We couldn't add experience when Franklin was in his prime thanks to the restrictions imposed upon us.

Yep

That time has passed and we have since let a few go mitchell , nankervis etc and now Hanners is off

Must be back in line with the cap, and if we don’t have space it’s on us

I don't think many of us would have thought he would be a future brownlow medalist when we traded him.
Was always a good chance, even in 2016 he had good pedigree
Did you know that Tom Mitchell across his career to date averages as many Brownlow votes per game as Adam Goodes?
Others had good insight as well
Hawthorn got an elite 23 year mid yet to hit his peak who peforms in big games

Easily a brownlow chance

For a guy who's not been able to play the best part of two years and looks like one good tackle would break him?
I wouldn’t be surprised if he falls all the way to the 2nd round. If it weren’t for the hype, his game and inability to stay on the park would’ve made him a 4th rounder. There’s a day and night difference between Blakey and the other top names in the draft this year

So you think we should pass on him then?

Looking forward to you being very wrong about this.

We really are not getting a big fish this year unfortunately by the reading of that trade.

Berg and Blakey it is I guess and that Clarke which he will be depth at best imo

SYDNEY has emerged as the circuit breaker in a deal to send Adelaide forward Mitch McGovern to Carlton, with the trade set to be finalised with the AFL on Wednesday.

AFL.com.au understands Carlton and Adelaide reached a breakthrough in talks over McGovern on Tuesday night, with the official paperwork set to be lodged imminently.

As part of the deal, the Blues will send picks No.26 and 28 to the Swans in exchange for pick 13.

That earlier draft selection will then be sent to the Crows in exchange for McGovern, along with the rights to mature-aged SANFL prospect Shane McAdam.

Future picks could also be traded between the three parties in order to ensure the deal gets over the line.

The acquisition of two second-round picks will also assist Sydney to match a bid for highly touted Academy prospect Nick Blakey who has nominated the Swans as his club of choice.

The combined value of picks No.26 and 28 in the AFL Draft Point Index equates to a traditional pick 10.

McGovern, 23, requested a trade to Ikon Park last month, despite extending his contract at Adelaide through to the end of 2020 in August last year.

He played a total of 48 games for the Crows, kicking 67 goals

Are you guys wanting points to bid on an Academy player or something?

Not sure why you would do that deal and effectively trade out of first round.

Pardon my ignorance here, I am unaware of your drafting or academy player recruitng agenda.
It's called equalisation. The more f. . K d up our trading becomes, the closer Carlton can get to us, season after season.

With a bid for Blakey expected in the to 10 we had three options with it first round pick.

1. Trade it at for a player, using later picks y to match the bid.
2. Try to use that pick to work out a trade up the draft to try to get a pick in before Blakey.
3. Trade it away for multiple lower picks that gave us more points.

The downside of option 1 is that it would lead to our draft position being severely undermined. We would use all our second and maybe third round picks to match Blakey, meaning any other picks would come very late in the draft. Option 2 is risky because we could still end up having a high bid and having to "waste" the improved pick on Blakey. Option 3 allows us to bid on Blakey and keep a few draft picks within the second round.

We still don't know what we are going to be getting for Hannebery. Maybe it looks like a player will come to us through that trade, hence using the round one pick to improve draft position rather than seek another established player? Best wait and see what happens before riding to judge.

We do nothing, people complain. We do something, people complain. I think there is little that will ever make some people on here happy.

I’m thinking Clarke will be alright. Our success at targeting fringe players is generally pretty good, it’s just a pity that we haven’t really had the opportunity to do so since Franklin’s recruitment until now.
