Can’t stop watching that little video clip.

He's got a hell of a fend off on him.

If he and Rayner simultaneously fend each other off at training, it might create a Higgs Boson particle.

Agree. I remember when we drafted Polec, I was thinking, yeah in about two to three years he'll be able to hold is own as a footballer. Here I am looking at Smith thinking damn, he looks like he could split anyone in two. Fearsome.

I'm seeing 'Ely "the axe" Smith' after reading that BB.:p

Rayner would be stoked!

Smith would acknowledge the event with solemn silence.

So if gc fly them up tomorrow for a look see do they get to go to a few schoolies functions? Gotta get the Coast lifestyle happening.

By Schoolies functions you mean 'getting shit faced & passing out on the beach'? No one from the gold coast likes schoolies, they avoid Surfers like the plague during it.

This is brilliant.

Jeez, you "nailed" this information!
Haha this draft I learnt which sources I can trust and which ones I can’t that’s for sure.

David King is such a twat carrying on about the manner Sydney acquired Blakey and calling for an overhaul.

No doubt the AFL will again react to another thing a northern club does that is smart.

Shits me to tears this type of overreacting by the likes of King. No doubt had Collingwood done the same thing, King would be praising what a smart move it was.

First up, welcome to the Brisbane Lions Ely Smith. I hope you have a long and successful career up here.

My personal draft thoughts.

I didn't mind the new format. Having grown up with the NBA draft and ESPN, and having watched it for the better part of two decades, I could see many similarities.

For those commenting on Carltons trade with Adelaide, and saying they thought our pick trade with Gold Coast was a better deal. I disagree. We traded our 2019 first round pick for a late first round, early second round and mid to late third round pick. Carlton traded their 2019 first round pick for a late first round and a mid to late first round pick. I dislike both trades, but Carlton's trade is no worse than ours.

I was really hoping Connor Rozee made it to GC's pick 6, as I hoped to see Gold Coast draft 5 SA kids. They could still have Jez McLennan and Jacob Kennerley available at their two second round picks tomorrow.

F**k I hate Port. And not just because they took Duursma. They really nailed each of their picks.

As for the Lions. It was as I feared, and made comment on at the end of the trade period, our first pick really fell right at the beginning of that zone where I felt all the second tier kids were off the board, and we were picking at the beginning of the third tier kids. There just wasn't a player I was super keen on when it came tour first pick.

I am hoping two players are still on board at our second round picks. Sydney Stack from WA and Fraser Turner from Tas.

It's not my idea of a fun time but we just dropped my boy to surfers in the hope he at least gets to listen to bands on the beach. He spent 4 days doing schoolies in Noosa and it was horrible. He and two others who are relatively sober beer drinkers spent two nights clearing vomit out of the mouths of passed out underage absinthe drinkers and doing 3am searches to drag the drunks who were going for a swim off the beach. Surely the gc has to have few better options than that.

Edit sorry for the diversion. I like that Ely got a late inclusion in the rep games yet seemed to shine. Shows ability/desire to prove himself and step up. Love that type of determination and grit. I think it is a key indicator of long term development and success. Won't find him sculling absinthe.

I'm torn. On the one hand, my little spreadsheet didn't really have many players still available who were jumping out at me - no great sliders available for us. On the other, from rough talk there were 8 or 9 other players still attending the draft, who it's fairly safe to say many other clubs rated above Smith (or else another club would've invited him earlier). If our recruiters rated him, fair enough, off we go... But if he was a reach at that point (and I think the evidence of no one else wanting him at the draft suggests it was), why wouldn't we look into trading down a few spots?

Ah well - Noble's great at running a football department, but he's always prioritised getting what he wants over getting value.

Kudos to Sydney on shrewd maneuvering and getting what they wanted AND getting value. And I think Carlton will do very well out of their trade.

Well, now we just wait until tomorrow! Onwards and upwards.

This smiling thing is ludacris and some of the comments on insta and FB are terrible, no doubt the family will read them. What a shithouse way to welcome a kid to the team. Clearly just his temperament.

Didnt mind the new format, pays homage to the top players and picks, Id usually zone out after the top 10 unless it was our picks, really got into each selection this time.

Hated morris's 'leaving home' muck raking.

I thought he was quite pumped about coming to the club, albeit without having given it s great deal of thought. Surely you let it sink it before making such grand assertions (not you personally).

What are you referring to when you say Morris muck raking?

Carlton traded likely pick 2-4 (2019) for pick 8-10 (2019) and pick 19. I think they did quite well out of that.
Our trade with Gold Coast was a pick around 6-8 (2019) for pick 19, a future second and a future third. I think Carlton did much better. If we pair our GC trade with our Collingwood trade though (and the two are linked), it looks much better if the Pies finish 5-8 rather than 1-4. That's the hope that doesn't have me writing off that trade as lunacy.

Agree about us missing out on those second tier kids. I was counting it down, and just hoping one of about 3 or 4 players slid. Apparently the clubs above us agreed, because they all disappeared.

I didn't mind the new format, but I also wouldn't have minded if they sped it up a bit. Maybe force 3 minutes, but allow up to 5 minutes, rather than forcing 5 minutes. The first pick was just boring waiting for it, but that is fairly similar to your US sports.
