The way I read it, we only need West Coast to pass on West and we’re in the clear
We have 629 pts for pick 30

Pick 24 is 756 pts, less 174 pts discount = 582

We can then use pick 35 on West, pick 42 on another pick and our last pick on Khamis

Edit. The discount is 197 pts which means we are already in the clear. Pick 23 is 815 - 197 = 618.

Youd think thats how it would work but apparently not. Apparently you have to use your next pick for some stupid reason, even if its overs. Unless your Sydney I guess but it's different for them because their academy got Blakely into the AFL system, it definitely had nothing to do with his dad playing 360 games.

Had to use their first round pick on Thomas.

We used 3 x picks in the 40's for Thomas actually.

Our first went to Port for Polec.

We traded Pick 11 and 3 x picks in the 40's for for Pick 8 (Thomas) & Polec.

So who are we picking today before/after west: Ian Hill, Curtis Taylor, Jez Mclennan, Foley, English or a mercurial type from WA: pickett, Sydney stack, etc

Yeah I don't understand where this North got shafted idea comes from.
The fact Thomas went so early just means you got a supremely talented player for way under value.

I'm prepared to cut Sam Power some slack being his first draft but it is worrying that he has not been able to pull of any of his planned moves so far. I guess he is playing it safe.

I think he got bluffed out of trading down pick 7. We will never know if Adelaide would have traded 9 for 20 plus 15+ next year but I think it was unlikely.

He has probably 3 picks to manufacture something out of 30 and 35 and there are still players that would be great for our list on the board. Taylor Hill and Foley all would fill a need.

If he can't get a pick in this draft at the very least we need to trade for a decent second rounder in next years draft.

We don't know where bids for Khamis will come but I suspect we will have enough points. Even if we don't, some minor pick wrangling or bringing our extra 2019 third rounder forward should cover it.

Still time for Sammy to get a win.

People realise that Sydney had to give up a second round pick to move up 2 spots and keep their 2nd round pick this year and Carlton had to swap first rounders next year to get pick 19 yeah?
Chuckling at people complaining that we didn’t package up 30 and 35 for say pick 20 when it took a (massively risky!) swap of 1st rounders to get pick 19. It’s a seller’s market for those high second round picks.
People should also factor in that trading 30 and 35 for say 25 would mean that we have no points left over for Khamis and we’ll significantly downgrade our second or third round pick next year, depending on where he is bid on.
So it’s really 30, 35 and a possibly significant downgrade of next year’s 2nd or 3rd for say 25.
That’s a fair bit for a 10 pick upgrade in the second round. Particularly if we’re just taking Hayes.

Details, details... Just get it done.
Swap or give up some future picks in next year's 2nd or 3rd round and worry about trading back into those rounds next year.
Ian Hill and Bailey Williams are still available forgodsake!!

You have to give up something to get a trade done during the draft, Carlton and Sydney examples for instance.
I'm confident that Power has assessed our options for swapping picks and what we would have to give up in order to do so may well be just too much to pay.

Too many on here seem to be suggesting evenly balanced hypothetical trades to change the order of our draft picks without considering what we would have to give up to make it happen.

Yep. North knew an early bid for Thomas was coming, so they already cashed in pick 10. Smart.

I think I posted earlier in the year that North were playing funny buggers with Thomas. Again, smart. Well played to North.

Not so the dogs thus far.

Unless the player is a forward that we really rate, we don’t need to move up the order. I don’t get people’s obsession with it either, we shouldn’t compromise our position for the 2019 draft as we need to target that trade period as a massive target to bring in big guns.

Go with what we have, get West & Khamis and Cavarra is such a good fit for our list it’s ridiculous if he ends up somewhere like Richmond or Melbourne.

Who are the best forwards still available? Small, medium or tall, it doesn't matter, we need natural forwards
Ian Hill - skillful, great disposal, kicks goals, gun
Will be picked up by West Coast though in the first trade of the day.

Bailey Williams as a really mobile ruck forward would be awesome.
Could form a lethal combination with Timmy English

And why didn't we land another late pick in 2019 during trade period if we knew not having one was going to hamper us this way with our live trading?? Amateur so far from us.

Ive never understood former players taking these roles in list management. Its not about footy. Its about strategy and deal making. What experience does power have in these areas??

Yep, Im annoyed.

People are basing it on the fact he had a "quiet" champs and , where the Allies played him out of the goal square a lot. Also that he was out of sight all year in the TSL.

He still finished top 10 in the CD rankings for the champs. He smashed every statistical record at the Div 2 series earlier in the year and there were articles left right and center how North were going to have to cough up a top 3 pick for him, yet we were reamed using pick 8....

Collier-Dawkins averaged 12 touches at the champs and he's the steal of the draft apparently, go figure.

Anyway, congrats on Smith, could quite easily be the best mid from this draft, he's a beast.

Tall - Williams (fwd/ruck(
Medium - Taylor

Taylor is the one I would want. But we'd have to somehow trade up to get him.

Sydney only got away with pulling a swifty and trading that pick out then back in.

Trying to trade for a pick before the West bid might not necessarily be the best move.
At this stage a West bid writes off pick 30 but then we can still get 2 reasonably good players with pick 35 and 42 (assuming a bid for Buku doesn't come in before those picks)
If we get a pick in before West then our last pick will be one of the last in the draft.

I guess it all depends on how we rate the next couple of players available.

I think West Coast will take Hill and personally I'm not that sold on Taylor who are the two first round sliders available.

I'd prefer to take 35 and 42 and hopefully get Stack and Williams

His planned moves?
Pretty sure he's said repeatedly he's happy to take pick 7 to the draft. Unless I've missed something?

The Club were always dead keen on Smith and I think are happy with the outcome, especially with the word that other clubs were ready to trade up and pounce on him if we traded 7 down.

They didn't do that. It wasn't a straight reversal.

They ended up swapping their future 3rd for West Coasts future 2nd in order to move up from Pick 26 to Pick 24.

Wouldn't that last pick just be a rookie upgrade anyway? Or do we have 5 draft picks and 2 upgrades?
