So the Treloar, Weller and Boyd trades arent swaying you at all? You're a negative chap.
I wasn't giving you a hard time. Lighten up.

Treloar - 4th year player. Players tend to drop in value early, and then as they have more exposed form, go back up.
Weller - Contracted. Freo held all the power.
Boyd - Contracted. GWS held the power.

There are plenty of other two-year-and-out players you could've looked at. If you've chosen them as precedent though, I'll see your Treloar/Weller/Boyd, and raise you a Schache. Better fit for precedent too - shows how our current list management team have dealt with players wanting to go home. Though I'll happily admit that the obvious refutation for that is:

Schache - Contracted (pro), but coming off a down year (con), and rumoured mental health issues (unconfirmed con), so (unconfirmed) compassionate grounds.

End of the day, I think we should back ourselves in and take Rankine if we think he's best available. So do you. I think it if fails, we'd get ~pick 15 back (if he's played well), you think >10. Cool bananas.

I'm not sure why you think I'm being "heavy" or that I thought I being given a hard time.

I'm not seeing the value in the Schache comparison. My assumptions on Rankine's trade value are based on him showing that he is going to be a bonafide star. Schache fell quite short of that benchmark.

The contract status of the other players is relevant, but it's more likely than not for most new players to sign extensions these days regardless of their intentions, so we could end up in the same boat.

But yeah, it's all hypothetical, but let's lean to the optimistic side rather than the Eeyore side. It's a good time to be a Lion.

Worse case scenario we have Port or Adelaide giving us basically a full refund in 2 years.
The big issue is we have to start over again. And my mind goes back to first-rounders like Gram and O'Bree who left in spite of a winning team. Culture isn't going to sway everyone.

I fully accept that the rumours surrounding a player might be overinflated or even flat-out fabricated. But if he pulls a Wingard on us in an interview, it's not a gamble at all - it's virtually throwing your money away.

If losing Rankine has the same effect as losing Gram and O'Bree I won't be too worried.

And we don't have to start over again. We may be able to attract another talented player. We may someone in the reserves ready to step up and take his spot.

Yeah two years of development down the drain regardless of compensation - not something we as a rebuilding team can afford. But our guys have some good form and if there's an inkling of go home factor they may draw a line through him.

Got to get him first. We are a very good chance to win on the weekend. If we do have the opportunity to draft him guaranteed we will break bread with Adelaide and see what their best offer is. Anybody asked a reasonable Adelaide supporter what they would give up for him?

As an aside, why have we spent so much time this year discussing what Adelaide might give for Rankine but not what a Vic club might give us for Bailey Smith, Max King or Sam Walsh?

Is it because Adelaide have a few picks to play with or is it something about South Australians?

The Victorian clubs who have the picks to maybe offer up a trade for our pick 3-5 is pretty slim pickings. First 2 picks-

Saints- 4, 58.
Bulldogs- 5, 41.
Bombers- 7, 30.
Hawks- 9, 27.

They would have to include future picks or a player to get it done, eg. Josh Green and pick 7 from the Bombers:'(:frenchfries:.

That's why there's been the media speculation. They have three top 20 picks and there's some good SA talent, so 1+1 equals speculation that the answer will fall between 0 and 4.

Future picks. If I was Carlton I'd offer their 2019 first for anyone drafted in the top 5 including Rankine

I'd be offering up our 2019 first for a pick in the top 4 in a heartbeat and maybe for a pick in the 5-9 range.

With our possible improvement and the feel good stories going around about our prospects I don't think too many teams would be taking the chance with us, they could end up with pick 18.

I would be tempted to offer our first and second next year to Carlton for pick 1

Can’t see Carlton going for that. They need help now.

Would we trade our first pick this year to Carlton for their 2018 second round pick (currently pick 23) and their first pick next year?

Actually i’d give it some serious thought. Especially if they failed to land some midfield talent during the trade period.

With the added bonus of a year of death riding Carlton (who will certainly be free of the taint of tanking that year for us)

I think it'd be worthwhile remembering in these hypotheticals that Noble said at the Fan Forum that he didn't like trading away our future picks. I don't see it as something he'd really go for. But still possible I guess.

May not be the first thing in mind, but for the right offer we would be stupid to not consider it

Rankine number 1 on your draft boards, Len? He is a special player.
Would be thrilled to get Rankine,as I doubt Walsh will still be available. We need to keep finding matchwinning talent...like Rayner and 'Luggage. I think McFadyen may also come into that category. My next wish is for Skinner to get through, which would be a massive bonus,as he would create great flexibility in a team. If either Payne or Ballendon make it,we will be premiers in two seasons, our talent would be far in excess of the doggies, just need the belief, and luck with injuries, although they didn't even need that.

Would love skinner to get a good run and become an absolute beast at chb . Imagine skinner and Darcy being able
To hold down the 2 key forwards and then having Harris just floating through taking intercept marks . Rankine 100% if available have a mate who works in media and covered the lions in pre season said the boys absolutely want to bleed for Fagan and that hodge has been unbelievable . I’ll back rankine to see the chance of a flag I’m few years . The swagger is back you can fill it . Lions by 28 points tomorrow

I am still hoping we try to move up the draft to make that happen
Was thinking this lately. Not sure how it would look on draft night but it would be great like the NBA where you can trade for players already drafted. If Walsh and Smith was taken then I would go all in for a trade for Walsh. Pick 5 (at worst) and next year's First rounder and third thrown in for good measure. Can only see this happening if Suns draft him because if he goes 1 you basically have to sell your soul.
