If you were spending the last few years thinking about your future and where would be a great place to work for the next 10 years, had connections to all three places and you had a choice ... would *you* pick Lions or Kangaroos over the Swans????

Swans tend to get the rub of the green with F/S and Academy players. Not necessarily a large number of players, but real top tier quality players.
Danihers picked Essendon over Swans, but it all goes to show that AFL draftees would rather stay in their home state and we're all familiar with that attitude. I don't know of a single kid that had multiple concrete options and chose to go interstate (Murphy, Danihers, Blakey).

Pardon the interruption.

Commiserations and congrats on your measured response on the Blakey issue. The North folk have gone off the air on Blakey with some wishing broken legs etc. Your mob has a good coach. a terrific bunch of youngsters and a bright future. Your mob has a bright future. Enjoy it.

Dont think we will be as civil if we miss out on Chris Johnson's son.

I thought NGAs were supposed to be for people who didn't already have a link to AFL or were in remote communities etc ... not sure that a Lion's Father/Son candidate should/would qualify ... otherwise it is just a diversity academy

I will bash a thousand uncles if the Bombers are allowed to go through with listing Johnson Jr.

I think we just realised Brisbane was never a chance. However, a decent few games to start the season and North fans are telling everyone who’ll listen, they’re a destination club.

Well, it's only the issue that every single person with a brain foresaw from miles off...

My favourite parts: The AFL will see presentations on the NGAs... From Victorian teams only. I'm sure they'll be very reasonable and balanced.

Theyve also marked that 'anomalies' like this will happen early on... Because later on, they'll have had the same kids from a young age, even though they'd have fallen into the standard pathways anyway, and will get to take credit.

Chris Johnson's kid... Freaking hilarious.

I'll be very interested to see whether the AFL shut it down now or give them a few years before they end this charade.

The duffers confuse destination with desolation all the time.

What the hell is it with these NGA's? I thought they were for indigenous kids who were disadvantaged with regards to getting into the system, weren't the NGAs introduced to give them a leg up they wouldn't have received otherwise? eg. remote communities.

I'm sure Chris Johnson's son was always going to find it pretty easy to get into the elite pathway if he had the ability. I'm confused.

Designed for that, but the rules allow any Indigenous Australian or person with foreign ancestry. And all of Melbourne is divided up - so all of Melbourne's foreign communities are up for grabs. I heard (though not sure how accurate) that 2 years earlier and Andy McGrath would've fallen into an NGA.

it's a ****ing joke. Each club will be producing a top 30 pick on these NGA's in a few years as the tape is slowly cut away. Book mark it.

This is a bloody f...... unbelievable joke alright SM, with the NGAs and the possibility of a return to zones for the southern clubs we mise well start getting the white flag ready.

Honestly I'm not sure how we can protest it.

Where was the noise from our club about Nick Blakey?

I do agree that VIC/SA/WA clubs signing up kids already in the system is a rort, but something should have been said 18 to 24 months ago. Not just now.

There is so much about how the AFL is run that is a joke, but until it is a truly national competition, nothing is going to change.

Other clubs had legitimate claim to Blakey. He legitimately grew up in Sydney (which is the criteria for the northern academies - same as us), and he legitimately had a father play for North. We were always the long shot.

The point of the Next Gen academies was to bring in new talent. I'd certainly hope that the club had a real whinge 2 years ago because it was obviously going to be a huge issue. That said, the AFL are closer to a dictatorship than a democracy. You arent allowed to criticise our overlords in the media - you might get away with it, but unless you have real pull (not anyone in QLD) they'll make you pay. So any whinge we had would be behind closed doors.

Trying for CJ's kid is so far from the point of the NGAs as to be laughable. Completely different to the Blakey situation. No one claimed Blakey as talent-outside-the-normal-pathways.
