Yo do realise that Knightmare is some random in his 20’s (apparently) with no demonstrated experience or expertise in footy?
Are you saying that the massive majority of draft watchers have no actual idea of what they are talking about and just kids regurgitating stuff they heard other people say?

Dare I introduce the PP in to the discussion?

I wonder if we did finish last, if a PP would be on the table?
If we finish last we should definitely get a priority pick. Would be illogical to give a team one and then after 2 wooden spoons not give them another.
My biggest (Lions-based) fear... We come last again (despite being close in a lot of games), less than 5 wins again... And then Gold Coast lose Tom Lynch. Cue PP1 to GC, and AFL house just spout more "promising young team" garbage about us that they've been saying for about 7 years now.

Come draft night if we don't draft Rankine with our first pick I will throw the remote out the window and torch my footy cards.

Dude calm down, what did the footy cards ever do to you!?!!?!?

Pretty much like the other draft watchers who post on big footy. Except Knightmare does have a media gig doing it. So he's a little more than some random these days.

Pretty much like many recruiters when they start out. You can listen to Twomey's podcasts from the last two years when he interviews recruiters to hear their stories and advice to kids wanting to start out.

What they all have in common. They were/are fans of game, and learnt their craft.

What is the difference between Knightmare and Cal Twomey?

Neither had much of a clue (I'm guessing on Knightmare's behalf, Twomey has actually said as much when he started) when they started. They talk to recruiters, not just about kids, but also what they watch for, how they judge kids, etc.

Now on a personal note, Knightmare's not my favourite draft watcher and commentator. There are others out there, but that's not to say Knightmare's opinions should just be thrown out.

I link as many articles that I think are relevant, readers can then form their own opinions. I just thought it was interesting Knighmare had a bit of a different view.

I’m a bit old fashioned I suppose, I form my opinions from watching games/ players (preferably live).

I am interested in the opinions of guys in the industry with a solid background in footy, which rules out Twomey and Knightmare, although Twomey gets very good draft information and tends to relay it rather than settling himself up as some kind of recruiting expert.

Knightmare is of course the guy who rated Tim Broomhead as the best young player in the game at one point, illustrating not only his ridiculous Collingwood bias but also his pretty poor judgment.

Don't forget KM does seriously over rate Academy kids as well.

Seeing as I don’t get to see these guys live, like many others, I rely mostly on reading Twomey, Anderson (before he took up a professional position), the various AFL draft central writers, Knightmare, etc.

When they show the U18 champs & TAC finals on Foxtel I watch them, sadly not any more, no more Foxtel.

I’ve read stuff from Brett Anderson where he mentions seeing Knightmare talking to recruiters. Twomey, Anderson, Knightmare and others all talk to the same recruiters.

I enjoy reading his opinions but his anti-academy stance does seem to be a factor when rating potential draftees

He’s actually quite pro-academy. He just believes that the AFL should be running them with no rights to any clubs.

I think the point Judge might have been alluding to is that predicting a draft order is all well and good, but if I’m listening to someone about a potential draftees, I’d prefer to hear their original opinions and not be a Metacritic-style aggregator of other people’s views particularly when you have no indication of their sample size.

I appreciate that for some, it’s better than nothing. And that’s fine. I still listen to what these guys have to say. Just as long as you can make the distinction between draft expert and talent expert, or appreciate where the fall on the spectrum between those two. Because by the time you read comments from a draft expert, your hearing about a players pros and cons second-hand at best.

Well it all started with me putting a link up to Knightmare’s first ESPN big board article, which is his opinions, and Judge commenting that Knightmare is just some random with no industry experience.

I’m not here to defend Knightmare, he will justify his articles in his own bigfooty thread.

I don't really care about someone's academy position, but his constant massively overrating of academy players all the way back to Conway and Tickner drives me nuts because it's a really unrealistic view on the players in question.

Twomey is a junior reporter. He gets the order nearly right every year simply because he repeats what the club recruiters tell him. He didn't suddenly have some magic feeling that Brayshaw was rising up the rankings late, he said it because the recruiters told him.

If the club recruiters remained perfectly silent then no one, Twomey included would get within a million miles of the final draft order.

Kids can enjoy pretending that they have some sort of high level of understanding of these things, but pretending is all it really is. Remembering lots of things that others have said is one thing, actually having real insight and depth of understanding is another altogether.

It's way too early to be predicting where most of these players will go in the draft bar a small group who will be top ten to first rounders. As much as we admire Jarrod (getting a man crush myself) has anyone seen his brother Tom play?
I have.....plenty

Very similar player to Jarrod in his attack on the footy and ball carrier, better acceleration than Jarrod but not quite the tank. Was good last year as an under ager but nowhere near the outstanding under age year Jarrod had playing mainly as a running back [U18 AA] . Like Jarrod Tom is too courageous for his own good with the way both boys attack the footy, both as hard as cats' heads. Unlike Jarrod Tom plays mostly as a midfielder in his under age year and at the start of this year. The plan was always for Jarrod to move into the midfield in his draft year but injury intervened delaying his move into the midfield to late in the season when he got his aerobic capacity up to par. Jarrod was dominant in the midfield in the last few games of the minor round working in tandem with Hugh McCluggage, unfortunately in the 1st final he copped a really bad injury to his kidney in a collision that saw him spend a couple of nights in the Box Hill Hospital and that was it for his season and probably cost the Rebels a serious shot at the finals. Think a lot of people had forgotten how good Jarrod was as an under ager and weren't fully aware of his injury struggles in his draft year but then when he absolutely blitzed the Draft Combine he came back into 1st round contention

Tom has it all and I'd think he's a good chance to be a 1st round contender if he stays on the park, I was there a fortnight ago when Tom wrapped himself around the point post with his usual fearless attack on the contest. IMO only part of his game that he could perhaps tidy up a bit is his consistency with his kicking, not that it's that much to worry about. I'd love him at the Crows...:) Don't think Tom would be a flight risk either as he's been living away from home [Horsham] for a few years now attending school and playing for the Ballarat Rebels.
