Yeah that's all fair. It's also worth remembering Caldwell was co captain of vic country this year with walsh, and was named vic country's best in that u16 champs. I just feel like there must be a large weakness in berrys game which makes him not rated highly by some recruiters and by vic country this year as well despite getting a lot of the footy

Vic Country this year was a bit top heavy with quality midfielders, but lacking in other areas, especially small defenders.

For what ever reason the Vic Country coaches decided to play Berry as a small defender, to play on the likes of Izak Rankine, WA's and Vic Metro's small forwards, largely because of Berry's speed. However this doesn't play to Berry's strengths. He's a contested ball winner, with the ability to go forward and kick goals.

Berry also played the U18 Champs with a broken scaphoid, with ligament damage in one wrist, (which might have been part of the reason why the Vic Country coaches played him as a medium defender) and had surgery on it straight after the U18 Champs.

Oh come on, stop it, now me want very much, very, very, much.

Berry will go later in the draft maybe even rookie. Noble has stated speed and both boys have it. Did a bit of looking after his comments and Will Hamill from the Stingrays was a name I came across as that rebounding defender as a late possibility, maybe.

I still believe Berry will be a top 40 draft pick, and I would like to think worth a pick in the 20 to 30 range.

I'm not trying to sell him as a player to us Lions fans. It's more that from the couple of TAC cup games I watched on youtube early in the season and last year when Berry was fit, he looked like a genuine top prospect.

Twomey's latest form guide.

Has Caldwell up to #9.

No Jordan Clark in his top 30, which I find real surprising.

Caldwell’s always been around that mark which given his injury plagued year and the top end talent of this draft, is an indication of just how good he could be at the next level.

No surprise with Clark getting moved up. I’ve had him up around the 8 mark when I’ve done my last couple of top 15 rankings in this thread. Clubs have him anywhere from 7-15.

I want both.

At 25 Twomey is finally getting realistic on McFadyen.

Yeah, based on that trade we did with the Suns, it definitely felt like Noble wasn't ruling out expecting a bid in the early 20s.

Are we finishing 18th next season SM?
we need to start a 2019 draft thread. Didn't realise he was next years draft crop. Just started to watch some footage of some games as I'm bored. Haven't seen his name pop up on here and thought he is being undervalued. Any ideas on his standing for next years draft?

Right up there for pick 1 contention next year.

I'll leave that to briztoon.

Talk on the draft board (and Twomey's podcast) is he's firmly in the #1 discussion.

Others to watch next year, Sam Flanders from Gippsland Power, Mitch O'Neill from Tasmania and Cam Tahney from South Australia.

However I'm most interested to watch how our academy kids go next year, with the changes to the whole Under 18 competition.

Rocketman1984 is the person to ask about the Queensland kids (and kids from the other Allies states) and who to watch. One thing he said on the 2019 discussion was that one kid, Noah Cumberland, for next year dropped out the academy set up (I can only assume Noah was a Lions academy member being a Sunshine Coast kid). I'd like to know why, if it's possible to answer without getting too "political".

The academy set ups can be really onerous if you arent near the academy.

I have zero intel on Noah specifically, but there are a number of kids who dont accept academy spots at various times.

Keep in mind the kids who excel at footy often excel at other things, it depends on what their concentration is on at any given time.

Have we got any decent kids in the Academy next year?

They arent in the academy if they dont have something, or some connection to get them in.

The truth is it honestly depends on who is where in what they want to do (f!#$ed up sentence but it is true). Footy isnt necessarily the be all and end all.

The cream rises and always has.

So yes there will be a heap of good kids in the academy. See what happens.

Shout me down, but with Beams leaving go back to the well one last time. I'm not sure wether Neale comes to us next year if we don't trade him in but Crows 8, 13, 16 and 22 would be perfect. Another pre-season into the boys and a bit more growth from them to stand up more and take the reigns. Be even better if we can keep Collingwoods 18 and have 5 picks in the top 25.

I don't know how we would get all four of those picks from Adelaide.

Picks 5 and 32 are pretty close in points value to 8 and 16. Ideally I'd rather keep pick 32 and trade out one the picks in the 40's we currently hold. Really depends how many list spots Adelaide has to take to the draft.

Looking at the kids the two South Australian clubs might have their eyes on, there are conservatively 6 South Australians rated in the top 30 of the draft, 4 who are in the top dozen kids. Possibly add in Chayce Jones from Tassie.

Currently from a Brisbane perspective, we look like we really might have traded ourselves out the depth part of the draft, apart from adding academy prospect McFadyen.

I'd like to think we take 4 picks to the draft. 13 & 16 are closer to 5 & 32 than 8 & 13.
I think all the name players move and Adelaide end up with 5 somehow.
I'd like to see us send a player/s to GC as part of the deal

Yeah Hamill is one I like, and think would be a great fit, did really well at combine. Not a good judge of where players get drafted, BUT should be available with one of our picks in the 40s, (if we still end up with one of those picks who bloody knows )

Interesting stat that came up on trade radio this morning - of interstate players signed by clubs 50% go home before their career finishes. This was on the back of Port Adelaide list manager basically threatening Gold Coast if they drafted the South Australians then Port would just get them back 2 years later. Now I know there are stats, stats and dam lies. First draft picks for the Lions (thats not first round draft picks but our fist pick in the draft) we are running at 1 out of 3 or 4 are good players that stay. The odds seem pretty much against a first round draft pick being good and of long term service to your club if you draft from interstate.

Just from a Lions perspective, what other choice do we have?

Trade them away for players that want to be here? Oh wait... ;)

Correct. That would seem the option. I'd like to see that stat broken down by state because clearly the Suns and Brisbane I'd suggest are propping up that stat then the Crows are adding good numbers into that. I think our recent strategy of recruiting kids that no matter where they play would have had to leave home is a good one. Vic Country, Tasmanians and NT players with a sprinkling of Qld'ers.
