I can't seem to get my mind for our team to get the best possible draft pick.
I want them to win as many games as possible so that they feel the team, game plan and club is in the right path to all re-sign again come 2019, 2020, 2021 when those contracts are up.

For the fans winning is what we use a gauge to see improvement and eventhough we might end up 5 wins (maybe more but that's the realist in me) which will be the same as last year I believe that Fagan will be able to present to the players other tangibles to show improvement. Next year we will hopefully start to bear more fruit in the wins column. I reckon the young guys have bought in so don't be too concerned with re-signing.

These names might help; Schache, Aish, Polec, Longer, Mayes, etc.

Hope you don't mind me intruding - don't forget there was another Selwood at the Eagles being the twin to your Selwood so which team would have got first choice at Joel who has ended up being the best of them all;).
the Selwoods are a great example of drafting. As I recall the Twins were seen as good talent and were split Brisbane and Geelong but the youngest was seen as the real gun and went tot West Coast. Brisbane's was tough but like Selwood's lead with the head and concussion got the better of him. The best in Scott didn't turn out quite like was expected and Joel was the star. One might even argue they changed the rules to stop/protect the Selwoods leading with the head. An interesting study all round that family in potential Vs reality.

Aside from Rayner and Clugg we really have been awful with our early first round picks for a long time.

Believe that was under Rob Kerr so am glad that we have different people running the show now.
Correct, I was so glad when it was announced he was leaving for Essendon. I'll never forget Leppa telling the story that when he arrived at the club and asked Kerr to see our list management plan/strategy Kerr gave him an A4 page with the current list printed on it. That's it. For all of Leppa's failings as a coach, he certainly got the drafting/list management side on the right path and the current admin have taken it to the next level.

You're confusing Joel and Adam. Adam was the second twin and went to West Coast - similar career to Troy but in a better team. Joel was their younger brother, Scott the youngest.

Except we don't really. Conole and Hadley were the top two talent identifiers back then and continued to be so until this year (looks like Hadley has moved to Hawthorn this year). From what I understood Kerr largely dealt with player contracts and trades, similar to Schwab's role after him and Noble's role now.

I recall Hadley being the head recruiter in 2008 to 2010. In 2011 he took a step back to return to WA so he and Conole sort of share the role. Conole became head recruiter in 2012 and took Mayes as his first pick.

Other top 10 picks since have been in chronolical order Aish, Schache, McCluggage and Rayner.

Just like most things the more you do it and work at it the better you get. The last few years have shown a continuous improvement in draft success rates, and appears we are more confident now when it comes to assessing talent.

It's also worth noting that our drafting down the card from 2008 onwards has been pretty good in general - I'd suggest we're probably in the top five or so teams in terms of getting games out of those later picks, e.g. Redden, Rocky, Andrews, Lester, Green, or identifying talent (Yeo, Clarke, Crisp), or even just 50 gamers who were ok but let down because we didn't have better players to put around them like Golby. I didn't even bother including the 2013 draft crop.

At the time Aish was considered a steal at 7, and it was a no brainer that Weitering/Schache were the top 2 picks in '15. Shocking results in the end, but neither were bad picks at the time.

And yet back then, people on this very same Lions forum constantly preached about how brilliant he was

Also we nailed post first round picks in 2013 - Gardiner,McStay,Taylor,Robertson.

I think in previous years we have tried to be too clever and avoided the obvious picks such as Darling. If those guys from 2010 were still with us we may have passed on Berry

Jaden McGrath would have been a beauty too at pick 73 if things had gone differently for him.

I don't think we are alone there, i don't know but I'd like to see if there is a club that has done much better. Suns with all their don't seem to have, Sydney seem much better getting them off the Rookie list. Does anyone know if a club has really nailed their first round pick consistently? Last time I remember all the top picks becoming what they hoped was the Super draft with Chris Judd and that lot.

Everyone but Collingwood passed on Darling. That wasn't us being too clever, it was us going along with the accepted wisdom. Arguably Patrick Wearden was too clever, but that was a pick in the 40s.

Drafting is an imperfect science at best.

If I had to guess, I’d say our recruiters probably have a lot more boxes to tick when scouting players than most other clubs, especially when they are visiting kids and their families.

Fun facts

Every WA player invited to the combine from 2016 and 2017 are on AFL lists right now

The highest pick last year of a TAC player not invited to the combine was Hamish Brayshaw who got an invite the year before.

If your a player in the TAC and you don’t get a combine invite it’s very unlikely that you go top 50 or even in the national at all.

The Bulldogs with their first selection have done expectionally well lately, Stringer/Macrae, Bont, Mclean (2nd rounder but their first selection) Dunkley (same as Mclean) with English, Naughton / Richards the past couple of drafts showing really good signs.

Richmond has done pretty well but that's because they've picked a lot of solid but low upside players recently, after hitting on top 3 picks previously (where it's a lot lot easier to do so).

Saints and Bulldogs is a big game this weekend for final draft positioning.. Saints have been in better form and I hope they get over the line. Bulldogs still to play Carlton which should be a win for them..

Leaves us room to thrash the Suns down at the Swamp and still end up with likely the 4th pick (after Carlton and 2X suns picks). Would be ideal
