To the smart followers of this:

Besides Quaynor and Kelly how many more players are we realistically going to take in the draft and if so around what number pick?

And who might we look at deep into the draft?
Aren't we realistically likely to use all of our picks with points value on Quaynor and Kelly (and still have a deficit potentially) (anything up to pick 59 & 60 that we traded in from the Cats for our pick 51).
Roughead we used our pick 75 on
So only a late pick will be available on anyone else e.g. matching an Atu B bid which may come late and we use our pick 93?

I agree. I think that all our picks with points attached (41,44,57,59,60) will be needed to get both IQ and Kelly. In all likelihood we will probably also still go into deficit on the 2nd round in 2019. This is on the assumption that IQ gets a bid in top 20 and Kelly in the top 30.

We will then get a pick allocated at the back end of the draft to fill our remaining open list spot. If a bid was to come in for Atu B after pick 56 we will still be able to use that last pick (irrespective of what it is). This is due to the 197 point discount given to the matching of any bid after the first round and picks from 56 onwards having a value < 197.

If Atu B was to be bid on before 56 I think we can still take him with that late pick but if would cause us to go into further deficit in 2019.

I think this is why we are still a chance to take a player like Jake Neade as a DFA. If a bid comes in too early for Atu B then we pass and just take Neade with that last pick to fill the need for that small pressure fwd.

Would we have a pick for that after the points to get Will and Quaynor?

Yes. You have to have 3 Picks so we have a Late one that Could be used on Grundy IF he lasts that long

I have us with 1 free list spot after taking Kelly and IQ and promoting Thomas and Mihocek so it's possible.

Although we have no priority access to him like we do with the Academy and FS kids so he would have to make it through to that last pick; whatever it may be.

Not sure we have to take 3 picks Dave. Taking IQ and Kelly and promoting Thomas and Mihocek meets our obligation. Although we will still be left with a free list spot. So we will likely take 3 picks but are not obligated.

Rookie upgrades are counted in those 3 picks Dave so we can cover off on 2 of those picks merely be elevating Thomas and Mihocek. I think the question though was more would we still have a high enough pick left to grab Grundy before others chime in if we use picks for matching IQ and Kelly bids. I doubt we will. Doesn't appear to be a lot of KPP prospects in this draft and I think that'll elevate a few of them higher than you'd think.

Depends on how he is Rated and Possible Trade's

Is it me just, but why not do the whole draft on the one night. Including rookies?

Just seems a bit odd one big production night, then the next day ...

A taste of Richmond, but Collingwood looms for Quaynor
Daniel Cherny16 November 2018 — 1:50pm

  • Isaac Quaynor has grown up a Collingwood supporter, has been a member of the club’s next generation academy, trained with the Magpies for a couple of weeks at the end of last year, and this time next week is expected to be a Collingwood player.

So then you might be surprised to read that he spent a day every week at Richmond this year. Quaynor finished school last year, and away from his looming professional football career, he is eyeing work elsewhere in the sports industry.

When he was told about the Richmond Institute of Sports Leadership by friend and Oakleigh Chargers teammate Matthew Day, the dual diplomas in sport development and leadership management seemed like a good fit.

So in a year in which he is poised to become a Pie, Quaynor was at the Punt Road home of their arch rivals every Monday. Not that he had all that much interaction with the Tigers football department.

  • “I think they intentionally keep us out of their way,” Quaynor told The Age.

“We got to go and watch them train out the window for a little bit, which is pretty cool, and we’ve had a few guest speakers from the football department come and talk to us about it. It’s pretty interesting. I’m pretty lucky to be exposed to it.”

Collingwood fans can rest easy though. A trade for picks - and more importantly their attached points - with Geelong last month has left the Pies reasonably well placed to match bids for rebounding defender Quaynor and tall defender Will Kelly, available to the club as a father-son selection.

A bid for Quaynor is expected to come in the back half of the first round, with some talk in club land that the Pies’ hand could even be forced inside the first 10 selections.

The story of how Collingwood have rights over Quaynor as part of their next generation academy zone begins with Quaynor’s mother Kate, who ventured to Ghana for a music trip, where she met Isaac’s dad Yaw.

Yaw moved back with Kate two decades ago, although Isaac has only once visited his father’s homeland, celebrating his 11th birthday in Ghana where he met his extended family, some of whom he continues to keep in touch with via social media.

Isaac had one view of what to expect, and what he found in the capital Acra wasn’t what he had in mind.

“I had that stereotypical view that it was going to be dirt and villages,” Quaynor recalls.

“It was actually big buildings and nice infrastructure, malls and stuff like that.”

He’d like to get back to Ghana soon, and when that happens he’s likely to head there as a Pie. Time spent training at the Holden Centre last year was enlightening, and he knows the step up to AFL level will be significant.

“Just seeing the people you’ve been barracking for was pretty eye-opening for me. The standard that a lot of those players drive is something I really want to work to.

“When I was out on the track, the intensity of it all was five steps above what I’m exposed to at TAC Cup level."

The Collingwood faithful can expect a disciplined and hard-nosed backman.

“I’d like to think I’m just a competitor. [Pretty basic, I don’t like to go too far outside what I know I can do, I just try to play the game basically.

“I pride myself on defending first and making sure my man doesn’t score, and then being aggressive and being attacking, rebounding down the field.

Because they want it to be like the NFL Draft that is over 3 Nights but they have Hundreds of Picks and not 70-80 Picks.

The AFL Heads want to be just like America So Hard

It could be a very long night! This year they have brought in live trading of picks to the draft for the first time, and they no doubt want to allow themselves plenty of time to see how that pans out. According to what it says on the Pies' website, they have allocated one hour for another delisted player free agency period [Friday 23 November (1.30pm – 2.30pm): AFL delisted player free agency period (3)], so trying to fit everything into the one night would surely not be practical.

The new format doesn't annoy me! I like the fact that the National Draft will be spread over a couple of days. When watching/following it in the past it has always bugged me when some of those crucial early selections come and go in a hurry - now there might be a fair bit more time for fans to ponder the significance of some of those selections, and the impact they might have on upcoming selections.

I also like the fact that all the drafts will be out of the road in the space of 24 hours. It used to annoy me when there was a fair gap between the National Drafts and the others; that will no longer be an issue.

It pisses me off because the draft being at night means I can actually watch it (I’m living in Germany so 10 hours behind right now), but with the likelihood that our picks will be after the first round I’m probably going to miss all the Collingwood picks the following day. I really don’t understand why they couldn’t just do all the rounds of the national draft in one night.

You’ve convinced me; all done to fit each part and one day.

It’s very likely that we’ll match a bid for Quaynor in the first round, so you won’t miss our first.
