I’m sure he’ll end up nothing like him, but he reminds me a lot of a young Luke Hodge in that video. Obviously doesn’t have the size or versatility but has very similar hands and a crashing into the pick style that Hodge had when he played midfield early on.

Not sure if it's been posted but grundog did a bit off a write-up on west.

Rhylee West
Calder Cannons/Victoria Metro
Inside Midfielder/Small Forward
Height: 180 cm Weight: 80 kg D.O.B: 12/07/2000

The son of Western Bulldogs legend Scott West has a lot of traits like his father. Rhylee West is a small midfielder who can play forward if need be. After a stunning u16s campaign where he was named as Vic Metro MVP as well as making the AFL Academy level 1 squad. In 2017 he has been locked away playing school footy for St. Kevin’s with an occasional appearance in the TAC Cup for the Calder Cannons. At TAC Cup level he was solid without being outstanding, averaging 16 disposals, four marks and five tackles in the midfield. However, what the stat line doesn’t show is how composed and balanced he is with ball in hand. Rhylee in the midfield adds some composure in contested situations and an ability to burst away from stoppages if he sees a gap in traffic. This composure and explosiveness make him quite a hard player to contain as he doesn’t need much of the ball to make an impact. Rhylee also is quite skillful with ball in hand. West has some of the better disposal of an inside midfielder as he can often hit targets by foot as well as distribute well by hand in traffic. The knock on West at the moment is about his size at only 180 cm but should affect him to much as he is a high quality player. Rhylee will be the envy of all 17 clubs not able to select him as he is one of the most talented players in the crop and one who could end up being a handy player for the Bulldogs in the future.

It must be very annoying for clubs who never get f/s picks when we somehow churn out gun after gun.

Libba, Wallis, Hunter are the big three but Cordy also handy. Any club would be happy with one of them first three.

Can only think of Geelong who have done better from the rule. And Essendon with Daniher have quality over quantity.

The AFL is genuinely pissed off they cannot gift Father/Son picks to their GWS franchise over the previous 5 years. I have heard on good authority they are looking at expanding the ‘Father-Son’ son rule to any second generation relatives of players, players friends, or any member or the franchise. Incredible if true.

They get cheap academy players instead, that should compensate that they have to wait 20 years for father son picks.

80kg for a 17yo ... that's a pretty solid unit. At that age they're normally around 65-70kg if they are 180cm tall.
I see a bit of Sam Mitchell in him although perhaps his kicking isn't as good. Seems to lack much depth on his kicks too, just like his dad. Still, if he can extract and distribute like his dad he'll be a great asset.

He's a bull alright. Needs to take the extra 1/2 second to get the best option. Certainly looks to have guts at this point and guts is enough. Now you ladies c'urry on.

We're going to need to find at least another 3rd rounder, probably two, to afford West and Khamis I reckon. Hopefully we can catch one by trading out some depth. Roberts and Campbell the ideal candidates; Webb, Collins and Jong the others in my mind.

Definitely need more picks for points especially if West doesn't get bidded on before our first.

Not sure about trading Campbell unless English really starts to come on or we get some no.1 ruck depth cheap.

With Boyd, Roughead, Trengove, Schache and English I reckon we'll be fine in that area. If we get a third rounder for him I'd be jumping at it (don't think we would though).

Going off that vision of West, there is a lot to like. Not convinced he's a first round pick though. The top end of this draft looks pretty great.

Loved the look of these last year and I think they would fit our needs

Ian Hill - Fast, beautiful kick, X-factor
Curtis Taylor - bash and crash fwd/mid, X-factor
Matthew Green - Super classy, good mover
Connor Rozee - Skillful, athletic

Others like Bailey Smith, Zane Barzen, Tom McKenzie looked very impressive as well.

Just asked Knightmare who posts for ESPN what he thought of West and he said 10-30 depending on his year and he has actually watched him play unlike all of us guessing on here :)

Reality is it is unlikely we will use our first pick on him as he will slip into 2nd round pick and given the discount we get we can use our 3rd round on him

We haven’t got a second round pick so it will need to be a 3rd plus additional picks maybe. We have 2 4th rounders as well at the moment

So, our next recruiting dude will have a free hit this year.
Maybe that's part of the reason we agreed to release Dal early? I'd assume a heap of work would be done on these two boys already and we may already know whether or not we want them. Let the rest of the recruiting staff step up to find some gems for the rookie draft etc. and gives ourselves a bit of extra time to find an adequate replacement.

