Was there not talk of something happening in Brisbane on draft night earlier in the year?

I thought there was an LI post that said it was unlikely because all the relevant people are generally either at the draft or are based in Melbourne, i.e. Sam's nights usually get a couple of the local recruitment staff, but the top level guys (including those based in Brisbane) are usually at the table in the draft.

I suspect that the club thinks there might not be the interest in Brisbane either - they've had a couple of similar type of nights during the year that by accounts on here haven't been all that well-attended.

Chaycee Jones
Liam Stocker
Xavier Duursma
Riley Collier-Dawkins
Jez McClennan

If they're all available at our first pick who do we pick? I'd personally rule out the half backs. Rate Collier Dawkins & Stocker the highest for our needs. A premiership is built on midfield depth. I don't think Collier-Dawkins will be there (reckon pick 15ish) but hoping Stocker is there. Let me know some thoughts out of those 5 or anyone else i may have missed that could be a good shot
1- Liam Stocker.
2- Chayce Jones.
3- Xavier Duursma.
4- Riley Collier-Dawkins
5- Jez McClennan.

I'd be happy with any of those 5, all a chance to be gone by our first selection, Jones likely to go top 10 IMO.

I'm with WhiteLionFeva in that I wouldn't rule out Ned McHenry at our selection, best pressure small forward in the draft.

I'm going to assume that you're counting Duursma as a half-back given you think there's more than one in your list. While he can play there, he's just as good playing outside midfield too, so he's a good value option, although I don't see him lasting to our pick.

I'd think Duursma or Jones would be the preferred of those. One of them to be available at our pick, O'Halloran to slide to our second along with McFadyen and Berry Jr would be great imo.

The only reason Curtis Taylor keeps being picked in phantom drafts is because he is friends with Rayner. Can't see it happening.

Kevin Sheehan picked Curtis Taylor in the road to the draft phantom draft at pick 21 apparently bestmates with Cam Rayner

Awww gees, I've only just started listening to the podcast, up to pick 8.

*Spoiler Alert*

Interesting that between Sheehan and Twomey that GC ended up with all three of the top rated SA kids.

This and Sheehan literally says as much too for he reasoning.

I'm actually coming around to Zac Butters and reminds me of Zac Merritt and would have him and Duursma as my two favourites but not too sure if they will be there. I would then go McClennan as that intercept mark in the backline is now quite the critical part of our game and apart from Harris not sure if we have anyone else like that on our list, out of the rest I would then go RCD, Stocker and then Jones but I've gone cold on Jones, jack of all trades but a master of none.

I agree as well. I think we are ok for midfield depth especially when we add mcfadyen and more than likely tom berry (i reckon he would have made his case at the berry brothers fundraiser while fages was there) with later picks. A running half back and a pressure sm fwd, both with speed, is what i think should be the focus of our first two picks. If the focus for most of the clubs will be mids, i think we should be near able to get the best available in those positions if we go with our first picks. Id be very happy if our haul ended up being
Best avail running half back,
Ned mchenry,
Connor mcfadyen,
Tom berry,
And coleman from our academy.

I am a bit of a fan of jackson hately, i know he will be gone by the time we get to pick. I think he is a ready to go inside mid with good stats playing against the bigger bodies in the sanfl. Who ever gets him will have a rising star on their hands and possible winner. Big call i know, thoughts?

Very surprised that Berry junior has fallen so far. Early in the season he was playing mid iirc and he was doing very good getting good possession numbers, tackles and clearance numbers while also going forward. Then he had to move to HB l think because of oppositions small forwards and they put him there because he had that burst of speed. I remember when he had that ppurple patch, l didn't think he would last to our 1st round pick.

Agree, but surely if Jones is likely to go top 10, he's the best option at 18, if available?

So.... how will I know who you are?

Will you be near the bar, near the food or demanding Sam present David Noble to you 5 mins after the last pick is taken? :p

I’ve never met someone from bigfooty ‘offline’. :grimacing:

Dylan just needs to look for the guy in the golf hat, right?

Pretty much I am of the same opinion. Curtis Taylor does not provide much of a point of difference when we consider the structure of our list. We already have his type covered by McCarthy, Wooler, potentially McFadyen and currently playing similar position Rayner. I don't think Shifter looked at our needs, he effectively as he indicated, it would be nice to bring in Rayner's best mate. Hopefully our recruiters would be drafting on something more tangible than just nice to bring in best mates. Having said this I reserve the right to applaud our recruiters genius when they do call out Taylor's name on draft night.

I havent seen curtis taylor play so im only going on write ups. From what ive read his strength seems to be his ability to find the goal and his offensive work in the fwd 50, and the potential to go thru the midfield. He doesn't have above average pace and no mention of his fwd defensive pressure. From that, he doesn't seem to be a player that would fill a need for us. But, if im wrong about his fwd defensive work or if that aspect of his game can be improved he becomes a bit more attractive.

The idea that his mateship with rayner makes it a good plan to get him does hold some water. The way clugg and berry have settled and pushed each other has been great. We have also linked mates neale n mccarthy. If it benifits retention and encourages improvement its worth considering. Having said that, we dont need to waste a list spot for a companion pony to a race horse unless that pony can win some races down the track.

Draftin someone based on friendships is always something to look at. However it's evident that Rayner has settled in well and made some great mates amongst the younger crew so not sure that would be a reason to draft someone.

If we start compromising our draft picks to get players’ mates in we’re in a worse state than I thought

Defensive dearth sees Kosi 2.0 shape as top-30 pick - http://m.afl.com.au/news/2018-11-09/defensive-dearth-sees-kosi-20-shape-as-top30-pick

A LACK of tall defenders in this year's NAB AFL Draft could see Jacob Koschitzke, the cousin of former Saint Justin, be a top-30 pick when names are called in two weeks.

Gold Coast and Brisbane have been linked to the 18-year-old, who was named an All Australian defender after a strong championships for the Allies.

If we're looking for a defender with a late pick ....... one that caught my eye (particularly in the TAC Cup Finals) was Koschitke's team mate at The Bushrangers, Nick Murray. Haven't seen much mention of him "around the traps" ... don't know why. Not a "tall Tall", but plays taller than he measures. Good intercept marking prospect for mine.
