I agree that Blakey was no way in the class of the top guys but doesn’t mean he isn’t a good get

Boarder line top 10 IMO
Well those who actually know the "top guys" and basically follow them for a living say Blakey is well and truly in that class. Twomey is about as exciting as a Norah Jones song but he knows his shit with these kids, travels to the US with them, gets intel from all the clubs about who they rate, who they don't rate etc. and has maintained Blakey is one of the 'super seven' from this year's draft (that term makes me cringe.)

I know you're disappointed that we're probably not getting a big fish but make no mistake about it we're very fortunate to able to have access to a kid in the very upper class of this year's draft which is highly rated. I only wish that if we weren't going to get a big fish, that we at least tried to improve our position in the draft beyond just Blakey. As it stands right now we're not looking likely to improve the best 22, and we're putting all our draft eggs in one 18 year old's basket. Bit iffy to me.

He has 3 kids under 5 Jewelsbon. A little different to your average "I want to go home to mummy" footballer.
Still sucks that he nominates a club, but why not? Players get shafted by clubs all the time.
As far as I’m aware it’s twins under 2 and the third (elder) one has some medical issues. I think he probably has legitimate go home factor.

3 kids, whoop de do. They live with him in Geelong, the club he signed an AFL contract to play with for 2 years (a contract arrangement that is signed off by the AFLPA). The go home factor is not about the kids, it’s about the offer WCE have put to Kelly. Geelong are doing the right thing...**** him, he can wait a year!
Please read above. He’s fine with Geelong, it’s more his immediate family that is really struggling.

I’m 50/50 on this one. What I do hope is that Geelong get what they want and deserve.

WC probably took 25 draft picks between him being eligible and actually getting drafted, he was right under their nose that whole time too. I’m expecting this to be Brander and pick 22 for Kelly

Pick 13 seems the most coveted in the draft
It’s the lowest hanging fruit and it’s also worth more than that offer.

We are such a piss weak trading team. Mitchell plus pick upgrades for 14. Biggs for a one spot upgrade in the 3rd round. Mumford for a pick in the 40s. We are such a soft touch

I wouldn’t be surprised if he falls all the way to the 2nd round. If it weren’t for the hype, his game and inability to stay on the park would’ve made him a 4th rounder. There’s a day and night difference between Blakey and the other top names in the draft this year
I agree, I think he’s a 9-12 player. He’s also a project player, you won’t see much of him next year

Murray for a second rounder...

It is swings and roundabouts, sometimes you over pay, sometimes you under pay, sometimes a fair deal is made. I reckon fans of most clubs think they don't get enough value for their players or are forced to pay too much for others.

I just read on the Collingwood board that free agency compensation picks can’t be used for father son/academy points.

Would explain the WC deal being a non event
Holy Zeus. Trawling through the Eddiehead Board is a tough way to start the day.

I haven’t checked the rule yet, but I’m pretty sure that limitation disappears if you trade the pick.

Just read through the rules, there is nothing stated about the limitation disappearing if the pick is traded. Guess it would make some sense as to why we traded with Carlton.

Would anyone be able to give some feedback/ logic as to why this rule would be in place?

The only reason I can think of is so clubs avoid purposely letting fringe players walk for compensation to use on the bidding process, but I thought this would be a benefit to the AFL?

If Geelong traded for that pick they'd be fine but with us following the rules it'd probably be a draft ban

you are kidding, right?
Compensation picks are a joke. The reason clubs don’t match offers is largely because of the availability of compensation picks...it’s not far off draft tampering. The AFL need to grow up and accept player movement, put it back on the clubs to create environments where players see the cost of leaving as too high. These bottom placed clubs who then penalise innocent clubs in the draft as their compo pick shifts everyone downward just doesn’t make any sense to me. There should definitely not be any first found affected picks because of a soft rule that supports clubs who cannot keep players.

I don't get the whinging over the McGovern deal. People realise that if we had kept #13 we'd have to give that up to match a Blakey bid anyway? And which big name were we gonna get exactly?
I think it's because people are disappointed we didn't do the deal with the other clubs with two picks in the 20s. West Cokes picks 20 and 21 would have been nice.

The suggested pick swap is an interesting play. Can’t see why Sydney would be in a rush to help out with a pick swap unless we have intentions to use the picks elsewhere. If it’s purely for draft points we could have held out longer and pressed for better returns.

Bit concerning the potential Hanners trade feels like an afterthought now and it sounds like we'll get stuff all. The main benefit will be getting his salary off our books which makes me think we have bigger issues with our salary cap?

Underwhelming so far, unless there is a huge twist to come in this trade period or we're aiming to lure a big name next year.

We're still going after Langdon and possibly Scully. We obviously believe both those trades only require a second round so I think we're just trading for more trade resources

Could be a number of reasons without knowing the bigger picture:

- With Scully/Langdon/etc... trades they may have angled for our first round pick, so if we don't have it we can't trade it for them
- Carlton have 2 * 20's picks now, they may not have next week (They still need Setterfield which would have been one of those 20's picks, potentially they would have found another way for McGovern)
- We may know what we are doing now in terms of Langdon/VandenBerg/Clarke/etc.... so we know what we need
- .....

I am just spitballing.

That would have been a good thing though wouldn't it? Pick 20 and our next pick would be used and pick 21 would be a live pick for us to draft someone else with. Wouldn't it work like that?
