With Mcfadyens size and marking ability could anyone foresee him becoming a Josh Caddy type for us? Would be an awesome fit if possible up forward as a mobile 2nd/3rd tall alongside Hipwood!
Much more Bontempelli, and have no fear we will draft him, even if its round two.And we should.

I think Caldwell going as high as five might be a bit of a reach but if we somehow had another pick in the teens would be happy to have him. Would be happy (using Twomey's guide, sort of) with these players at our picks;
1st - Rankine, Smith
2nd - Duursma, Jones, Stocker and could see Jordan Clark being of interest to the Lions. McFadyen at 20 is way too high IMO
3rd - McFadyen
4th - Berry

Im by no mean a draft expert BUT from what i what ive seen/Read would be stoked with J CLark with our 2nd. The pacey Rebounding long kicking defender we need,

Hodge: 1 more yr
Witho: Pushes up into midfield
N Robbo: Come on in leaps in bounds, BUT his disposal can still be hit n miss.
Rich: late 20s, not quick, STILL gets exposed 1 on 1.
HInge: looks good developing nicely in NEAFL.
Cox: I just wish we could get 50-75 games into this guy now, I think he will take time BUT the wait will be worth it.

In comming years a back 6 of Harro, Dizz, N Robbo, Hinge, Cox and Clark. could be pretty impressive.

Do we put a bid on Tarryn Thomas? North always bid on our kids. And I would like to see them have to use their first pick on him.

This might end up being more about making a statement rather than fair value though. Anyone who thinks it's a complete certainty the Suns won't match has never heard an interview with Tony Cochrane. It would be well within his character to force a trade as a middle finger to the Victorian clubs and free agency as a whole.
Im with ya, suns need to make a stand. The talent already lost over the last few years would cruel any club and if they lose may, jack martin, swallow n a cpl of others over the next few years they may as well shut the doors. Gotta send that hands off or pay up message.

No way I would be bidding on him unless we rate him as being the best player available at our selection. North made a mistake by bidding on Declan Watson expecting us to match, the bluff may be called.

Would be worth a rookie spot?

Shane McAdam (Sturt)
The 23-year-old medium-sized forward has rocketed into calculations behind an impressive debut season for the Double Blues. McAdam – the nephew of former St Kilda and Brisbane speedster Gilbert McAdam – is quick, provides tackling pressure, is good overhead and knows where the goals are. He's kicked 23 goals for the season. McAdam joined the Double Blues for pre-season after playing with division three Adelaide Football League club Scotch Old Collegians last year. At the 2015 WA state combine, McAdam equalled Nic Naitanui's running vertical jump record (102cm), was first in the 20m sprint (2.89 seconds) and second in the agility test (8.04 seconds). One of just two mature-age players invited to the national combine.

Yes. New concept for us. Drafting a small forward to play as a small forward

Do any of you want a King?
No, I don't like the 2 meter + KPF/D, it seems very hard to find an elite one these days, Harris Andrews being an exception.

Our need is genuine midfielders 1st followed by running defenders/wing men, David Noble stated this yesterday.

I think a few here are still a bit shell-shocked from the last time we used a top 10 pick to draft a KPP. It didn't work out so well.

We have OK depth in our key posts though. Hipwood, McStay, O are up forward, with Ballenden coming through. Andrews, Gardiner, and possibly Walker down back, with Skinner and Payne coming through.

Midfield is seen as our weakness though. Beams, Zorko and Robinson (Rich too if you skew him into the midfield rotation) all the wrong side of 28. A few good youngsters coming through, absolutely, but you need about 10 midfielders in your best 22, so having 3 or 4 (excl the ones above) isn't really enough.

Agreed. As I've said before I'm totally turned off to them since Schache. Especially when Curnow was drafted soon after him.

Plus we already have Payne, Ballenden and Fullarton to develop all around the 2m mark. Also, Skinner who isn't far off.

Wouldn't mind drafting another highly rated KPD though. Might have missed out not drafting Sam Taylor last year. Will hope Payne turns into something which did look likely before his injury.

Will be happy with a couple of mids and a couple of utilities though. Hopefully a good mix of speed and ball winners.

