I'm struggling to see why the Suns would trade an early pick this year (reputedly in a strong draft) for our first rounder next year and steak knives when our star is on the rise and like us they need to get talent into their list sooner rather than later.

This seems like a pretty bonkers draft to bring in live trading. Can easily see a team melting on the clock and doing something stupid

Fremantle.

Agree.
I am not sure why any team would trade a 1st round pick this year for next years. Unless they were super confident they would be moving up the order significantly by doing so, or getting a good player in addition.

It shouldn't be that hard .... choose the player you are going to draft, if you receive trade offers assess is that better than the player. Of not give Gil the player number.
Having said that .... if someone is going to do something stupid thank god it will be live on national tv :)

Is RCD not only got the size of a big bodied midfielder but has the speed and kicking skills of elite players ? Is his main knock on him that he doesn’t get the ball enough ?

I think most top eight teams would swap their first round pick for our's next year. A pick in the 11-18 range this year for a pick that will probably be 1-5? Definitely. They'd only really lose out if we make the finals somehow, but that's crazy talk.

Also what do you think we would have to give up to move from pick 4 to pick 2 and guarantee one of Walsh or lukoscious . Not sure giving up our second rounder is the best option with possibly berry , Taylor and McFadyden there

Yes, covered under my conditions in the post, but why would we do that?

I'm guessing because there's a top 11 we really rate? Your post was specifically talking about people swapping a 1st round pick this year for next years. I can see why the Suns wouldn't, but there are plenty of teams that would.

The 2 clubs we would have to deal with to do that look like being the Suns and the Blues, no way I see the Blues doing it, the Suns could be interested if they end up with picks 2 and 3 via Tom Lynch compensation and are keen on drafting one of the King twins.

Ryan Bastinac and pick 4 to the suns for pick 2 and one of their 2 2nd round picks.

I know it’s alreay been eluded to but doesn’t this FA compensation just influence other teams around them too much . Basically the team that acquires the player strengthens their list the team losing that player can be rewarded via compensation somewhat depending on where they finish but the fallout is the teams around them such as what looks like us this time slip back from pick 3 o pick 4 potentially missing out on 1 of lukoscious Walsh or rankine. If I was noble I would be making this know in our application for a priority pick at the end of the year to compensate us for this but we know that’s never going to happen.

I don’t know about Bastinac, but I wonder whether they’d be interested in Lester who has a long-term partner from Queensland and would possibly want to stick around. He’s had form issues this year but he’s a good age for them, a great professional and a member of our leadership group.

No way we're getting a second round pick in that deal
Who wants Bastinac? Can't even get into our team.
Every year clubs trade in spuds, heaven knows we've done it a few times over the years.:( We need to sell the trade, bring Basti into the firsts soon and start ramping up his value.;)

So many permutations to the Suns with Lynch that may play out to change our position.

Do they match the contract offer and force a trade (he's worth two high end first rounders) or will they settle for just the compensation pick and move on to create other deals. They could also have a back door agreement not to match if they get some mature bodies in the door via separate trade?

Man this is going to be so frustrating for a while yet...

I've yet to see a better solution. I think a mid first round compensation pick should be an option. Realistically Lynch is worth 2 top 10 picks.

Band 1: mid first round (before the finalists) and an end of first round
Band 2: mid first round (before the finalists)
Band 3: end of first round
Band 4: mid second
Band 5: end of second

Would avoid hurting the bottom teams first pick
Really like this idea. The AFL talks about equalisation, this is a huge step that way.

Actually thinking about it. Instead of mid first round. It should be mid first round or after your first pick whichever is latest and band 1 should only be available to non-finalists.

Let's not get too worked up about the draft order just yet and players we may or may not have access to. Things can change very quickly. We lose to the Blues this week and all of a sudden the narrative will change on here to pick 1 is ours who do we select out of Lukosius and Walsh. For now I'm going to head into every Lions game hoping we win starting with this weekend against Carlton. Come the end of the year I'll assess which pick we have and who is likely to be around at that range. At worst(purely from a draft standpoint) it is probably looking like we'll have pick 5, at best pick 1 is still a possibility(Really hopeful we can avoid the spoon though).

If any club is going to match an RFA contract offer, it will be the Suns. They've got a "what have we got to lose?" whiff about them at the moment.
