by him when he spoke last year which is why I was so curious to see him play / get updates from watchers regarding him. He's going to be a leader of the club no doubt and has shown some great signs in his two games.

xxxxxx - Hamling - Ryan
Wilson - APearce - S Hill
Langdon - Neale - B Hill
Walters - Cox - xxxxx
xxxxx - Taberner - Apeness

Sandi - Fyfe - Blakely

Mundy - Cerra - Brayshaw - xxxxx

- Apeness as the ruck/fwd so Tabs stays FF all game. Cox plays as 3rd tall behind Ape/Tabs.
- Blakely and S Hill to rotate between HBF and mid.
- Small fwd and medium HFF spot up for grabs.
- backline spot open (Nyhuis - Duman - Logue)
- Last spot on the bench for whoever trains the house down over summer.

Swap Apeness for Dixon, and you have my best 22. I think we need to be more mobile in our front half.

I would like to see the bench spot, plus the two free forwards spot filled by quick agile players that know where the goals are e.g. I Hill, Kent and Switkowski
