Character may decide... Smith is an impressive kid but I've heard Walsh is one-in-a-million in that regard.

And Walsh is a lions fan as well right?

Just sign him up now

I rate them pretty evenly on potential. Walsh probably has the more rounded game and a higher production level as it stands but I think Smith suits our current crop a lot better. He’s one of the more cleaner, quicker inside mid types I’ve seen for a while. He reads tap work beautifully. And we haven’t had someone that can do that since Black.

Watching Walsh today reminded me of Clugs draft highlights just without the same class

If he shows the same that McCluggage has at AFL level we have the makings of another Fab4. McCluggage, Rayner, Walsh, ?.

McCluggage is impressing the more and more I see him, all class with ball in hand and his contested work and tackling has improved markedly and quickly. Big call but IMO in 2-3 years he will be a top 5 midfielder in the competition.

I agree mate.

He's incredible to watch on the field but just doesn't quite put it all together yet. His ability to make space in traffic is something that'll set him apart from every other mid the in league.

One of the most exciting prospects to put on a lions Guernsey in a long long time.

First time I've managed to watch a (almost) full game and I was mostly watching Walsh and Berry (for obvious reasons)
Walsh had 29 disposals and he looks like that player that has a little more time than everyone else around him. Also chased a lot and applied plenty of tackles, so plenty of defensive work as well. To me he is more outside than in, and while we are in more need of a true inside mid, he has class written all over him.
Berry played across half back, did some nice things but didn't get in to the play all that much. Not sure it is his natural position, looked better when he drifted in to the middle of the ground and got involved more. Couldn't see him going in the top 20 based on today.

Thanks trikster, IIRC Thomas Berry is a balanced mid so I'm not sure why he is being played out of position, could be good for us, another slider.

Could be as simple as too many better midfielders in front of him, and yes can only help our chances of getting him.

If we could get a pure inside mid (though we could already have him in Starc) to go with McCluggage, Berry, Walsh (Rayner?, Bailey) that is a 10+ year core group in the midfield set.

Likely another top 5 pick next year for another class mid

And remember Richmond's current success is based on just two high end mids - Cotchin and Martin + a couple of late first round KPP's

Just finished watching the game on playback. Second time I have seen Walsh, second time I have questioned as to why there are concerns on this part of his game, granted I have only seen him twice however twice his kicking has been elite, he hit every target. Whilst he is my preferred target I would not be disappointed one bit with Smith. The thing that caught my eye today regarding the later apart from what’s already been mentioned was his tackling, stuck everything, great set shot and like Walsh covered the ground well.

Are you there marooned or watching the stream? Would love a report on who impressed you at the end of the game if you feel inclined.
Only got to watch first half Jase family duties getting in the way of my footy watching.I think Walsh was working harder than Smith defensively. They went one on one at around the 20 min mark in the first qtr at a ball up.Walsh got front position then clearance went to metro and he threw himself to make the tackle. That absolute will to win is in him thats what I liked. Both are outstanding prospects.

They've got a lot of first round picks that rotate through that Richmond midfield. Prestia, caddy, Conca, vlastuin, ellis

Still lacking outside class. When you got blokes like Lester and Cutler playing those roles you know you have a lack of midfield depth in that area. Cutler will hopefully be a decent player but footy smarts and precision kicking isn't his game. Would have loved Polec right now.
I think Charlie Cameron would be great as a more permanent outside, pace, run, carry player and he is a beautiful deliverer of the ball into the forward 50. We do need a couple more though.

Sam Walsh a class above today, the wider space of the MCG allowed him to run more freely. Liked Xaviar Duursma game early and also Vandameer. Riley Collier-Dawkins is one touch which is pretty impressive for a big mid. Smith played well especially in the last. Will be interesting to see how SA step up when they play VicM as it'll be for the National Champs and believe that you'll see the likes of Lukosius and Rankine really turn it on.

Sam Walsh looked good, but give me Izak any day. He is a match winner. Doubt it will happen but I would love it if they took a punt on him.
