List Mgmt. 2018 Draft thread.

One thing really stood out to me, watching the draft, last night and a bit of today.

Most of the kids drafted were taller than their parents. Often by a lot. Will Kelly towers over his dad, and I’ve never thought of Craig as being short.

What’s going on? In one generation? Just seems odd.

So Blairy father son is still a chance?

Which of the Irish boys did we list at the Cat A rookie.

Would have thought Pies would have taken Wraith as a Cat B. Free hit but I guess players have to earn the right.

Suspect Marsh may be someone we look at next year. Surprised we didn't find a spot for Pickett but its hard to see where. We have to stick with Murray, we set a precedent so its only fair we wait for the B Sample. For mine at that point all bets are off.

We're still waiting to hear who they've gone for. Most likely the one they think is the most advanced will get the nod.

Once we committed to rookie listing Broomhead and Murray we lost the ability to rookie list anyone as Cat A. That and taking Atu B in the ND who i'm happy we picked.

It's interesting that we were in WA doing interviews and both Pickett and Stack went undrafted. Suspect they may not have interviewed well.

On Wraith, I think given we drafted in Kelly and Keane it was going to be hard for us to take another key defender. Without a VFL reserves we wouldn't have a position to give and develop him in. He'd be well down the pecking order.

I'm also keen to know which Irish lad was Cat A listed. My guess would be Tohill but who knows.

They're automatically a Cat A. Don't need to be drafted.

The rules (AFL Rules 2018.pdf) suggest we can still have a hold on Wraith for the next 12 months, so if he develops well enough in that time we could have another look at him:-

15.9 Over Age NGA Players
If a Qualified NGA Player is not included on a Club’s Primary List or Rookie List after attaining draft eligibility age, a Club may retain the Qualified NGA Player in the Football Year following the year they attain draft eligibility age for a period of one year in the Club’s Next Generation Academy, provided such Qualified NGA Player attends any screening/testing as directed by the AFL (including the AFL Combine), has previously nominated for the National Draft but has not been selected in any Draft and the General Counsel has granted his approval.

They're automatically a Cat A. Don't need to be drafted.

One will need to be a Cat B or we will exceed our Cat A rookie quota of 6: Lynch, Appleby, Mihocek, Murray, Broomhead, Irish Lad. It's been done to death.

Which would probably align a lot better with expected retirements. Goldsack, Reid, Dunn all possibilities. At least we'd be in a better position to develop him in the VFL then. I suspect we just didn't rate him that highly though.

Jealous of Saints getting Hind from the Essendon VFL. They better not get Jok

I liked him as an option off HB with Murray out the door early next year! Ah well if the club liked him they’d have worked something out with Carlton or kept a pick up their sleeve. Missing on Gown by two selections hurt a smidge (like his competitiveness for a big), but swings and roundabouts.

Hey Sco, I know you were concerned with Ned Guy following the trade period but you were holding your powder dry until after the draft. How do you rate it with how it all panned out?

Jono Marsh still not taken.

Seems a few clubs have kept list spots so I assume there's still some chance. Maybe even we'll look at him should things go as expected with Murray.

So Wraith was not Rookied I see
I’m not sure he was even available for clubs to pick. Last year clubs nominated players pre rookie draft and they just went straight to the cat B list iirc.

Wasn’t the rookie draft supposed to be at 7pm?
Fake news :D

Was said about 6.

I think it started 5.30 or so.

The idea I believe was once the ND proper concluded clubs would have a designated break to review, strategies, prepare and even a little pit stop and some food....
Then off they went to do the rookie draft.

Another ex-Collingwood (list) player in Jye Bolton missed out again, despite having just won his second Sandover Medal.

What a tough tough tough business football can be.

Cut throat.

I think he would have been available for all clubs to pick, because we didn't nominate him (after the National Draft) prior to the Rookie Draft. The Western Bulldogs lodged paperwork for NGA player Buku Khamis at that stage, pre-selecting him as a Cat. B Rookie.

Does anyone think Murray's rookie spot is anything other than a courtesy until his B Sample is ratified and then his contract is torn up?
He agreed to be put on a rookie contract so that we could use the main list spot in the draft. Least he could do.
Asserting that Murray is 'more valuable' than Broomhead is crazy talk.

Not so much a courtesy but a legal obligation to honour his contract until his B sample comes back.
