Well Julia (person who followed Cannons bs Falcons game) certainly thinks that Walsh's kicking isn't an issue! Maybe he had a good day with the boot. Starting to consistently rack up some numbers as well.

Doubt we will be getting Berry Jnr the way he is going. Maybe top 10 if he keeps progressing. I think the only picks we have are pick 1/2 and our 2nd round pick which is probably 19/20 or even lower if their is compo picks etc.
 
Thanks briztoon , always appreciate your links. I haven't been following this years draft class much at all compared to previous years, just starting to get into it now:). Gee Sam Walsh's write up was highly impressive, do you think he could or would you take Walsh over Rankine if it came down to that choice on the night?

It's a hard one. We have so many needs still.

I believe Rankine can be a match winner, and adds serious X Factor.

Sam Walsh is a leader and fills a need as that inside, outside player, who plays both ways, has a huge tank that allows him keep on running. Purely from watching video highlights and game tape on youtube, I do question Walsh's short to mid kicking game. A lot of his kicks fall short, especially to players on the lead who should have a straight forward uncontested chest mark, but they turn in to a 50/50 ground ball with a defender closing fast. He's not playing a pure in and under role, and does rack a fair amount of uncontested possessions, so I would have expected him to have a higher percentage.

Rankine isn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination. Will attempt to use his right foot when he should kick on his left, and can run in to trouble. Also Rankine may be a player who really wants to stay in SA.

There are other mids as well who I expect to push up as the year progresses.

At the moment I have Lukosius at the top of my "want" list. After that, I just don't know. Waiting to see how the U18 Championships unfolds (and I'll be in Vietnam at the time).

Style (Rankine) over Substance (Walsh). As Briztoon covered Lukosius at 1 every day of the week but think Carlton will be there, possibly, hopefully. I reckon this is a draft where we could do what we did in 2016, move back a spot or two for another pick in later parts of the first round. There's a lot of highly rated talent at the top end.
 
Do we actually have anyone in the academy this year that might warrant say a top 20-40 pick, or will we be free to use as many early picks on others outside the academy as we can?

There’s been next to no talk about this years academy kids. In past years, there’s always been talk about academy kids from their bottom age year.

Living locally I went and watched Walsh yesterday, her write up is spot on. His kicking was impressive. He amassed 30 plus coming off the Forward flank. What really stood out was the way he covered the ground
 
Hi all, Firstly nice to find a forum to discuss All things lions as where I live they are a rare thing!

In Regards to the draft, there are many Ifs, but and maybes but one thing we can bank on is a top 3 pick where we probably can’t lose. From what I’ve seen and heard lukosuis is a tremendous talent that doesn’t come around every day and lots are saying you take him at 1. While he is a need (we have many) TAC don’t play with zones and in AFL they do. Many top taken forwards in recent times have really struggled in the AFL - Tom Boyd, Paddy Mcartin and Josh schache to name a few. However in saying that KPP’s take time to develop so especially in Paddy’s case probably too early to call. We really need a player who can take a big contested grabs and from the footage I’ve seen he doesn’t really do that.

Walsh on the other hand seems to be a class accumulator who works hard and is a cut above most other mids in the draft. Plus being a lions supporter should be a lot less of a flight risk and you’d think would wear the jumper with pride. That’s a big tick. Only knock is his kicking, which can be improved but is crucial in today’s game.

Rankine seems life the safest bet. By the looks of things has that X factor and can go forward however we already have that in Rayner (I hope).

Just wanted to share my thoughts, looking forward to seeing the draft class progress and looking into it more!

Lukosuis doesn't play TAC cup, he plays in the SANFL.

Welcome!

While a gun KPP prospect always looks good, we really need to boost our midfield. We may find Bailey and Starc develop into gun mids but they are largely unknowns at this stage (rate them both though). If we are able to snag Walsh, his skill set would really meld well with McCluggage, Berry and co as he adds a different dimension and will probably end up taking Beams' role long term if he were to get drafted by us.

We really need both. I can't help but feel you've cherry-picked the forwards who've underperformed a little, but thinking about it a little more, in recent times I'm struggling to name good key forwards taken early... Lynch, Daniher maybe. Cameron arguably would have gone early if he was in the draft pool.

In the past the stats have shown the the good/great forwards were taken high in the draft and your chances of snagging a good one outside the first round were poor - think Franklin, Kennedy, Roughead, Riewoldt x2. Brown and Hawkins would have gone early if not for being father-sons. Guys like Taylor Walker and Ben Brown are the outliers. It may be now that the trends have changed, but I still think your chances of landing a good key forward rely more on early draft picks than mids. Probably not by much though.

Walsh - voted unanimously by peers to be captain, turns up any place any time, consistent, uses ball better than most realise, reminds Luke Power of a Simon Black with his mental strength and want to work hard.


B.King - kicked 18 in the latest two weeks


Rankine - quiet amongst the group, all business on the field, plays a lot of sports basketball/afl/sprinting.

Agreed they seem to produce some top tier players, but I'd still rather Harro and Hippy then Mills and whatshisface.
