I think Carlton will be 1 of the surprise packets in 2019. They've got some really talented kids who are all another year further advanced in their development.

2018 JOHN NICHOLLS MEDAL LEADERBOARD
1st - Patrick Cripps (166 votes)
2nd - Kade Simpson (108 votes)
3rd - Ed Curnow, Charlie Curnow (98 votes)
5th - Dale Thomas (71 votes)
6th - Liam Jones (48 votes)

7th - Zac Fisher (47 votes)
8th - Sam Rowe (43 votes)
9th - Matthew Wright (39 votes)

10th - Marc Murphy (39 votes)

How are Carltank going to improve when an old man Simpson is their 2nd best, old man Daisey 5th best, Jones 6th, Rowe 8th and not offered a new contract and 9th retiring.
Apart from Docherty coming back from his knee I can't see it.

I've decided to take lunch early to watch the start of the draft. Should see Kelly selected in the first half an hour if not the first ten minutes

Then fair while to our next pick

Yep. There's 4 factors to consider, how good is Stocker, how good are next years first rounders likely to be, where will Carlton finish, where will Adelaide finish. If they think Stocker is worthy of a top 5 pick in next year's draft, they can't really lose on the trade, regardless of ladder positions, and if ladder positions go in their favour, they'll end up with a big win. So to me, it comes down to the rating of Stocker versus next year's top 10. I certainly wouldn't criticise the trade unless I had the knowledge to make a call on Stocker versus next year's best kids.

Agree. There is also the fact that Carlton will get another strong midfielder in to support Cripps who will have +1 year developmentally over whoever they would have taken next year.
I actually like the move from them, I could feasibly see them finish outside of the bottom 4 next year with Docherty returning and with natural development of their kids. While this would still mean a top-10 pick, the gap closes a bit when you consider Adelaide is likely to have a similar season results-wise (12th this year).

Hypothetically, Carlton finish 14th, with the Crows at 10th.
A pick 5, say for 9 and this year's 19 (which they clearly rated Stocker a fair bit higher than) isn't the worst move.
Points-wise it would be 1878 for 1469 +948 (2417)
Which makes Carlton +539 on the trade (Roughly pick 34)

A worse case for them would be Carlton say 16th and the Crows sliding into the 8 at say, 7th.
So then it's pick 3 next year for pick 12 next year and 19 this year.
On points: 2234 for 1268 + 948 (2216)
Meaning it's pretty much an equal trade on points.

If I were a Carlton fan (god forbid) I'd be pretty happy to see them make a play and grab a bloke this year that they clearly rated higher than a few other clubs, backing themselves in to ever-so-slightly speed up their climb back up the ladder.

On the other hand, perhaps they've pulled another Boekhorst, wouldn't that be a shame! :D
