Potential to play all three.

Can run like the wind, jump and catch. It would be awesome if we can get him.
Pretty sure the kid can nominate which club he'd like to play for, and is signed as a Cat B rookie outside the salary cap (is my understanding).

We must be due for some rookie list luck. From memory, Hanley might be our only real success story in the last 10 years?
We were lucky and then unlucky with Clarke. A few others probably got close to 50 games (Golby, Begley, etc) but never kicked on.

Another problem was that for large chunks of that time we weren't using all our rookie spots to save money. We had more luck but arguably a worse team when guys like Corrie, Stiller, MacDonald and Drummond were getting 100-ish games off the rookie list.

Yes but can he leap tall buildings in a single bound?

Looks like we're out of the running for the Jack Lukosius cup, confident we'll end up in front of Carlton and St.Kilda and maybe Gold Coast and/or Fremantle.

Starting to get on the Jackson Hately train.

The only downside to Carlton finishing bottom (and I’m not advocating for us to finish last), if there’s one team almost guaranteed to bid on opposition clubs F/S & NGA kids is Carlton.

Might need to rely on Essendon bidding on Blakey & Thomas early.

Oh, and Carlton are desperate for mids as well, they could always draft Walsh.

I wonder if we did finish 15th or 16th whether or not we’d look at options to trade up to pick 1

I doubt it. I think there will be players we highly desire at the pick we have.

“Stop trying to make Lukosious happen, it’s never going to happen” ;)

The only thing l worry about Rankine is how consistent is he? He looks very flashy but we need midfielders that have some substance, we know what we will get with them. Which is Why Walsh looks good because he will probably average around 25 disposals and make others look good around him as well as having a good mix of contested vs uncontested. GC wanted to have a lot of flashy players over substance e.g. Hall etc. and they aren't particularly high on the ladder. Plus, l wonder if Rankine is more of a forward or mid/forward which is where Rayner plays.

I'm inclined to agree. Walsh and Bailey Smith are the two I'm keen to keep an eye on during the champs in terms of players that fit that "pure mid" description. I still think Connor Rozee is the stand out this year. His production is not at the same level as some others, however, in terms of traits that are transferable to AFL level he possess just about every trait you'd want in a young prospect. He is currently playing a half forward flank role in the SANFL Seniors but I think he projects as a midfielder long term and will have a similar rise to Tim Taranto throughout the draft year moving into the midfield later on in the year and entering top 3 discussions.

Was only just reading up on Bailey Smith a bit earlier. Smith and Walsh are aerobic beasts clocking just over 6mins with Smith beating Walsh at the IMG camp in Florida. The national champs will begin soon and it will be awesome to see the elite play against each other. Smith's kicking is rated as better then Walsh's and does accumulate more inside but I think Walsh does have a bit more break away speed. If we go to the draft for where we are at we definitely should be able to add some more class to our young list.

I'm excited to follow the quartet of mids at the U18 champs this year, Walsh, Bailey, Rozee and Hately. To see who pushes their claim as top mid, and see if others push up to challenge them in the top mid stakes.

I'd love to see Rankine play more midfield minutes, but I'm not sure if that will happen at this stage of his career/physical development. Playing SANFL is a little different than playing TAC cup, where the teams in the SANFL are playing in a serious competition, and individuals are playing a team game, with set roles, where as at TAC level, recruiters often ask for kids to be played in certain positions or roles to gage their potential.

Sorry posted this in the wrong thread thus morning, but I Read the ESPN "May AFL Draft Power Rankings" and I like the following midfielders.

Bailey Smith
Sam Walsh
Riley Collier-Dawkins
Curtis Taylor
Thomas Berry

Not in any particular order

From what the club has said, and many fans on here, the hope is that Rayner transitions in to a full time inside mid, or something close to 80/20 mid/forward.

As for Rankine, he has shown the ability to go and get the ball and has good contested possession numbers. Long term, you would hope Rankine develops along similar lines to Zorko, HFF that transition more in to the midfield. I read plenty of comments from people questioning Rankine's size and build, and think to myself there are plenty of players his size that impact at AFL level.

In McCluggage's draft year, I questioned his ability to put on size and play a contested game. At TAC cup level, McCluggage played as more of an outside player, than what he is playing for the Lions this year.

Long time reader, first time poster.

I think with efforts like Saturday we can safely say we won’t be getting Lukosius (as much as I and many others want him) and Walsh seems a safeish pick and fills a need.

With that in mind we should be definitely throwing coin at Tom McDonald. Would instantly improve our side (signifantly imo) and would come “relatively” cheap.
