Us getting a PP is unlikely and the AFL telling us what to do with it is even less likely.

i agree that it is unlikely we get one, but i wouldn't think it is unlikely they tell us what to do with it. Getting another young 18 year old doesn't do anything to help us on field, we need older heads to help us

At best we get another end of first round pick- IIRC we drafted Berry with the previous PP. Would be nice if we drafted Berry Junior with another similar PP.

Hi Guys just a question, is it this year that the AFL is wanting to introduce live trading of draftees? Or has that been shelved.

I like Rose idea of instead of a priority pick a team gets priority access to the mature age talent. Kelly would be pretty handy right now.

Probably will be live trading of picks, not draftees.

The priority pick actually ended up netting us Cameron.

We on traded the priority pick to Port (who then traded it to Sydney) for their 2017 1st round pick.

We then death rode Port all last season, and ended up trading their pick to Adelaide for CC.

The pick for Berry came from GWS when we traded our 2016 pick 2 and later picks, for pick 3 & 16.

The main thing for us was really the loss of Hanley.

I'd be totally fine with us getting a priority pick straight after our first that we had to trade for established players.

If other clubs try take the piss at the trade table we should be able to bank it and try again the next year. That will make the offers more legit, especially in this draft.

Seems a more sensible approach to helping poor teams get better faster, but as it makes sense, the AFL won't do it.
Love the idea. The problem is that it'd show the AFL up. They won't force players up here, and no player worth pick 2 is interested in coming up here. So we'd have to accept a middling player and a pick in the teens for pick 2, which defies the point. We've got plenty of Bastinac/Bell quality players looking for more opportunity... Unless the AFL decide to do something to entice a player up here, enticing clubs to give up players won't help.

Not so sure. It end up as Hanley and the PP out, Charlie Cameron and Cedric Cox in.

Unless you mean that it was better off for us to move Hanley.
Nah, just that it was Hanley for Ports 1st round pick (Charlie Cameron), with a minor pick downgrade from 19 to 22. I don't really consider the pick downgrade as a significant factor

Though, of course, looking at our Richmond trade in 2017, pick 19 might really be worth pick 22 and 26, so maybe the club did see it as a massive pick downgrade (yes, I'm still irritated by that trade).

Yep luring talent has been a problem. Could also see something slightly underhanded like pick 2 for pick 4 and a fringe player, would be hard to control.

If the AFL was to enforce something similar to that, arguably a mid-first rounder would probably do the job.

Seeing the Brisbane need help thread getting bumped, just reminds me how reactive the AFL is with such things, really need to get on top of these things earlier.I was thinking something like the old system would have some merit, where multiple seasons finishes under 4.5 wins qualifies you for a mid-first rounder (after finalist seems the fairest.) However once the club hits a certain benchmark (say 12 wins over two seasons) they forfeit their next available second rounder, if a club receive multiple assistance they forfeit second rounders in multiple drafts.

Basically the AFL gives a slight pick upgrade and immediate access to one of their future pick without having to trade (not incurring the premium to do so) It would minimize the bad look of tanking as you need to repay something semi-reasonable. Also the draft a team goes in with only a first rounder and third rounder onwards, a decent chance that on the back of an upward proformanxe they'd be looking at free agents to fill that void.

It's pretty crazy to think we are looking forward to the draft this year so far out, but I actually am. I'm ATM not even looking forward to watching our next game. We are not playing with any synergy or connection which we put on display in the last 10 or so games last year. So alas the draft it is.
1. First Target has to be Walsh , barracks for Brissy and is gun mid!!
2. Another midfielder, game is based around dominating the midfield. I prefer to see a left footer in the mix. A wingman.
3. Half back flanker with class , left footer.
4. Ruckman , we have nothing developing at a young age. Bailey Williams

It's very easy to say draft lukocious because we need another key forward but our team needs a mature age key forward to go along with our young forward line. So I would be targeting a key forward in the trade period to take pressure off Hippy. Forget about the josh Walker types who are very inconsistent. We need someone who you know exactly what you r getting with him. A bit like when Leigh brown left nth and went to the pies.

