2018 - Best 22

All around the ground?

He's usually our deepest forward.

Spends a fair bit of time looking lost on half back too.

He's poor defensively, doesn't have the fitness or ball-winning ability to play in the midfield regularly, and doesn't have enough tricks or smarts to win his own ball or create for others up forward (when not playing with great teammates). His tackling and pace are overrated, and he's not a noted leader.

Just don't see what value he has for us, with where we're at as a side.

He looks lost at half back because we've never settled him down there. He only plays a quarter down back after a whole pre season training up forward. If we settled him into that role he'd be much better.

I wouldn't say his pace and tackling is overrated but I think forward pressure on it's own it's pretty useless and Varcoe is lost cause up forward.

Go small, 2 genuine talls and a ruck

Murray Moore Scharenberg
Maynard Howe Langdon
Murray Adams Hoskin-Elliott
Pendlebury Elliott De Goey
Sidebottom McClarty Wells

Grundy Treloar Phillips

Fasolo Thomas Greenwood Crocker

Round 3:

Back: Brayden Maynard ~ Lynden Dunn ~ Jack Crisp
Half back: Matthew Scharenberg ~ Jeremy Howe ~ Sam Murray
Center: James Aish ~ Scott Pendlebury ~ Steele Sidebottom
Half Forward: Will Hoskin Elliot ~ Ben Reid ~ Jaiden Stephenson
Full Forward: Ben Crocker ~ Mason Cox ~ Alex Fasolo
Ruck: Brodie Grundy ~ Adam Treloar ~ Taylor Adams
Interchange: Josh Thomas, Tom Phillips, Callum Brown, Travis Varcoe

Thoughts:
1. Aish is a midfielder, not a flanker, not a forward. He needs more midfield time, give him 50/50 inside/outside time and watch him flourish
2. Scharenberg and Murray together gives us options when rebounding, Scharenberg has the skills, Murray has the run, play both
3. Even if Reid and Cox score like 1 goal each a game, they're critical to the structure
4. Cox needs to stay in the goal square, only time he moves up the ground is when Grundy needs a rest
5. Treloar and Adams both needs to handball more to allow Sidebottom/Pendles/Aish to set up plays from the midfield

Tonight was amazing.

What's our best 22? Moore, Fasolo, Elliot, adams to come back.

Fasolo isn’t in it now, tonight confirmed that imo. Thomas, De Goey and WHE are all really good half forwards that keep him out I reckon.

He's an infinitely better footballer than Varcoe, who is not very good in any single position. Definitely best 22 in my opinion

I thought Varcoe was cooked but the run he gives is so valuable, and all his touches lead to good. At the moment he’s easily in the side.

Right now i'd say:

FB: Langdon ~ Dunn ~ Crisp
HB: Howe ~ Scharenberg ~ Murray

Mid: Treloar ~ Pendlebury ~ Phillips
Fol: Grundy ~ Sidebottom ~ Adams

HF: Stephenson ~ Moore ~ WHE
FF: Elliott ~ Reid ~ Varcoe

Int: Wells, De Goey, Aish, Brown

Maynard stiff and probably should be in over Brown for team balance as a defensive option. But Brown actually has composure and footy nous and it's something I liked about the teams performance against Adelaide.

Also reckon that decision between Thomas and Adams is closer than it might seem. They both let themselves down with their kicking.

Also couldn't fit in Fasolo. Where does that leave Fas?

So (when compared to the 22 that played Adelaide) it equates to -
IN: Moore, Wells, Elliott, Adams
OUT: Cox, Crocker, Maynard, Thomas.

Don't know about leaving out Thomas. Guess he take Wells' spot as Wells is broken down most of the time anyway.
However I reckon Crocker, Maynard, Phillips and Aish are all on par with each other at this stage and picking one over the other is neither here nor there. I think Brown is slightly behind them and I agree with you about Cox. He shouldn't get a game when Moore is available but provides depth.

Good effort. Thomas is most certainly best 22 now though, he’s our leading goal kicker this year. I’d drop Stephenson for him, we can’t expect that level of input from Stephenson every week; there will be poor games (however I’m happy to be proven wrong:))))

On reflection you're probably right about Thomas. To me that would mean that Brown misses out.

Don't understand how people can't have Fas in our best 22. We lack speed, marking I50 and goalkicking, 3 things he brings in abundance. Also has the X-factor to change a game

I don't really consider Fas fast and that's part of the problem for me. It's also problematic for any small or medium forward who won't defend.

B: Mathew Scharenberg ~ Lynden Dunn ~ Brayden Maynard

M: Will Hoskin-Elliott ~ Scott Pendlebury ~ James Aish

F: Alex Fasolo ~ Ben Reid ~ Jamie Elliott

I/C: Jaidyn Stephenson ~ Jack Crisp ~ Taylor Adams ~ Josh Thomas

Edit: Out: Varcoe, Phillips
In: Aish, Thomas

After 4 rounds... for mine, Maynard lacks a clear position now, has stalled a bit in his development, and would be the vulnerable one when/if ever Wells is fit and firing

I don't want to see Brown dropped as I think he is a natural midfielder and reckon he is only going to improve in the next 18 months.

And I don't see Greenwood playing unless due to injury.

I thought he's been playing as a lock down small defender?

I think he's sacreficednhis a game a bit for someone like Murray.

Very perceptive.
It might just be we have too many others ahead of him, his injuries have cruelled him.
Ecomes a depth player.

And on every report can never ever doubt his work ethic and training.
But the time has pretty much come for him.

Just seeing Thomas, Brown, that type, don’t see his return unless lots of injuries.

Best 22 is clearly an interesting discussion right now

From outside last weeks 22 v Adelaide, Moore Elliott Adams and Wells are clearly best 22.

Behind them is a seriously top quality second tier which includes Mayne Greenwood Wills Sier McLarty Fasolo, the wee man and a few first and second year players.

So for me its four outs and four ins from last weeks side. Outs for me are Phillips Brown Crocker and the last out is a flip of the coin between Maynard Aish Cox and Stephenson (only because hes still young and didnt do much in his first three games) . I have left Cox in my best 22 (against my better judgement....question marks remaiin) because i really believe we can structure up better with him in the side. So its between Aish and Maynard. And I picked Maynard as player number 23 in our best 22.

B - Crisp Dunn Sharenberg
HB - Murray Moore Howe
C - Treloar Pendlebury WHE
HF - Wells Reid Sidebottom
F - Elliott Cox Stephenson
R - Grundy Adams DeGoey
INT - Varcoe Aish Thomas Greenwood

EMG Maynard Phillips Brown Crocker

Looking like:

B - Sharenberg Dunn Adams
HB - Howe Moore Murray
C: Phillips Pendlebury Aish
HF: Sidebotton Reid Degoey
FF: Elliot Cox Stephenson
R: Grundy Treloar Thomas

Int: Wells, Varcoe, Crisp, WHE

E: Brown, Wills, Fasolo, Maynard

B: Jack Crisp ~ Lynden Dunn ~ Jeremy Howe
HB: Sam Murray ~ Darcy Moore ~ Matthew Scharenberg
C: Steele Sidebottom ~ Scott Pendlebury ~ Daniel Wells
HF: Jaidyn Stephenson ~ Ben Reid ~ Josh Thomas
F: Alex Fasolo ~ Mason Cox ~ Jamie Elliot
R: Brodie Grundy ~ Adam Treloar ~ Taylor Adams
Int: Will Hoskin Elliot, James Aish, Levi Greenwood, Brayden Maynard

Looking a bit stacked already.
