At the end of the day if Quaynor was to get bid on in the top ten, can we just calm down and enjoy the fact that we're getting a player at least one club believes is a top ten player in the comp? Or similar if slightly lower.

I can foresee the melts but at the end of the day it isn't the worst result.
It’s a fantastic result.
We’d be getting a rated top 10 player for low end picks.

It's not the list size that is the problem here (3 Cat B's are allowed); unfortunately the rules specify that if you have more than one Irish player on your rookie list only one of them can be Cat. B, a second one must be Cat. A. This rule was brought in a few years back to "keep the peace" with the Gaelic sport authorities, as they didn't want AFL clubs stockpiling too many of their players as Cat. B Rookies.
Look up list of current afl team squads in Wikipedia they list 2 cat b Irish players looking forward to tomorrow see ya

Hence Wikipedia is wrong.

Not to worry, the Melbourne Cup Day race book had a blunder in it this year (bet few picked it up; but it was still incorrect).

Happens.

I'm a litle bit more reserved in my judgement in that respect - I don't think he's top 10 material in this draft given the talent that is available, so it would be more a case of Adelaide or GWS trying leverage our position of weakness for no apparent reason (as we can easily match the bid anyway) when there are better prospects still on the board.

It would be a bit of a shitty move to bid with the sole aim of blowing out our points deficit for next year when there are players they rate higher still on the board, but in an era where players and clubs are breaking contracts and clubs are outright attempting to discourage others from drafting local talent prior to the draft nothing would surprise me.

What everybody is telling you is that the Wikipedia page is wrong.

A poster has gotten clarification from a journo who has checked with the AFL and it has been confirmed that one of the Irish boys will have to be placed on the Category A rookie list, as per the rules relating to rookie listed players.

If Quaynor goes as early as rumours are suggesting we won't have much draft picks to do much this draft or next draft
We obviously won't be having many picks at all over the next couple of days, and seemingly most of those picks are as good as spent already, but I still find it very interesting, and can't wait to see how it unfolds. While I'm much more concerned with what Collingwood does than what the other clubs get up to, I want to know who goes where for every pick. Seeing when bids come in for Quaynor and Kelly is of major interest to Pies fans, when/if we get Atu B. is another point of interest, and there's always a chance that we'll pick up someone that we haven't been linked with.

As for next year's draft, I'll worry about that when it gets here!!

The machinations are fascinating in its way.

What I do love second best every year is the real opportunity to learn about the new talent coming in. It’s like reading their resume. Then of course you see if they can do the job.

The best thing I love is learning and seeing the new Collingwood players.

(Quaynor, Kelly look a very nice draft collection for us, then we’ll see where else we land.)
Yep, I absolutely love the draft(s). I really like finding out about all the new players on club lists, where they're from etc., and having so many new players arrive in the AFL at (about) the same time is very exciting. Of course I'm more interested in who Collingwood bring in as opposed to the other clubs' recruits, but I still want to follow every pick in the drafts. Even though there's obviously a good reason why they do it, I get annoyed when clubs start passing on selections (and when the draft ends!), because there's always a player or two who I really wanted someone to pick up but who gets ignored!!

EFA :)

I’ll save my melt for Kelly’s bid. My confidence is at about 99.9% that we’ll be fine, however if IQ receives a bid early enough to absorb all our 2018 draft points and WK then receives a bid in the 1st round there will be a certain interview discussing “flexibility” in this draft that will be brought up...

Good Morning everyone

It’s Draft Day today

:)

I saw a list on Wikipedia of all afl lists up to date and they had Madgen Keane and tohill as cat b and appleby mihocek and Lynch as rookies Thomas on senior list I am not sure r2 can go on cat b either from nga (not sure) we will find out soon enough

One of the Irish lads needs to be Cat A, the other Cat B. Wiki is wrong that they can both be Cat B. It's been asked of and clarified by an AFL official so take it to the bank. I'm pretty sure Atu B can be included as a Cat B as an NGA; is that right 35Daicos?

I can 100% confirm this is correct that one of the Irish kids is Cat A and one will be Cat B. I'm also told we won't have a live selection in the Rookie Draft - hence Atu slotting into the other Cat B slot.

So for us not to have a live selection in the Rookie Draft it means we'll be taking 3 players in the National Draft?

Meaning 38 on the Primary List

Then 6 on the Rookie List
Lynch
Mihocek
Appleby
Murray
Broomhead
Keane

Silly question, if we have dibs on AtuBosen- and we can place him as Cat B, why don't we just do it and as such how can in theory any other bid go on him if we have first rights?

Yep, hence why we're over in WA interviewing players. Get the sense the club won't expect a bid on Atu. So we're looking for value. I'm sure we have kids we rate in the third round that might slide (as they do ever year) but they are just doing their due diligence believing there is value late in WA because often they aren't as well publicised so can get a bargain there.

If only we could just do that with Quaynor!

Nah we have to go through the process and hope Atu does not get a bid in the National Draft. If he gets a bid in the National Draft we have the option to match - meaning our third senior player will be Atu, or if no-one bids, we can either A) take him with our final selection anyway, or B) then place him on our Cat B rookie list. So we get him for nothing on our rookie list, but only if no bid comes in during the National Draft. If anyone is willing to bid during the National Draft, we have to either match or let him go to that club.

It also has to be a bid in the 70s or later as we will likely have no points to match anyway - though we could just go into deficit with like a fourth rounder next year. I'd say the club is expecting the free hit as a Cat B though. It's interesting we've also nominated Bailey Wraith - I don't think he's ready for senior footy, but it could be a "back-up" free hit if Atu does get taken in the National by another club. Showed better signs in TAC Cup finals.

Folks

Ok let’s assume we are taking

Quaynor (what a great name by the way) and f/s Kelly.

Assuming we likely have another pick down back who will it be?

  • Stick your necks out....

I’ll go for Noah Gown simply based on a key sized player who might be available and shows talent (by what I’ve heard and read).

Pie 4 Life Snoop Dog Knightmare

My final phantom draft is up. Every pick. Every bid. *See signature or check ESPN's AFL site.

Atu I'm predicting goes through to rookie draft and can be had there.

Other than Reid, Durak Tucker has been mentioned as a defender from WA.

My dream choice is obviously Noah Gown. Sydney Stack if he slid through I can see also considering, though I have him going earlier.

Yeah imagine if we lost Kelly because of it.

I think Adelaide are going to make a few enemies out of this draft. I received an email from Kieren Briggs' dad last night telling me the GIANTS have told them the Crows are going to bid for him which is why he's now coming to Marvel Stadium.

The Crows had better prepare for when Luke Edwards comes round in two years, I tell you what.

Really appreciated all your work.
I read your espn stuff quite a bit.
I’d love getting Gown if it could happen.

Folks: the BF threads on the draft itself has lots of great info and phantom threads. Knock yourself out.

Actually I’ve been looking at the name, and if broken down it’s ok to get right.

Bosen Avu Lagi

Once the brain sees it simply, it’s even easy to pronounce, remember etc.
Speak for yourself saintly, anything over five letters l have trouble :(

Silly way to go if they don’t absolutely want the player.
Nothing really gained lots of goodwill lost.
