Round 1:
FB. Spurr . Johnson . Logue
HB. Wilson . Hamling . Ryan
C. B. Hill . Neale . S. Hill
HF. Bennell . McCarthy . Walters
FF. Matera . Taberner . Kersten
Fol. Sandilands . Fyfe . Blakely
I/C. Mundy . Tucker . Ballantyne . Hughes

By Round 23:
FB. Hughes . A. Pearce . Logue
HB. Wilson . Hamling . Ryan
C. B. Hill . Neale . S. Hill
HF. Bennell . McCarthy . Walters
FF. Matera . Taberner/Apeness . Cox
Fol. Darcy . Fyfe . Blakely
I/C. Mundy . Tucker . Langdon . Pick 2/5

Out: Spurr, Johnson, Ballantyne, Sandilands, Kersten.
In: Pick 2/5, A. Pearce, Langdon, Darcy, Cox, Apeness**.

Sandilands and Darcy will rotate I imagine, also with trials with Darcy as the number one ruck and Sandilands in the forward line, and vice versa. Alex Pearce will start at Peel and build, taking MJ's spot as the year progresses. Kersten's treading on thin ice, but he's young enough to get better and earn a spot. Hopefully Apeness can recover well and be fit enough to compete with Taberner for that full forward spot, too tall with both of them in the side.

Maybe by the end of the next year we would have fully transitioned our list to be fully under the age of 30 barring how Mundy progresses.

I dont disagree with you really. I just wanted talented players in there to fastrack our teams development. I dont see a bright future for plauers like grey, Sutcliffe, Sheridan and to a lesser extent hughes so i dont want to dilute the talent in the team with plodders just for the sake of it.

If i were to justify my selections i would argue logue provides some rebound and bounce so really only 2 true talls down back. Up forward kerstan and McCarthy are both smaller mobile type player's than true key talls. And i think there is plenty of buzz and Nip from bennel, walters and matera to be provided. Perhaps sandi would be my first ommision if a tall needed to go. But Cox and Darcy are a massive part of our future in my eyes so simply get games for fasttracking development.

Depending who we draft maybe id replace kersten and sandi with smaller running types.
Think you are underrating Hughes. Reckon he will be a quality player when he hits is straps.

FB - E.Hughes, J.Hamling, G.Logue
HB - N.Wilson, A.Pearce, L.Ryan
MID - B.Hill, C.Blakely, S.Hill
HF - H.Bennell, B.Cox, M.Walters
FF - E.Langdon, M.Tabener, C.McCarthy
FOL - S.Darcy, N.Fyfe, L.Neale
INT - D.Tucker, B.Matera, D.Mundy, P.2/P.5/S.Kersten

Tucker, Langdon and Cox could have breakout seasons imo
I don't see Matera being straight best 22 straight away, but he could be there eventually
If Pick 2 is Rayner/LDU/Dow/Stephenson/Cerra they should be best 22
If Pick 5 is Stephenson/Brayshaw/Cerra they should be best 22
Fogarty and Naughton could be best 22 if we pick them, but I'm not 100% sure (not saying they're bad, just interesting to see where they fit)
Sandi might not play much this year, as with Spurr. Let Hughes/another young defender and Darcy come into their own
As bad as BigFooty thinks Kersten is, he was our second highest goal kicker and Ross could give him the pick because of that
Johnson should be phased out over the season
Pick 42, our later picks, T.Duman, a DFA, R.Nyhuis and a rookie all could come into the equation for the last interchange spot/Mundy's spot

EDIT: Completely forgot Blakely, takes Mundy's spot and takes Grey out of the side
Given Ballas is spent and Sonny spends significant time in the midfield, Matera is comfortably the best small forward we have. His competition is Grey and 2017 draft picks. He will play if fit.

Logue was easily our worst defender for metres gained per game this year. I think in time he'll eventually provide some rebound but for now he's providing a fair bit less than Hamling, Hughes, MJ etc. I think people have him locked in because he was a pick #8 but he's got plenty he needs to work on (and thta's to be expected). He's going to be a great player in time but I'd actually have Cox ahead of him in defending, intercepting and rebounding personally (for the moment). These young guys deserve AFL games but I don't see the harm in them spending time at Peel if other young-ish players provide better output and team balance.

