Who wants a 188cm utility with slick skills and ridiculous strength overhead for his height?

http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/...ee-2018-afl-draft-buku-khamis-making-his-mark

At 17 years old, South-Sudanese refugee Buku Khamis came to the sport of AFL late in life, but he's already got tongues wagging about the draft.

On the footy field, he's known as 'Buuks' but 10 years ago Buku Khamis had never even heard of the AFL.

Now the 17-year-old is shaping up to be a legitimate 2018 draft pick.

A refugee from South Sudan, Khamis moved to Australia in 2006 with his parents and brothers.

He took up the sport during his last year of primary school after going to watch a game at the MCG, and he wanted to learn more about the Australian way of life.

"I think it's a culture that's big in Australia, and a culture I wanted to be a part of and that I enjoy," he said.

He began with a club in St Albans, north-west of Melbourne, but quickly caught the attention of scouts from TAC Cup side, the Western Jets.

His skills earned him selection to the AFL Next Generation Academy, an initiative to help fast-track the development of footballers from multicultural backgrounds to the league.

Khamis is now a future draft option for the Western Bulldogs.

But he said the sport has given him so much more.

"We went to the Northern Territory last year for an intensive training camp and it's definitely helped me become more confident as a person and create new friends as well," he said.

He may have needed a confidence boost off the field, but with a ball in hand he has an x-factor.

Western Jets Coach Torin Baker said every match Khamis creates something special.

"It is really unique and is certainly something that catches the eye, it's rare qualities you don't see all the time," Baker said.

Khamis is part of a new generation of footballers benefiting from the AFL's effort to improve pathways for multicultural athletes.

Baker said the initiatives are changing the future cultural mix of the code, and also uncovering new sources of talent.

Coach Torin Baker reviews match vision with Buku Khamis

"It gives the game something different and shows the game is embracing all people from all different backgrounds. It's really exciting to be a part of," he said.

It's an opportunity Khamis doesn't intend to waste.

"I have a lot of support around me and I reckon I have self drive and motivation to work hard and be disciplined, and sacrifice a lot of things because I know it'll be worth it in the end," he said.

And with the 2018 draft drawing closer, the end is now in sight.

He is quite the footballer. Been a bit inlucky with injuries this year. One of the best pure mids in this draft at this stage. Very agile.

Cheers. That's good to hear.

Who's your early tip for the No 1 pick? I'm guessing it would be out of the King boys, Lukosius, Rankine and Walsh. They look like the top 5 to me at this stage.

nah
MattDougie already says that every year

Wouldn't want to take that away from him :p

In fairness he has been closer to being correct than those suggesting top 4 regular season finishes. Yet no one mocks those people.

What have we finished .... 8,7,10

I see us with another top 10 pick as well. But at this stage we don’t have a second rounder which is sounding not too good at this stage.

Hopefully we can trade back into it. Hopefully West and Khamis have down years so we can get them on the cheap.

North could potentially have a huge haul next year. Scott, Blakey, Thomas all in the academy group plus Crocker on top of that.

Could be a pretty boring draft for us next year. I’d be happy if we just left with these 2. Is there a way we miss out on one of them or because we have ‘rights’ to them, they essentially are ours one way or another?

Hopefully we finish high enough where half of these guys are out of our reach.
If West gets an early bid, then it doesn't matter anyway.
Funny if we end up with another Bailey Williams.

I'm locking in top 4 if we stay injury free, this list is Good, very very good

We can vault that.

Imo we don’t have a top 4 list. Neither do the tigers.

It wasn’t talent that took both sides to a flag but endeavour and intent and some cleaver coaching or game styles that caught others out.
I’ll be pumped if we made finals in 2018 as I don’t see it on the cards
