DeShon Elliott - S - Texas

After looking at offense for the first three rounds, Denver looks to bolster their defense in the fourth.

The L.A. Rams select John Kelly - RB - Tennessee

The Rams enjoyed a very fruitful year out of Todd Gurley last season. In 15 games, he rushed 279 times for 1,305 yards and 13 touchdowns, and tacked on 788 receiving yards from 64 receptions (plus another six touchdowns).

So why add another running back to the Rams? To be honest, if you look at the roster behind Gurley, you'll find a lot of cast-offs and undrafted free agents backing up Gurley. Given Gurley is such a significant part of the Rams' offence leading into the season, there's a benefit in managing his touches and sprinkling in another running back (or two) to help keep him fresh as the Rams charge towards a playoff berth at the end of the season.

When you're selecting a running back in the fourth round, the player you pick is likely to have some warts. Kelly is no different. He has an arrest on his record for a misdemeanour drug possession charge after a traffic stop for a burned-out headlight.

However, when you look at Kelly's tape, you see a running back who has the ability to play on all three downs. At 5'9", 205lb, he is too undersized to be a full-time starter, but that's not why the Rams have drafted him. It would be expected that production out of the running back role would be diminished if Gurley was not available for any period of time, but Kelly would be a reasonable substitute for Gurley.

Although he is slightly smaller than your prototypical running back, Kelly shows toughness and will fight for extra yardage at every opportunity. He does reasonably well enough at pass blocking and can also be a checkdown option for Goff if needed.

The world saw just how dangerous Corey Clement could be in the Super Bowl, and Kelly has a lot of similarities with Clement's style of play.

He'll need to work on his ball carrying vision as he can miss creases which means he leaves yardage out on the field, but that should come with experience.

The Cincinnati Bengals Select Dorance Armstrong - Edge - Kansas

You can never have too may edge rushers. Armstrong will add punch to the edge for the Bengals.

Dorance Armstrong is a long armed individual who knows how to use his length to help his pass rush. He is able to maintain separation from lineman and can churn out a variety of pass rushing moves from the jump.

Cowboys select Breeland Speaks - DL - Ole Miss

Speaks is a boom or bust prospect but in the middle rounds of the NFL draft, the Cowboys are happy to take a chance on Speaks.

Speaks put up dazzling numbers for the Rebels, especially in the second half of the season, and chose to forgo his senior year to declare for the NFL draft. However, Speaks only has a year of good production on his resume after having a mediocre sophomore year in 2016.

Speaks ended the season strongly, with six sacks in his last six games, all from the defensive end position. He started all 12 games for the Rebels last season, putting up 67 tackles (eight for loss, including seven sacks) to earn second-team All-SEC honours. Hailing from Jackson, Mississippi, Speaks came into the college system as a defensive tackle, redshirting 2014 before starting two of 13 games in 2015 (32 tackles, 5.5 for loss, one sack, two passes defensed).

The Cowboys are banking that his talent will continue to take Speaks' production on an upward curve. Physically, Speaks has the dimensions to play either as a defensive tackle or as a defensive end, and he is reasonably comfortable in both a 4-3 and a 3-4.

Speaks has some technique issues that will need to be cleaned up, as he is often guilty of allowing blockers to get under his pads when attacking gaps. Speaks will often burst in a north-south direction only, but his gap shooting on the interior is good for a man of his size and length. However, he will need to add strength in order to play the three-technique and he will need to harness his emotions (he was ejected twice from games in 2017).

Speaks will likely begin the season as a reserve behind Tyrone Crawford and DeMarcus Lawrence while he works on refining his technique and harnessing his aggression in more productive fashion.

Detriot Lions select Da'Shawn Hand - DT - Alabama

The Lions are double dipping at the DT position here because they can't turn down the value Hand represents.

As I said in the write-up for the Lions 1st round pick in Maurice Hurst, the Lions major problem last season was applying pressure on the QB and getting off the field, and Hand will potentially help with that too. He'll join former his former 'Bama teammate A'Shawn Robinson on the DL here

With pick 123, the Dolphins select OG Alex Cappa from Humboldt State....

Every year some no-name from a no-name small school grabs the attention of scouts around the NFL and even going on to shine in the NFL. The Dolphins think that guy is Alex Cappa, who is just a tough no-nonsense interior blocker who can also push to the outside in a pinch.

Pick 127 . New Orleans .

Kyle Lauletta . 6’ 3” 215 lb . QB. Richmond.

The kid has a pretty good all round game , he is a good decision making , he has poise and he has a very accurate arm. What he does need to work on is to improve his arm strength, having said that the mechanics are very sound, I think his football IQ is also where you would want it to be.

It's an interesting mix is this years QB cohort as some of the more higher rated QB are not IMO as good as advertised and yet there are a little cluster of QB's who are not garnering a lot of love, yet IMO, are not far off, talent wise the more highly fancied candidates.

Funny thing, as always ..... every year , the gunslingers always get graded higher and cut more slack in the assessment of their flaws where as the kids with, not as strong arms, get heavy penalties in their grade due to this.
To me its dumb arsed thinking as IMO accuracy and being able to read the play come miles ahead of the how strong an arm they have.

I see White ,Falk and Lauletta as all representing good value as a pick any time from the third round onwards. In fact i would not be at all surprised if Lauletta is taken by the Patriots with their last pick in the second round.

I digress....... sorry back on topic as to why this selection.

Picking up Lauletta gives the Saints an opportunity for him to sit behind Brees for a couple of years learn and hone his craft, he is raw but I see huge upside in raw ability and i think he represents excellent value in a need position for the Saints at this juncture in the draft.