I'd rather us go with 5 or 6 talls and make them fight it out for spots. Too tall and we'll get smashed and there'll be very few lessons learned by anyone.
Logue did the best job of shutting down his man of any first year tall defender that I can remember. Was seriously dominant against players like Harry Taylor, Majak Daw and Darling when he was moved on to him in the derby. Insanely underrated on these boards. He is a true one on one beast at 19.

I have to admit I had my doubts about Logue at various times but you just have to look at his combine results to know he's gonna work harder than anyone to succeed. Im tipping his gonna be a beast in the next year or 2. His decision making & confidence to play to his strengths will improve with time. Im predicting a massive preseason.

Alex Pearce says hi but he did have a year of development before debuting unlike Logue. And that's kind of what I was getting at. We let Alex develop via Peel and it didn't stunt his development. I think Logue's ceiling is very high and I thought he got a lot out of those breaks at Peel this year and am expecting he'll need more next year. Thought we made a mistake selecting him for that last Richmond game before dropping him to Peel for the final round.

For me, the older borderline players should be back ups and depth. Without Spurr, Sutcliffe, Sheridan Johnson, and Ballantyne we still have plenty of experience on the park.

Play the kids 3/4 of the time. Manage their workloads for sure and pick and choose what games they can be managed eg 6 day breaks.

Round one should be our best 2019 line up minus any injuries.

Logue Hamling Ryan

Wilson Johnson Hughes

S Hill Fyfe B Hill

Bennell Mccarthy Walters

Matera Cox Mundy

Rucks
Sandilands, Blakely, Neale

Bench
Darcy, Tucker, Pick 2 and Pick 5

Eme:
Langdon, Kersten, Spurr

Only A Pearce to come in for Johnson when ready.

You left out Spurr and Tabs.

I’d leave Spurr out and replace Darcy with Tabs. I think we can bide time with Darcy and play only one true ruck. He should still get plenty of opportunities at AFL level, with Sandi being rested or perhaps out with injury.

I can't see Spurr not playing Round One. He and Nyhuis are the only two lock down small defenders we have.

When has Spurr acted as a lock down small defender? How successful has Fremantle been against the small forwards over the last few years? Answer: not very.
Ryan played the same as Spurr when he replaced him, as a small intercepting defender.

I agree Spurr has been fairly average lately and shouldn't be a lock in ou best 22, but if we hav Ryan playing on Wingard/Betts types, it takes away his offensive game because he'll be forced to defend more. Playing a lock down small defender frees Ryan up to intercept sndand create, likewise Wilson. If Ryan an Wilson are our only small defenders, watch the small forwards run riot on us.

Logue was outstanding in the games leading into the Richmond game, so Im not sure what you are talking about.

I agree, Jetta as a free agent would be a massive recruit.

Fair enough. I think he developed really well, you think he was outstanding. It's not like we are poles apart with our opinions of him :)

Correct and provided much better rebound.

If Ryan plays on Wingard, Ryan gets a heap of ball and sets up play for us with very little pressure on him. Yes, Wingard may get the odd cheap goal but Hinkley would be either going to town at Wingard to man up or he'll send a player to Ryan effectively giving us a free man elsewhere. Sometimes you can defend by attacking and making your opponent have to worry about you.

Would rather play Hughes on Wingard, to use his height and pace and let Ryan play with more freedom.

While a consummate disposer by foot, from what I’ve seen Ryan is also no mug as a defender - either in intercepting/spoiling or going one on one and scragging (on an opponent his size). Imo he’s a perfect replacement for Spurr, but of course without the turnovers.

What is Logue's most recent height reading?
193cm. Pretty much everywhere bar the officail afl site which had him at 193cm until half way through the year. AFL site is consistently wrong. It still has Hughes listed at 187cm when he would be at least 191cm.

I wouldnt be surprised if Sean Darcy is much better forward than most think. The benefit of having him in the 22 is that he should dominate the oppositions second ruckman. Perhaps a ratio of 60/40 with Sandy spending 60% in ruck and Darcy 40% would be the right balance between developing Sean and keeping Sandy in the team to win games. Then Sean would spend about 30% of game time forward and Sandy 20& with the rest of the time on the bench.
The end result would be we would have Sandy/Darcy in our forward line for 50% of the game and the rest of the time we could have a smaller forward set-up.

You think hughes grew 4cm between the ages of 20 and 23? I don't doubt that many of the measurements are wrong

His parents told me he had grown more than a few centremetres since being drafted when I was sitting next to them at WAFL game in Hughe's his first year. Ethan is definitely at least 191cm.

He doesn't look 191cm standing next to Mora.
