Will need to string a couple more games together I think before people start to take real notice. Not sure I'll have a "special" this year. Not watching as much footy as I'd like. Only just caught up and watched the replays of the weekends U18 games today. Not going to post my thoughts as it has all just about been said on here. What I will say though is that Bailey Smith is my favourite player in this years draft. He has it all, elite endurance, ridiculously high drive to succeed/work ethic, burst of speed, elite foot skills, wins his own footy, runs defensively and sticks his tackles. Going to be a gun! I'd be just as happy with Sam Walsh though. iIf we can add one of those two to the likes of McCluggage, Berry and Rayner gee our future midfield looks good!

Not sure at this stage.
Noble has come out asking about the proposed rule changes and has openly stated that this would affect their drafting. Don't think it would have mattered so much with these two as they're the best mids and will be around our first pick but it certainly helps that they have the running capabilities (poor Matho though). Either one of the two to add will be exciting to see but also hoping that our second pick would be added to the mix as well as Bailey.

Riley Collier-Dawkins would be fantastic with our 2nd pick if available, currently ranked 16 on the AFL Draft Central power rankings. Like Jack Bytel as well.
I think come draft day Collier-Dawkins will be a top 10 possibly even top 5 draft choice. He just has too many attributes that recruiters love.

Think KM rates him as potentially the best mid if he can put it all together. If he comes into top 5/10 contention wouldn't be averse using our first pick on him.
C-D was supposedly best on ground with 14 disposals to half time in the VM's first U18 game but went off with concussion just before half time missing the second half of that match hence why he also missed last weekends match. With a big second half of the year in the TAC Cup he could rise e.g. Oliver/Bontempelli/Taranto.

The only reason he isn’t in pick 1 conversation is his running around the ground, doesn’t get it enough and doesn’t run to the right spots to receive on transition like a Walsh or Smith can. If he can improve that side of his game then the sky is the limit.

His tracking well. Averaging 20 disposals and 4 tackles a game at TAC Cup level and was very good for Metro in the Allies win. Such an impact player.

He’s considered top 5 as it stands by a couple of clubs.
How's Bailey Smith being looked upon by clubs?

Interested in other peoples thoughts on this. My understanding is, that if the proposed suggestion was brought in, the top NGA talent wouldn't be exclusively available to the aligned NGA club. Now the article says it won't be brought in this year, but uses Tarryn Thomas as an example; if say the Bulldogs draft Thomas at pick 5, North would not be able to match the bid, and Thomas would end up at the doggies.

Interesting, I wouldn't be surprised if a year 2 after this is brought in they will bring in the same policy for the northern academies.

I would be for the AFL fully funding all academies and all players going into the open draft.

I don’t understand why the indigenous elders have complained. Are there parts of the state not covered by academies?

So basically NGA would only give benefit to the aligned club if the player is draft from pick onwards. So surely this only encourages players to tank their final under age year so they can stay home?

And I agree with jason pm that they would shortly bring it in for northern academies soon after. I wonder if F/S could end up that was also eventually?

Wouldn’t be the worse thing if it applied to all father sons and academies.

This is going to become so convoluted it doesn't seem worth it in the long run but in all seriousness they do have a point because the indigenous youth are dropping out in large numbers. Just give them the area and don't make it so difficult with the 'if they land in these picks their anybody's' and just do it as it currently is.
Anywhere from 3-12 is what I’ve heard. I expect the general concensus to be more around top 5.
1. Lukosius
2. Walsh
3. B. King
4. Rankine
5. Smith

See, easy!

That was my first thought.

You've got a couple of replies already but the basic gist is:
  • Qld indigenous population is covered by the existing academies.
  • NSW is the same, except for the Riverina which is a specific GWS NGA zone.
  • All of NT and Victoria have been divvied up between the Victorian clubs.
  • Tasmania is North's NGA zone.
  • Only the indigenous populations in non-metro areas in WA and SA are part of an NGA zone.
Indigenous kids in the metro areas of WA and SA are the only ones in Australia that aren't eligible for anyone's academy. Hence why the elders have complained that it's unfair.

The WA and SA clubs do have NGA zonings in their metro areas but it's for the multicultural heritage only, not indigenous.

Sounds like a reasonable complaint. I assume the AFL excluded these areas because they have previously produced a reasonable amount of indigenous footballers?

It’s not a new story that the clubs want them.

I guess the issue would be the SA and WA clubs are likely to produce more talent than the Vic clubs.

I think it's a combination of the number produced and that it would only be split between two clubs. The WA/SA metro numbers would probably be less than parts of Victoria or NT for instance, but there's nine and four clubs picking at those respectively.
