on tlaking footy this week Tom Browne (I know) said that he had asked the AFL and they had confirmed you can only get a priority pick if you request one.

Given Carlton has said they won't request one we could asusme they won't get one. (but its the AFL so assume nothing)

It truly is a ridiculous system.

It is so simple to just put in place a set of parameters that triggers priority picks and where in the draft that pick falls i.e. start of first round, after first pick, mid first round pick or end of first round pick etc., but I guess the AFL wouldn't want that otherwise it would compromise them being able to make shit up as they go.

Easy to define a way that achieves the AFL's aims why being quite hard to game, e.g. "the lowest placed Victorian club and any teams below them on the ladder get a priority pick".

This is probably of interest to the Lions draft watchers, Tommy Berry out for the rest of the TAC season with a fractured scaphoid. I'm hoping the Crows nab him as I've seen plenty of what he's capable of up close here for the Rebels but I reckon your mob would be pretty keen to get a mid with his express speed and acceleration too even discounting he's Jarrod's brother. Hasn't really got going this season with injuries but he's a gun believe me. His lack of exposure this season probably sees him slip down the draft order so he could be a bargain because IMO he's clearly a 1st round talent.

It will be an interesting choice if he's available at our second. The rise of McFayden makes it more complicated given he's a big bodied midfielder as well. Can't see him getting past any of our picks after our second.

Awful news for him.

Lions will be keen to grab him I think. Wonder if he lasts to our 3rd with this injury

Actually immediately disregard this jackess has outlined why this is an issue.

Thanks for linking that Bicks, I really enjoy reading your thoughts on the D,T&FA board, for those on here that don't frequent that board too often I'd appreciate your feedback.

1) Why in your opinion was he played out of position during the championships?
2) Do you view him as a better "potential talent" than Jarrod?
3) Plays similar to?
4)His likely best role at AFL level?

1. Beats me, apparently they thought with his speed and hardness he was the best match up for Rankine, Hill etc VC had.
2. Where he has Jarrod easily covered is speed and acceleration, so for that reason alone I think he he can be the better player, mind you as you probably know I have always been a big wrap for Jarrod and it comes as no surprise he's doing so well.
3. Tom Berry.:)
4. Midfielder that can get forward and rattle the scoreboard.

Would it?

TOTALLY from left-field… Why not give ALL teams that do not make the finals a priority pick? Maybe even 2?

  • Change the draft to favour the 10 teams that didn’t play finals – The first 20 picks to only go the bottom 10 teams.
  • Priority Picks A - 18th to 9th in order of finishing, so 18th = pick #1, 17th = pick #2… [picks 1 to 10, cannot be traded]
  • Priority Picks B – the 10 teams that didn’t make finals – to get picks 11 to 20, via lottery/random selection of balls from hat. [these can be traded BUT only the selection position/order of putting hand into the hat – so trade pick is unknown until drawn out]
Not sure where the compensation for free trade movements fall but thinking after Priority pick B for bottom ten teams and after 1st round [30+] for finals teams?

Might seem a little harsh on teams playing finals and loaded in favour of teams outside/missing finals but isn't that what we want a cycle that might allow most players the opportunity to play finals during their career? Who knows, could something like the above help lower teams succeed/play finals within 3 to 5 year time frame?

They say we copy the NBA and NFL, but NBA and NFL select from college teams not high school teams. I propose this:

Introduce a college system i.e.: AFL reserves where teams draft players from age 18 years of age for 4 year contracts and get players get some sort of education with this.

After 4 years do another draft i.e.: Senior draft where teams select players from the AFL reserves. Teams get to match bids on players they currently have.

IMO lets everyone see 4 years of development and at age 22 players are normally starting to hit their straps. (players can play seniors or reserves)

What are your thoughts?

Scaphoid fractures can sometimes be missed on a first X-ray, so there is a chance he continued playing on, if an x-ray was clear.

X-Rays certainly do miss fractures. When I hurt my neck the X-Ray missed the fracture but the MRI picked it up. Hopefully it was picked up after the initial injury.

Yeah, I think one of the footy shows/radio programs? recently suggested something similar allowing the kids a bit more time to mature at home. The question is will this work for the interstate clubs? Will VIC clubs, for arguments sake manipulate if they stay at home?
Personally, I'd prefer just the one draft when the kids were say 20/21 years of age. Can they play local senior footy, similar to say our NEAFL call-ups, both with or without being linked to a club or Academy? Yeah, I think so.

I think they should raise the draft age but it's going to be a difficult process.

Would need to be done gradually e.g increase by 6 months each year
The main reason for raising the draft age is related to the lads' schooling, exams etc without the pressure of juggling that with their football so much.
In most cases it would involve the draftees spending a year in the "real world" before being drafted to get a better perspective of life outside of football.

He had a horrific collision with the point post at Ballarat's Mars Stadium cracking in hard as Tom always does very early in the TAC Season resulting in a concussion and missing 4 or 5 weeks so witnessing that in person it could well have been a result of that. Pie 4 Life might know more.

Yeah and hopefully reduce the chance of homesickness given they're a year or 2 older and have had a chance to experience more instead of going straight from school to footy.
