Roos really showing his ignorance of the situation facing the Qld clubs. Sydney have never had the same trouble attracting mature recruits. By forcing us to trade out our picks the AFL would just be perpetuating the problems facing non-destination clubs.

I dont believe the afl or pricks like eddie maguire have any interest in seeing the qld teams improve. The success of the early 2000's has really stuck in their craw. They want the kudos of being a national competition and the visual of infiltrating a rugby league state so they can pat themselves on the back and say what a great job theyre doing. There's more interest in china, india, and tinkering with the game to be more like the american sports. Mid season trade periods, a 2 day draft with live trading turning it into a ratings circus and a push for an evening grand final for the sake of advertising revenue. They are more than happy to leave us flounder at the bottom of the table, draft talent in then poach them away at the earliest convenience. We're pushing s..t uphill to be successful yet proudly we keep trying.

Sorry, just needed a rant.

Good rant. I'm with you bro

I am not of the view that the footy world wants us, and clubs like us, to fail. They wouldn't mind a side like us being top 8. Indeed, they'd probably pat themselves on the back for a job well done. However, I think that desire to see competitive clubs only goes so far. I reckon that, unconsciously, the "establishment" in footy has a sweet spot when it comes to protecting their patch:

- no more than 4 interstate teams in the finals
- only big clubs allowed to win multiple premierships
- at least one Victorian team (preferably a big club) in every Grand Final
- no big club allowed in the bottom four for too long
- at least three of the bottom four should be a less relevant club (eg the NSW/Qld clubs, St Kilda, North, Dogs, Melbourne, Freo, Port)
- every club allowed to be competitive, as long as it doesn't come at the cost of the above.

They don't want basketcases but neither do they want raging success stories. Every premiership won by a club other than a big club is one less premiership for a Collingwood, Essendon, Carlton etc.

Sydney made top 4 for about five years in a row. Imagine the footy world's response if they'd won 3 or 4 flags instead of 1.

Look at the near hysterical reaction when it was thought that GWS were the next dynasty, against the relative lack of outcry now that they are struggling a bit.

Ask yourself what the "narrative" would be if Essendon, Carlton and Collingwood were all in the bottom four. Yet, Gold Coast, St Kilda and Brisbane? No-one is in crisis talks.

As I said, I don't think it is a conscious strategic decision. And I honestly think the powerbrokers believe they are committed to equalisation. However, at the end of the day, a combination of self-preservation and unconscious bias kicks in to ensure the rich get richer and the poor get the picture. While the people will vested interests run footy, this will be the outcome.

Keen to see another Lukosius champs game with a bit more heat from a good defender and pressure from up the ground, just to see if he can work them over the same.

Very impressive skimming through the game from the weekend though, almost like what Riewoldt would look like running around in the 2s but at the same time taking it easy. Sort of bounds around the ground.

Rankine as exciting as he looks I don’t think would be a good fit for us without filling our mid needs first. Would be like buying a speed boat without the trailer or having a car that can tow it.

I think the financial strain the AFL undertakes to support so many teams in an already over saturated marketplace tells us a lot about their priorities.

I still remember when Gillon said, in reference to Metricon and GCS that the AFL has room for 'boutique' (as he put it) stadiums and teams. Sent shivers down my spine.

Carltank incoming

I think they have it in the bag already. Let's see if Murphy gets shipped out for a Frawley like compo-pick. Anything might happen.

If that does happen, and we aren’t given a PP. I’ll burn AFL HQ down to the ground.

No way should they get band 1 compo for Murphy.

Absolutely spot on!

I'll bring the pitchforks if you organize the torches.

Zero chance Carlton get band 1 compo for a 31 year old Mark Murphy who would be lucky to get more than a 2 year contract when you take into account what a 27 year old Tom Rockliff 4 year deal got us. He wouldn't be getting as much money as Rocky got as well IMO.

If we end up with pick 1. Lukosius is our man. No club in the land passes on him.
I think your dead right. He has the ability to be as good a defender as he is a fwd. Weve tried doing that with mcstay, so he would definately fit into our team structure. A replacement for mcstay in a cpl of years. Makes the spine much stronger in time. A hard inside mid vital with our second pick. Best available then would probably be tom berry. Ive read he is hard, speedy with good evasive skills. Just what we need. I think we also need a speedy medium defender/midfielder that can tackle like a bastard (if one exists) to fill hodges spot when he finishes. Thet would round out our defense beautifully. I think thats what we're expecting from rich these days, but he is a different player with different strengths and still important to the backs. When hodge does go his maturity down there will be needed for a year or two.

Hopefully we finally get a couple of non talls from our academy this year ie. Connor McFadyen and Kiedean Coleman, their profiles read nicely re the type of player we need.

Knightmare's latest draft wrap, Casey Voss stepped up from colts to reserves level and went OK. Also a good write up re Jack Lukosius who KM sees as the best talent he has seen come through the system since he has been following it ie. 10 years.

Reserves

In his first reserves opportunity, Brisbane father-son prospect Casey Voss(son of Michael) was among Sturt's best. The ball winning midfielder secured 13 disposals, five marks and nine tackles for Sturt in their four-point loss to West Adelaide.

That's promising from Casey. If he can hold his spot in the reserves he'll firm as a late national draft or rookie selection.

While I agree with you in part, sometimes it feels like a lot stems from our crap administration in the last 10 years. We have a lot to learn from Sydney on this space. They never let the bloods connection die, while our administration was trying their best to knock off the logo and pretty much antagonize the melbourne base. Sydney brought in Franklin / Tippett well after our Fevola story, but they have managed it so well without having a collateral like ours did. I won't go into "go-home-5" that's well documented - but we were severely lacking smarts around administration under Angus + Sharpless. We could all write a thesis around "how poor management decisions affect clubs" by analyzing our past.

In saying all that, I am lot more happy and content with our current admin+coaching crew - the priorities of the current administration is much more refined and on the mark - facilities, retaining top talent (all the re-signings lately) and trading with minimal fuss (Schache, Cameron for example). While we don't get the winning feeling of bending over other clubs, we are getting good at walking away with some return on investment and using them wisely to fill a need in the list. Finally get the feeling like we are heading somewhere positive.

Quite right. Would like to see how we go with good admin for another 5-10 years before blaming every last thing on AFL HQ.

And I would prefer to be a club that has good trading terms with other clubs, like Geelong/Hawthorn, not like Essendon. But there is nothing wrong with picking up bargains either.
