Given the media discussions/speculation, I would say it's more likely several clubs would inquire as to his availability...rather than a hypothetical scenario of Beams asking.

Actually getting all conspiracy theory here it might even help us shake the tree a little and find out what other clubs are willing to part with in the upcoming trade period.

In that scenario I think it’s more likely the Suns would miss out rather then the AFL hand out priority picks to the Saints and us as well. Suns will have feee agency compo to go with the decent draft picks they already have. Carlton would get a PP and that’s be all they hand out.

End of first round pick is fair for GC and Carlton. We got it so we can't complain when others do as well. Can't see them getting a higher pick than that. Though I hope that it is decided before the trade period so they have the chance to trade it out for a player if they want.

As for Beams, I hope he stays but I think IF he asks for a trade it will be similar to Gibbs a couple of years ago where he would like to go but is happy to stay if a deal can't be worked out.

It seems a bit silly that both Carlton and Gold Coast get the same assistance for being down the bottom of the ladder when their problems are so different. Another early draft pick is a much bigger boon for the Blues, who can be confident of hanging onto that player, than it is for the Suns.

Perhaps the national draft should only be for 18 and 19 year olds then there should be a separate draft held afterwards with the same draft order for anybody not taken in the national draft and anyone older than 19. This would help out the bottom clubs hopefully get some decent mature agers and make them more competitive.

Funny thing is end of Round 1 picks 19 & 20 will just end up being a replacement for both teams 2nd round picks they traded...which are presently 19 & 20

PP criteria

The final decision is now at the complete discretion of the AFL as opposed to relating purely to finishing position.
Several factors determine whether a club is offered a priority draft pick:
The number of premiership points that a club has received over a period of years is taken into consideration, with greater weight being offered to more recent seasons.
A club’s point percentage (points for/points against x100) over a period of years is also taken into consideration. Again, there is an emphasis on recent seasons for weighting.
Finals appearances and premiership wins in recent seasons are also taken into account.
The AFL will also consider a club’s injury rates in each relevant season.
To eliminate tanking, the formula for priority picks is kept confidential by the AFL Commission.
The AFL may also offer priority picks to newly established expansion clubs to fast-track the club’s development. Clubs are typically required to apply for special consideration for the priority pick through the AFL commission.

Percentage would work against us but injury rates might help. We've had a negligible amount of injuries yet only will win 4 or 5 games.

I don't think we will or should get one though.

I agree, loosing a Tom Lynch to be compensated with a draft pick at any number just puts the club back a few year there are not many 18 year old Key Position Players that will make an immediate difference in years 1 or 2. I favour the AFL either topping up some free agents pay outside the salary cap to go to the club or giving them something like being able to have 3 or 4 priority picks of payers over 20, not contracted in the AFL playing anywhere in Australia. Kinda like Essendon got when they all went out for the year. The club would then get to keep 1 or 2 of those player on a rookie list for the next 2 years. Then Priority Picks or Compensation Picks would be able to be used to plug the hole left, they maybe could be supported with and extra draft pick but at a lower round so the top 18 kids get spread around.

Would be hard for them to reject it if they give Carlton/Suns one.

If the Suns beat us on Saturday night no way they get a PP unless we get one as well, it would be almost impossible to believe the AFL could give a PP to a club that finished above us and not us with our record of the last few years.

No it wont. We've had a positive year and got a PP recently.

We deserve a PP just as much as Carlton or Gold Coast, irrespective of the fact that we already received one in 2016. It's now been another two full seasons since we received the last PP, and we still find ourselves languishing at the bottom end of the ladder (despite showing promising signs of improvement). We have the worse win-loss record in the AFL over the past four years, and we haven't played finals for the best part of a decade.

On Carlton, they have chosen to (consciously) trade out and move on experienced players such as E. Betts, Z. Tuohy, B. Gibbs, L. Henderson, J. Garlett, J. Waite, S. Grigg, M. Robbinson etc.

This is a vastly different situation to either Brisbane or Gold Coast, who both struggle to retain players in a highly competitive market where AFL is not the dominant code.

St Kilda for mine definitely aren't in contention for a PP. MAYBE if they have another poor year next year.

Carlton - W-19, L-67 with an overall average percentage of 70.73% (Last finals appearance - 2013)

Gold Coast - W-20, L-65, D-1 with an overall percentage of 72% (Never played a final since being introduced in 2011)

St Kilda - W-33, L-51, D-2 with an overall percentage of 86.38% (Last finals appearance - 2011)