Walsh is an aerobic beast and will be able to play wing (not adverse to contested footy though) in the mould of Kelly and Gaff. The reason his numbers are so high is he is able to get to so many contests.
We need another inside mid and Hateley was one I was interested in but he is rising fast. Another elite kicking HBF would be beneficial and eventhough we have Cox (needs to learn to tackle) one that can rebound by foot to cut the lines. I think we're set for rucks but if we delist one then we will need to bring in another. The main thing that I would like to see in all of our draftees is a bit of a hard edge to them and not shy of the contest.

Lukosius already doing well v men so you would think he could be effective from day 1

Would be very hard to pass on Walsh though especially being a Lions fan.

Under-18 Academy Series – Brisbane Academy vs. Gold Coast Academy

The Q-Clash rivalry was in full effect in the second round of the Under 18 Academy Series as the Lions and Suns faced off. A brilliant seven goals to zero first term by the Lions helped set up their 12-point victory. The Suns would claw their way back throughout the match kicking 11 goals to four over the final three terms in a display of guts and determination.

Standout performers for the Lions included small midfielder Jesse Quint, racking up 20 touches and a goal. Caleb Franks totalled a massive 37 disposals to lead all the ground in that category, while snagging two goals himself. Thomas Griffiths was also impressive gathering 25 touches and rebounding well across half-back.

For the Suns, Bailey Scott again was in the best players, collecting 19 disposals and two goals. Labrador midfielder Cooper Portelli had 25 disposals and eight marks, while Matthew Smith kicked three goals up forward.

Max King’s draft standing won’t be affected by ACL rupture

JON RALPH, Herald Sun
April 24, 2018 8:00am

VICTORIA’S King twins are destined to be top-five draft picks despite a weekend in which Max King ruptured an anterior cruciate ligament.

The 200cm brothers were playing for Haileybury College when King was pushed into a point post.

Scans on Monday confirmed he has torn his ACL.

INCONSISTENT: DEES HAVE TO EARN TRUST, SAYS GOODWIN

MARK ROBINSON: CLARKO STANCE IN BAFFLING

BIG HIT: MRO GIVES BURTON KO THE OK

With Max off, swingman brother Ben was thrown forward and kicked 11 goals from 17 marks.

Ben had been considered a top-10 pick this year but could rise up the charts if he can prove he is equally adept in attack.

The twins are managed by Robbie D’Orazio, who was called by AFL recruiters yesterday telling him Max’s injury would not change their draft plans.

The likely No.1 pick before his injury, Max should be able to complete an AFL pre-season and be back somewhere near Round 1 next year.

Ben was exceptional in the recent AFL Academy game against North Melbourne’s VFL side, competing strongly against Braydon Preuss and Mason Wood.

The Sandringham Dragons duo are set to be the highest pair of brothers taken in a draft, eclipsing Steven and Matthew Febey (picks three and 16 in 1986) and Harry and Ben McKay (picks 10 and 21 in 2015).

D’Orazio said Max King had been assured the injury would do little to affect his draft position in November.

“I have already been inundated with clubs telling me it doesn’t change anything,’’ he said.

“They will still back him in. He is an elite talent and they are saying nothing will change.

“I look at it as something of a blessing in disguise. He is doing year 12 and can focus on his upper body.”

Sandringham Dragons talent manager Ryan O’Connor agreed it was only a short-term setback for Max’s AFL career.

“They will still be lining up for Max. He still has lots of upside and will spend his time in the gym,’’ he said.

“It was a real weekend of highs and lows for the family. Ben swapped forward after he went off and kicked 11 goals.

“Ben is on the move. Clusb really like the fact he can play at both ends. It will be hard for Max, but there are a lot of players who have done ACLs early and played a lot of footy.”

In a recent TAC Cup game against Oakleigh Chargers, Max kicked 8.5 and Ben had 20 possesssions, nine marks and kicked a goal.

Seems odd to me... I can understand that he's got the talent and that doesn't disappear. But he's missed an important development year, and a player who's done an ACL is always worth less than a player who hasn't... Too frequently reoccur (and if a player has done one, there's a higher prevalence of doing the other as well - I'm guessing physiological weakness as opposed to overcompensation, though King ran into a post, which isn't exactly just a bad twist on a dodgy ligament).

Looking back over the last few years there have been several who have dropped after severe injuries. I reckon it'll be a case of dropping from top 3 to more like top 10 though

That is it. Could have been 3-4-5, now will be a bargain 12-14.
