It would be great if we could manufacture a way to get both Jared Cameron and Tom Berry. Not just for the brother factor (although that is a big selling point), but they are very good prospects in their own right.

Seems impossible given what we will have to pay for Neale?

Interesting discussion on the Draft board in regards to a 2019 draft prospect, Cooper Stephens from the Geelong Falcons.

He's (Cooper Stephens) a good kick. His spacial awareness and vision is fantastic too. If Sam Walsh and Ned McHenry had a kid (that massively outgrew them), then it would probably be Cooper Stephens. Takes traits from both players.

Maybe Bicks and Pie 4 Life could give us a little more info on the kid.

Measurable's: D.O.B 17.01.2001 Height: 187cm Weight: 70kg

We all know how we (me) like a Geelong Falcons kid.

Discussion in 'Brisbane Lions' started by dlanod, Jan 1, 2018. ;)

I have enough trouble working out this years crop without moving on to 2019.:shoutyoldman::huh:

Just to play devils advocate here , what is people's opinion , as this is the best draft in years should we not to taking kids at first and second round instead of trading those picks for players ? Even tho lockie is a top player
Have we moved from stock piling talent a year early

Thoughts
At first I was very hesitant to the Neale trade for a number of reasons. Firstly, the club had said a 3yr plan in regards to the draft so that was pretty well much my thinking. Secondly, that we should be building as much talent as we can whilst we are in the lower parts of the table. However my thinking has changed, we do already have some very good talent on our list currently and the acquisition of a couple more senior players could assist in their development and not having to do a lot of the grunt work. To add, we are most probably going to be trading out of this draft only (who knows about next year) and we have been able to identify some very good players in the top 25 of other drafts and would back the club in to be able to continue do that in future drafts.

Just to add, this notion of a very good draft or super draft is a bit of a fallacy IMO. Last year's wasn't highly looked upon and I have been pleasently suprised with Rayner, Cerra and Stephenson to name a few. I reckon the club will be diligent either way. We trade in a very very good mid and hopefully Wallis as a good mid with FA or we draft a couple of highly talented kids and have another crack at senior players next year.

In an ideal world it would have been good to hit this draft hard and grab a couple more potential elite kids but when you have an elite inside midfielder in the perfect age bracket putting his hand up to possibly come to our club you take the bird in hand rather than cross your fingers and hope we get similar next season.

Firstly, the club had said a 3yr plan in regards to the draft so that was pretty well much my thinking.

I think it's worth noting that if you're going to use the club having a three year draft plan as a point, the fact that the club considers this acquisition either worth trumping that plan or alternatively may have actually been incorporated into that plan (given we didn't get to see the details of the plan) should outweigh the existence of that plan. :)

Good size, I've got him in that 6-10 bracket at the moment. Moves well, uses the ball well under pressure, finding more of it too now after not having a huge production earlier in the season. That composure to turn while everyone around him is running at full speed, and not panic, is something really great to watch. I'll try and find the footage of it from the weekend from the replay. I really like him though, VC rep this year so highly regarded.

re: three draft plans...

Our last 3 drafts
2015 - Schache (became Wooler and half of Zac Bailey), Hipwood, Keays, Mathieson, Skinner
2016 - McCluggage, Berry, Witherden, Cox, Allison, Lyons, McInerney
2017 - Raynor, Bailey, Starcevich, Wooler, Ballenden, Payne

(and 2014 we got Andrews who was 10 days away from being a 2015 draftee, but not much else aside from a guy named Beams).

Counting Andrews we've got 6 locks for our best 22 next year (and honestly all potential All Australians over their career) and then another somewhere between 6-9 other potential future best 22 players our of those drafts (that assumes somewhere between 3 and 6 of the remaining 12 fall by the wayside).

I feel like we've been the the draft and have a crop as good as you could hope for coming through together in a 3ish year age bracket. More than happy to compromise on an official third year to get a 25yo AA squad member.

2014 we got Andrews, Beams and I'd count Allen Christensen.

p.s. Rayner.

It really doesn't have to be linear - we trade this year and draft next instead of the reverse. So we'll hopefully still be able to draft some more potential elite talent in 2019 and add an A grade mid this year. Also McFadyen may be a serious player. On top of that Fullerton and Madden could be anything. Good times ahead

Marlion Pickett in week 1 of the WAFL finals- 26 disposals and 4 goals. Would love to add him to our midfield rotation next year. Suns appear to be super keen though and may have priority access to state league players where you'd expect them to pick him up.

He was sublime on Saturday, showed every trait you would look for in a mature age recruit (pace, hardness, skills). Whilst West Perth were awful, Marlion gave his draft chances a nice little boost. A big test for him if he can replicate that against Subiaco this weekend , who are the first team since 1946 to go through the regular season undefeated in the WAFL.

I'd say Gold Coast would be the worst club for Marlion to go to, fingers crossed if he gets drafted its to a good club.

In case anyone is wondering only just... he's in that 31-35 bracket. I'll tell you now you won't have to worry about him going top 10. Or realistically first round. Earliest I see a bid coming in is in that 20s, but Academy players generally get later bids than their value, so potentially it might even be a third rounder. In that 30-40 region is fair. Anyone you put time into, if they're in around the region you value, they are worth the punt.

Listening to Liam Stoker on the Road to the Draft podcast, he's a very mature confident sounding boy, and zero go home worry with him, he said he's very happy to go interstate.

I liked him before the listen but even more now, could be available at our 2nd if we don't use it in the Neale trade. I have a feeling he'll be a late riser though, IMO could go top 10-12.

Could be possible if we get our rumoured priority pick app through. It’ll give us a lot of trade value, but also allow us to pick these kids up. There is a reasonable chance of us getting it.