We will take Kharmis as a B grade rookie at no cost.

TOP 2018 DRAFT PROSPECTS

Tom McKenzie (Fitzroy junior, 11 games in 2017): “Tom won our rising star award last year. He’s a highly skilled, smooth-moving midfielder. He played predominantly on the wing last year but has physically developed over the off-season, so we’ll look to move him more into the contests this year.”

Tom Hallebone (Preston Bullants junior, three games in 2017): “Tom is 201cm and extremely athletic for his height. He’s a ruckman who we think can stretch his opponent around the ground because he runs really well and has a fantastic leap. He’ll do some really exciting things.”

Harrison Grace (Fitzroy junior, 12 games in 2017): “Harrison is a great size and shape as a midfielder/forward. He has good lateral movement, he’s aggressive and his overhead marking is a point of difference. We’re training him to be an inside midfielder.”

Joel Naylor (Whittlesea junior, six games in 2017): “Joel is a 19-year-old player who has been training really well. Last year he progressed from defence to play as a forward, but he tore his meniscus pretty badly mid-season. He’s quite strong-bodied so he’s really good one-on-one and he has a beautiful kick.”

Mark Baker (Park Orchards junior, 18 games in 2017): “Mark was a tall developing player as a top-ager last year, which was his first year in the program. He’s now starting to fill out and look like an AFL player physically. He’s extremely athletic for his height and we’ll probably play him more as a forward than a backman this year.”

PRE-SEASON PERFORMER

Ryan Gardner (bottom-age Montmorency junior, one game in 2017): “Ryan missed the last two seasons through injury but he’s really professional. He pushes himself with every training session and drives the standards even though he’s a bottom-ager. He’s a versatile, smooth-moving player with nice skills and speed.”

LEADERSHIP MATERIAL

Braedyn Gillard (top-age Montmorency junior, 19 games in 2017) is highly rated internally amongst the staff and is a fantastic leader around the group. He, Tom McKenzie, Mark Baker and Brody Bell (top-age South Morang junior, nine games in 2017) will be in the mix for the leadership group.”

POTENTIAL SURPRISE PACKET

Justin McInerney (top-age Banyule junior, first TAC Cup season): “Once we got Justin into our program mid-last year, we realised how much potential he has. He has some serious speed and power and a beautiful kick, and I think he’ll catch the eye of recruiters with his courage for a lightly-bodied kid. He isn’t afraid to take the game on and we’ll look at playing him off half back or a wing.”

FAMOUS FOOTBALL RELATIONS

Xavier Naish (bottom-age Ivanhoe junior, first TAC Cup season): Son of Chris Naish (161 AFL games for Richmond and Port Adelaide from 1990-99) and brother of Patrick Naish (selected by Richmond in 2017 AFL Draft).

Aaron Castagna (bottom-age Warrandyte junior, first TAC Cup season): Brother of Jason Castagna (30 AFL games for Richmond from 2015-present).

Mitchell Wild (top-age South Morang junior, six games in 2017) and Cameron Wild (bottom-age South Morang junior, first TAC Cup season): Sons of Jason Wild (70 AFL games for Collingwood from 1995-99).

Adam Carafa (bottom-age Banyule junior, first TAC Cup season): Son of Tony Carafa (16 AFL games for Fitzroy from 1987-88).

WHAT TO EXPECT

“We want to be known as a team that’s ultra-competitive. We put a high emphasis on defensive pressure, while we’ll also look to take the game on with ball in hand, as we think we did last year.”

COACHING PANEL ADDITIONS

Adam Baldwin and James Ray are our backs and forwards coaches respectively. Adam was one of our U16 line coaches last year and James has come across from Williamstown in the VFL. (Ex-Williamstown ruckman) Nick Meese is our rucks coach and we’re also lucky enough to have (ex-North Melbourne champion) Brent Harvey and (2017 Richmond AFL premiership players) Josh Caddy and Kane Lambert all coming in one night a week.”