Well I'm thinking so far, the order will go something like:

1- Walsh (Carlton)
2- Lukosius (GC)
3- Smith (GC)
4- Rankine (St.Kilda)

Based on the consensus of best available from most pundits, that would leave us with one of the King brothers. I think a lot of teams toward the bottom of the ladder this year are starving for good midfielders.

That is the way I think it will pan out on the night as well which will leave us 1 of Riley Collier-Dawkins, Connor Rozee, Jye Caldwell.

Or if one is on offer do we do a live trade down the order and hope to get 2 of Chayce Jones, Liam Stoker, Xavier Duursma, Curtis Taylor, Ian Hill, Jackson Hately.

I would be against trading out our 1st during the trade period unless it involves us getting a gun established mid in eg. Dylan Shiel. Keep it just in case one of the Fab 4 slides, more than likely because of a King twin being taken early.

Josh Schache is actually coming along very nicely now he’s back in Melbourne. Back on the upward trend. Had Fagan, Noble and Co been here when he was first drafted, I can’t help but think the situation would have panned out totally different. I don’t blame Josh. If you’re struggling with Mental Health, you need to do what’s best for you. Not what’s best for anyone else.

High hopes for Payne. Would have made a senior debut this year if not for injury.

Most of our tall timber is also Queensland stock. So i doubt they are going anywhere. Harris, Hipwood, Ballenden, Payne, Eagles, Smith, and Fullarton.

I'm always interested in seeing where guys birthdays are, especially for ones who tend to rise late in the year. McFadyen having a december bday is interesting (Bailey Smith also has one which is impressive given his production). Of those qld guys who have risen in Hipwood and Andrews they have tended to have birthdays near the back end of the year (sept and december)

There have been a few things published over the years about how kids who are at the eldest point of their school year DOB wise tend to statistically go on to higher athletic standards more often than those who have later Birthdays. At young ages the difference in physical and cognitive development are significant and as a result they tend to make underage rep teams more frequently or directed to more high performance programs, thereby increasing the gulf between them due to access to better training at each stage of their development.

Guys who manage to buck this trend and catch up later in their teens and especially increase their production in their final year while having the late bday impress me and I tend to be higher on them than others who peak early and drop off. Once they get into those high systems they can really blossom as they've spent a junior career not being physically on the same level, therefore have learnt to adapt. Once they catch up physically they seem to really be able to make quick gains.

Of course there's lots of exceptions, and its certainly no rule, but there is a not insignificant percentage of those late bloomers who have the later bdays. It tends to be either that, or they come from the country our outside the traditional system or have been injured.

Hi Fatcat read a book about this called "The Outliers" by Malcolm Gladwell which outlined this theory - you can download a pdf copy from the net. It applies a lot to American Sports, especially Ice Hockey - where all the kids playing in a championship game were born in Jan or Feb.

In the younger age groups of Aussie Rules kids still manage to get involved, even if they are smaller and IMO what month you are born doesn't have as big as an advantage as say in other American sports - just do a scan through a team list on footywire.

In saying that if you are born in Nov or Dec and are playing in the under 18 championships you may have a bit more upside than say a kid born in Jan or Feb.

I don't think he'll ever want to crash packs. He'll always be after the easy mark. Not someone you can build a forwardline around. Which is what you'd expect from a very early draft pick.

I think McStay has more upside because of that ability to outmark someone like Majak Daw. He can play like Jack Riewoldt or Taylor Walker while Schache is more like Westhoff or Jenkins.

Jaidyn Stephenson born in January. Would have been one of the oldest non-mature draftees from last year I imagine.

It'd be interesting with reference to first year winners of the rising star. Lewis Taylor was born in February, for instance.

And interestingly Stephenson's under age TAC Cup year was way better than his second.

No it wasn't, Stephenson may not have kicked as many goals but he averaged 5 marks and 5 tackles a game and after the champs he averaged 28 disposals playing as a full time midfielder. He started the year slow playing as a forward getting poor supply but after his 5 goal performance in the champs he was the the most prolific player in the TAC.

I was devastated we didn't draft him... Was unbelievable in the TAC cup end of last year. I have got over it now... Rayner is going to be some player and has a great attitude.

This year I'm on the Rankine train. I think with pick 5 he will still be there, with some doubts on his attitude. With Fages and Hodgy he'll go great guns over here.

St's will go one of the King's I think, with their shortage of quality talls really exposing them this year following Riewoldts retirement.
