Have no idea why, but I feel s let down after the draft this year. No longer feel like the kid opening a present at Christmas. A wonder if it’s because our first pick was so late. Not sure, but it’s a strange feeling for drat time.

It's because your parents already splashed out big time on Lachie Neale for your birthday.

Does anyone have a report from the Draft Dinner tonight? Would be interesting to hear how the club thought the day went down, specifically our picks in the second.
Really rated Berry (obviously), were shocked that Joyce slid so far, and were happy to trade back in to try and get Ainswurth when they only had to give up a fourth rounder because NM had it surplus after matching their bids.

Supporters of teams heading down or struggling look forward to the draft. Supporters of teams at the top or heading up look forward to the season.

Answerth certainly unusual, daresay he will be referred to as Ainsworth once or twice

Copy and paste was my friend for Bosenavulagi!

Now we need to get that other name from down the road next !

"Answerth low flat kick to Ainsworth, who takes a running bounce along the wing looping handball back to Answerth, Ainsworth throws a shepherd in for Answerth releasing him back into center square" etc etc etc

for me - bring it on. The draft was nice, yes our picks were down the line a bit but I like what we got and if we don't see them play this year I'm fine with that. I'm excited that we have quality that will now be allowed to develop in the reserves until ready and we are not playing kids against battle hardened men. Just great to have pressure for positions and more than likely a nice shiny new cup in the cabinet come NEAFL grand final time. I just have a feeling something really good is about to happen. I know marketing, been in the trade for 25 years, and I know the vibe clubs want to portray every preseason but I feel something bigger is happening now. Just little bits of what players have said, how tight the groups seems, how unified and focused management is, how hard they train and outsiders comment, even social media posts - a marketing department can't control everything and I've had teams of over 50 professional marketeers. Call me positive but lets get ready for the ride - group hug all - bring it on.

Is it just me or did Answorth have the best looking highlights package
No, not just you. Answerth’s highlights seriously impressive, looks like he could develop into that running half back that we need, the type of player that can win games because they start counterattacking play. What was also noticeable about Joyce, Berry and Smith was their run, how they hit stoppages at speed and accelerated out of them. We’ve recruited contested ball winners who run hard and attack which is a good sign. I can see McFadyen starting forward, then swinging into the midfield as Rayner and Berry rest forward. His versatility is a weapon that will be hard to match up on. Looks like a pretty good haul to me, especially given the recruitment of Neale, Lyons and Adams in the same offseason.

I feel as a club we are in a position now that we don’t have to rush these boys in.
Only when showing form that is hard to ignore should they be promoted. And/or injuries to others.
Should be great competition for spots throughout the year.

Really feel we have done exceptionally well at this draft . All draftees seem to not only have the physical and athletic attributes to make it but seems quite smart players as well .

Midfield rotations in few years of ,

McCluggage , j berry , Neale , Rayner , Bailey , Smith , McFayden , Joyce , starcevich , t berry , cutler , Cameron etc .

We also have a lot of flexibility for next years draft with having collingwoods first (14-18 range) suns second (19-21) range plus our 2nd and future first.

While Smith looks good, it’s Berry and Joyce who look like batter value picks.

Get the feeling Berry will be more of a utility. Has great attack on the footy. Joyce is quick and skilful and also has great stack on the footy.

All seem to have more upside than guys like Keays, Matho and CLyons.

I’m not sure which is getting in the way of what.

Being a new dad trying to follow the draft.

Being at work trying to follow the draft.

Or trying to follow the draft while being at work and being a new dad.

I know which one my wife wants me to give up, and funnily enough it’s not being dad or following footy.

I really like all the kids we drafted.

Would have liked a little more outside run though.

There’s going to be a lot of competition for midfield spots in both the senior and NEAFL teams.

Added to that, there’s going to be more pressure on the likes of Robinson and Squizzy to hold their spots as well.

Will have to wait and see how last years and this years draftees shape up during the season, before guessing next years delisted candidates.

Have a mate whose business went under, relationship with dad broke because of it, was depressed. Became a stay at home dad with new born and he's a changed man. Would do it myself if I could!

Despite not having the early picks we’re used to, I think this could be one of our better draft hauls of recent times.
Smith with his country background, berry, answerth and joyce injuries, McFadyen cricket focused until last year - you can mount a case that they all have huge development left (or at least potential development) due to lack of consistency, or exposure to elite programs over a long period

Yes, I thought we might have gone for someone like Fraser Turner or Jacob Kennerley to get run, but it might be all we need to add next year... or maybe we'll get it from Joyce & Berry & Answerth (in defence), who all look fast.

We do already have Cutler, McCluggage, Taylor, Allison and Bailey, so maybe we figure we're right for run.

Joyce's underage champs stats at 20 disposals a game are impressive. As is Smith's 30 disposal effort for Vic country in his only game.

On top of that our new high end recruits don't feel the pressure of being the messiah to a talent deprived team. Now they just blend in with the rest of the young guns and play NEAFL until they are ready
