Had to have a laugh at this...I'm at the races and wearing a Lions tie. An older bloke just came up to me and said that he had some inside word on who Brisbane are looking at in the draft. This is dead set... "I've heard that if Rankine is still there at pick 18, then the Lions will be all over him". :straining:

and the live draft night thread will be over 1000 pages due to each successive clubs gloating over him falling to them and then coming up with reasons why they picked x instead eventually filled with all of the speculation as to why the other 17 clubs had all passed on him!

Duursma can play as a small/medium defender.

There doesn’t appear to be many HB in the top half of the draft. Clark is the class HB and is pushing top 10. Quaynor is tied to Collingwood. While McLennan is a smaller, more defensive version of Witherden.

Duursma is more a midfielder than a Backman isn't he? Have you watched much I him? Would be interested to see what sort of player he compares to. His leadership qualities certainly are appealing.

Duursma hasn’t spent a second of his time in defence playing TAC, Permenant mid

I thought as much but assumed I was confused!

Thanks for commenting - who would you say Duursma compares to as a player? Does he have the traits to become a half Backman? I know with Bailey he had been a mid/forward but we definitely saw his traits transferable to half back and ended up playing one of his best games in the backline this year.

Thanks in advance.

It’s hard to give a comparison without rating him too highly, id say as a defender he would be a Cam Guthrie type. I like his marking and movement in traffic and his skill set can be used everywhere but I feel the wing is his best spot to use his marking to either get back and intercept and then push forward and be dangerous.

Thanks mate. I haven't seen as much of him as I'd like to make a proper judgement but I have a good feeling about him as a player. My draftee intuition means jack shit though so hopefully it's right lol.

I rated him last year, he played on the wing and looked a million bucks, I’ve had him in the teens for a good couple of years but his lack of polish is the main thing holding him back from my top 10, not that his skills are bad just not at the top level. Kid has a great attitude and to me would have no issues with retention.

He most certainly has spent time in defence. Perhaps not so much this season but he has proved more than capable of spending time there. Certainly not his best position though.

I’ve seen him play TAC 5 times this year and he didn’t play any time in defence, obviously can’t go of every game but from what I hear from others who have seen more than me of Gippsland say the same.

There aren't many small/mid defenders with genuine pace rated in the top 35/40. Certainly not around our first pick.

Jez McLennan is a genuine smaller defender who shows good leadership, but is more suited to kicking the ball out of defence. Looks to be a natural replacement for Hodge.
I get the love here for Jez McLennan here, you don't make AA for nothing, but as a running half back with speed, Jacob Kennerley is the one who caught my eye in what I saw of SA. Tested really well from memory. Could be a good get for us at 30 or 35, with the other pick used to match on McFadyen. So 18 is used on best available player on our board regardless of his position.

If I could recruit for the lions
I'd recruit you Sam . . .
"In the Grand Final he was strong earlier, showing too much speed for Isaac Quaynor, and his strength overhead was a highlight".

“To be honest, the last couple of years I’d always said ‘I kind of want to get drafted to somewhere else’. But until this year, seeing how the club’s progressed and being around the club, it’s just been awesome to see. All the young kids there are awesome blokes, all really humble and respectful,” McFadyen told foxfooty.com.au.

Just shows how hard it is to retain/attract talent, even if we grow it in our own backyard. Thank god we have Fagan, Swann and Noble.

Great read all up TBH. Seems like he's willing to take a pretty honest look at himself at times.

Let him get drafted by someone else then no big loss

That’s a nice story on McFadyen; just underlies the importance of having a solid carnival which he did with flying colours. Amazing that he played as well as he did too with that foot issue all season too.

No the link won't open for me but if he doesn't want to be at the Lions they can draft someone else we need to draft players that actually want to be here
Basically said when the team were so shitty on and off the field he didn't particularly want to be there. Who would? But now he sees it is a team and group with a lot going for it and he would love to be part of it. Nothing wrong with any of that.

He seems like someone who will jump ship if things start to fail not really someone who the Lions need

Quite right. A mature approach. No different than any other person looking for a career in any other sector. Want to go to the organisations that offer a positive environment and recognition of effort and opportunities for growth. He belongs.

So we should draft exclusively players who support the Lions?

If you had read it, you'd probably have read that he does want to be here. Probably best not to comment so harshly if you didn't read it all, hey?
