Depending on how many players we're going to pick and if he's still available I'd be looking to pick up Dillon O'Reilly, seen a bit of him play and he's got a bit of talent to work with there.
Was one that was pushing first round at the start of the year but now looks to have dropped way back. Definitely has some talent though. I liked what I saw of him too.

Sounds like the story of this draft! It makes you wonder how so many got sucked into calling it a superdraft.

I remember how Ian Hill was talked up this time last year like he was the second coming. Heck even Lukosious has slipped! This time last year Knightmare probably would have given Moore, JDG and our next two 1st round picks to bring him in when the reality is 12 months on there’s a chance he slips outside the top 3...

There will be a lot of re-writing history.

There must be a pretty fair chance that we'll leave Mihocek on the Rookie List. As long as we can keep him happy with his contract it shouldn't really matter to him what list he's on, especially as he can still play from rd. 1 next year. Given that list spots are rather precious at the moment, they may keep him where he is for at least another year.

Can't, we need 2x spots for Broomy and 1x Irish recruit.

Fairly sure KM would probably give all that up for Lukosious still. Never seen anyone have such a hard on for a draftee.

Since we had our list with 39 Primary and 5 Cat. A Rookies this year we may well have the same setup for next year. Of those 5 2018 Rookies, Appleby, Lynch and Mihocek could stay where they are, Oxley is expected to be delisted and Thomas to be elevated. That would leave the two Rookie spots for Broomhead and the Irish recruit. So still 5 Cat. A Rookies, with Madgen and the other Irishman as Cat. B Rookies.

As for the senior list, Beams, Roughead and Thomas go on, Fasolo and Broomhead* off, plus Blair, Kirby and Smith are likely to drop off. That would only leave room for the two National Draft picks (Quaynor and Kelly most likely), one more if Murray can be removed in time.

Just for the record, I sent an email to the AFL's Ken Wood asking if there had been any change to the rules regarding Irish Rookie List players, and the answer was that there is "no change". barrackers

I'm all for us getting players that can be recruited outside the system, Irish players in particular, and getting two at once must give us a fair chance of getting at least one good one! It just seems like an awfully strange time to make such a move, with list spots being so tight.

Need clarifying from our experts here.

I thought you can have with no complications 3 Cat B players.

Isn't that:
Madgen
Keane
Tohill

Or am I missing something?

There's a rule that says that if you have more than one Irish player as a Rookie, only one can be a Cat. B Rookie, the other(s) must be Cat. A.

Edit. It can be a bit confusing when you see things like this on the AFL website: "COLLINGWOOD'S global talent search might well produce another couple of gems after the Magpies signed two promising Irish teenagers as Category B rookies." Ideally, the article would have pointed out that, though both players had been signed outside the system, only one would actually be a Cat. B Rookie! I was hoping that perhaps the rule had been altered (prompting my email to Ken Wood), but no such luck.

Yep, posted something similar about additions and movement between senior and rookie lists.

You'd assume Ken Wood knows what is going on but we still seem to have conflicting messages about Irishmen and Cat B listing. Be very interesting to watch how it all rolls out.

Ken Wood certainly should know. As I just said in the (tacked on bit) previous post, articles like that one on the AFL website should be more clear about such things.

The rule was apparently changed in the new CBA, so both the Irish boys can be cat b now it seems.

Loving everyone's contribution.

It is confusing as pointed out above.

35d ta.

Like any year, talent has faded in and out. But you’re right a lot have been talked up more than any other year. I still think there are going to be some rippers taken early and later on this year.

KM would still do that any day of the week :p. Has him as his number 1 still it’s just funny that Carlton are probably going to take the wrong guy imo.

Fwiw I think Rozee is going to be the best player of this draft.

Ken Wood is classed as Manager - TPP Assurance & Advice, according to his email (signature). He certainly should know what the current rules are, and (in response to my query regarding any possible change in the rules regarding Irish rookies) assured me that there was no change. So that must be the way it is, unfortunately.

It would be so much easier if we could slot both the Irish boys onto the Cat. B list, but it seems we can't!

FWIW I also sent a similar email to Ben Collins, who wrote that article on the AFL website, and he hasn't responded.

Sier, Moore and two firsts l believe. Maybe there was another player thrown in for good measure as well.

While I agree Ken Wood should know, so should our club.

We will get IQ, Kelly and the 2 Irish boys.

I imagine our club people would know all about that rule!! I'll be amazed if we don't get those two players in the draft. We'll probably end up with Atu B. as well, but of course we're eagerly awaiting the announcement of our delistings so we can see just where things stand with the list!

Surely not...
It was very close to that, and yes. In the draft thread or academy thread, fun reading.
Still like his passion though, for the club and what he does with his assessment of young talent, even if some of his trades are strange.

It may be, as MagpieBat suggests here, that we can take Tohill as an international rookie as he is from Northern Ireland. That would free up one rookie spot. I also expect Mihocek gets upgraded once Murray's fate is known.

Nice work, thanks. Great to have clarification.

Given it’s their profession it’s surprising how footy journos or their editors sometimes miss rules like this.
