Fair assessment.

Oh well.

I’d rather have looked at trying to get Lukosius and build from there.
But we do have De Goey and Cox with the swoop squad so we’ll make do.

How good if Elliott can be healthy?

Just imagine defences trying to deal with our boys PLUS Elliott?

Cox, De Goey,
Stephenson, Thomas, Hoskin-Elliott, and Elliott

Not sure how we could have expected to realistically trade up to pick two. Even if we passed on Beams, turning pick 18 into two would have been a stretch. At least he hasnt landed at a real club.

And that is exactly correct.

Wasn’t really ever going to happen.

Anyway as you say he’s going to a non club.

"Money" includes length of contract. Not just the total cash offer. It was definitely a factor, although what he was on at GC is irrelevant because he was never staying.

I dont think Collingwood was comfortable with the length of contract that Richmond was prepared to show, so as a result we didnt pitch as hard for him as them.

Also the amount and timing of payments needs to be considered. Receiving $1m in Yr 1 is far more valuable that receiving $500k in Yr 1 even if the $$ are about the same over the length of the contract.

Overall, I thought Lynch's reasoning (if true) was valid. He wants to play and learn from Riewoldt, which is fair enough given he hasmt been in a position to play and learn from a good senior forward. It makes more sense than what the Pies and Hawks could offer in the forward line. I dont think he would have chosen the Tigers if Riewoldt wasn't there.

I hope Anton Tohill is the Irish boy we've made a Category A. Would love to see him play a game next year, already has the size of a key forward and Gaelic football has a lot of transferable skills.

I noticed KM has stated that he rated Marty Hore above 'most' of the Collingwood backmen, and so rated Melbourne's draft well highly on the back of this selection.
For a 188cm defender, I'm trying to work out who he would have replaced in our backline? Howe? Maynard? Crisp? Probably Goldsack? Assuming a fit Dunn and Scharenberg, I just can't see how he is better than most of our existing backline.

Hore seems like a good ordinary footballer.
Let’s be honest great worker etc but at most a basic medium talent.
Wish him well.
But if we had him, we’re not suddenly a better football team.

Yeah and I think outsiders under state how much the existing club knows about the players they see first hand on and off the track each week. It’s a huge advantage not given enough credit. If Hore was better than most of our defenders, I’d have no doubt the club would have picked him up last year or this year.

Hore is simply not big enough to play key position at AFL level and he isn't overtly quick.

With Langdon re-signing the option of drafting Hore was taken off the table IMO and with Howe, Scharenberg, Maynard, Crisp, Goldsack, Murphy and Appleby already AFL listed his drafting wasn't a high priority to begin with.

I don't know why we're holding back on announcing/deciding which of the Irish lads is to be the Cat. A Rookie. It seems that even the AFL hasn't been notified. I'm not sure by when we need to have this decision made (assuming it hasn't yet been made), but I thought it would have been done by now.

We'll be able to elevate either Madgen or whoever is the other Cat. B Rookie to replace Scharenberg from the start of the season anyway, so both the Irish rookies will be in with a chance of playing senior football as long as they're progressing well enough.

This list (on the AFL website) names the players who would have been formally added to AFL lists the other day:

Category B rookies
James Madden (Brisbane) – International – Ireland
Matthew Owies (Carlton) – Three-year non-registered
Mark Keane (Collingwood) – International – Ireland*
Anton Tohill (Collingwood) – International – Ireland*
Stefan Okunbor (Geelong) – International – Ireland
Callum Brown (GWS) – International – Ireland
Austin Bradtke (Melbourne) – Three-year non-registered
Guy Walker (Melbourne) – Three-year non-registered
Red Og Murphy (North Melbourne) – International – Ireland
Samuel Alabakis (St Kilda) – Three-year non-registered
Patrick Bines (West Coast) – Three-year non-registered
Brodie Riach (West Coast) – Three-year non-registered

* One of the two Collingwood International Rookies will be a Category A Rookie.

Always odd that simple announcements seem to take so long like which is Cat A which is Cat B of the Irish.

Not certain even one opposition club is holding up their planning awaiting our announcement;).

I believe final list lodgement is Tuesday. Maybe it's just something the club feels isn't necessary to make an announcement about.

For it to matter, we'd have to have no long term injuries. What's the likelihood of this? And if we get that lucky with injuries, what's the likelihood of either Irishman being considered for selection?

My money is on Tohill to be the Cat B. Sounds like there was more interest in Tohill, therefore we may have had to offer him more money. If this is the case, he'd be a better choice for cat b, because cat b salaries don't count in salary cap - I think.

Yes, nobody tends to make big announcements about such things! When St Kilda brought in the two Irish players at the same time a while back I don't think it was revealed for quite a while which was which! I remember having a discussion with the chap who runs the excellent Draftguru website, he wasn't sure who was who, and found it quite frustrating, even more so because he was a Saints supporter!

The AFL should have up to date club lists shown in an easy to find spot on their website. Fans shouldn't have to guess at such things. Especially now the new rookie rule has come in (and we're getting a mid-year draft again) lists won't be "set" for the next year after the end of year drafts like once was the case, so they should be doing that. The AFL Record Season Guide (and Football Record) indicates which players are Cat. A and which are Cat. B, but certainly this year they got quite a few wrong. Hopefully they'll do it better next time around, but I still don't like having to wait until about February when those publications come out to find out!

This is a bug bear of mine.

In this age on sophisticated internet, we really should have simple access to all the clubs updated lists and structures as they (decisions) are made. Naming all 40 seniors, 6 Cat A 3 Cat B or whatever.

Eg look at the club website today (and yes there is certain AFL control on style format and updating) but really we should be able to look at it and no longer see Fasolo, McLarty etc. (even removing Oxley so not to upset CFC2010 )

And see listed Beams, Kelly etc.
Surely it’s a simple enough process.
Plus their status should be clear.

Of course when the clubs have official photo day, after that the actual picture profile can be formally updated.

Just looks amateurish in today’s world.

I also disagree with Knights assessment of our draft. But I don't call into question his support of the club for it. I don't think it is ordinary that Knight thinks we had a poor draft; it's just his honest assessment.

IMO, the washup of this draft period is simply an opportunity for KM to re-assess his rating of NGA and FS. As it is I’ll back his views on underagers tenfold over almost every nuffy on BigFooty and given his ratings for 2018 his draft grade was generous. Definitely not worth touching on club support either way!

It's certainly something that bugs me! I do look at the player list pages on the club website every day (at least until they've finally updated it) just hoping to see that they've done something!! Fasolo has been shown on the Carlton senior list page for weeks, along with the other players they traded in. Someone should at least be able to remove him and the delisted players from our pages, and not make us wait until Xmas time or whenever they finally get it done. It really should be done better in this day and age.

You thinking he got bitten when the sting backfired ?
Got a nasty itch.

Have to admit what a great name Irving Mosquito.

(Irving Washington another fine Irving though he was also Washington Irving as form dictated by Captain Yossarian.)

Maybe the demons were looking for covert quickness...
Getting a Hore might not be so covert....

(I’ll see myself out....)

Disagree. Getting a Hore is usually done covertly.
I’ll have to bow to your experience :p

(I’ll escort myself out again)
