I'm starting to lean towards Bailey Smith over Sam Walsh, that story about Smith I read during the week was outstanding (it was linked on this board somewhere), and to add to that most pundits say he has cleaner disposal.

That story is nice stuff though but on the flipside you could say that Walsh is a already a hard work and his mad prior investment in the Lions would make him work even harder when drafted as he'd be determined be a part of our resurgence.

Though just looking at on field performance will probably help us keep our sanity at this point.

Who do you like out of Walsh and Smith, LS?
I want to wait till the Champs are over and I see more of them as I’ve only seen Smith play once(TAC Cup Final last year) and I’ve only seen Walsh in last years champs and a couple TAC games. I think I rate Smith higher personally, however, Walsh is a mad Lions supporter and from Vic Country which sort of makes you lean towards him. I think we’d be lucky to add either though as they are both gun mid prospects and will compliment our current young crop beautifully.

Collier-Dawkins is someone I’m keen to see as I’m yet to see him play and he sounds like an intriguing prospect. He found a bit of the footy today(had 14 touches at half time). He is the type who could rise into top 4 contention with a few huge TAC Games at the end of the year e.g. Bont or Oliver. Supposedly has some elite tools as a potential midfielder, height, burst of pace, clean hands, contested ball winning ability and clean skills. Just lacking the production of some other mids at this stage but recruiters look for elite traits and he has plenty to work with by the sounds of things.

Are you referring to Smith's drive and dedication ? Wouldn't Walsh have that too, without having to have it affirmed by a news article ?

It would want to be bloody good to match what Smith has done, he almost took it to Jack Higgins level dedication.

I think you are overstating dedication Jase

I just got done picking apart all the Country players from the game on the weekend and Sam Walsh was just outstanding. It was a complete performance especially in the 2nd half when he had to win more contested ball, its not his natural game but still showed promising signs winning the hard ball and using the ball well by hand. One of his drawbacks for some this year has been his kicking and it was fantastic on Saturday with one of his kicks inside 50 in the last quarter really showing his class, he is the best midfielder ive seen play under 18 football since Josh Kelly.

Just on Berry he is a natural midfielder yet he played no time in the midfield against the Allies, i wouldn't put much stock into his performance although i still liked his attack and he went back with the flight a few times he is just tough as nails.

Walsh Rayner Betty Cluggers Bailey will be next big 4.

Lock Walsh in. Not often you get a rolled gold lions fan this high in the draft.

Bring on the TANK. Get tom berry with our second pick for the romance.

Hipwood and Andrews plus academy offshoots will keep our KPP's healthy.

Unless we take hately with our first. I'm on Berry with our 2nd. We need a pressure mid who can win clearances.
Build a strong team based around brothers a la the Scott twins. Zero risk that he doesn't settle.
There's 11 more weeks of footy to convince me I'm wrong. If country want to keep him out of the midfield & out of the spotlight then that probably works for us

Yeah, I saw that. Clearly I was struggling to take it all in, not knowing the players and concentrating more on the Allies performance. Walsh had 31 disposals, which surprises me, but the stats don't lie. No wonder clubs have a number of people at games... you really can't follow everyone. It was Caldwell's first quarter that impressed me.

again love your work, I was stoked to hear Chayce Jones had a great game, was hoping to nab him with our 2nd pick if he has another standout u18s game could be just a pipe dream.
Just curious what kind of role do you chayce playing at AFL level ?

Couldnt do a worse job than Scott Stiener

This is one of my favourite things ever. I remember watching the initial promo live back in the day and it had me in fits. Gold Jerry, gold!

If only Steiner's mathematics had accounted for the acute Angle injury, he could have foreseen the Flux Capacitor running out of gigawatts.

So Walsh was OK, unimpressive & outstanding?

Just like reading a Lions game day or review thread, or were people not watching the same game?
He was sensational, I challenge anyone to watch the replay and think otherwise.

Thanks dizzysquizz . I know there’s a lot of love for Walsh, but I thought Chayce was more impressive on the day. His run, he seemed to be everywhere and the hurt factor of his disposals were what I noticed. Kicked 2 goals as well. Allies seemed to rotate their midfield more than Country, but he was the one Allies player who was in the guts all day. I see him playing as an inside mid at AFL. Not sure if he will last to our 2nd pick. I think if Allies keep winning, his stocks will rise, but there’s clearly a lot of talent in this draft, so hard to say this early. Cotter was impressed with him too.

Jones is already pretty highly regarded, it wouldn’t suprise to see him taken in the top 20

Hi DPS, I asked P4L the same question, how do rate Sam Walsh compared to recent draftees pre draft? eg. McCluggage, Rayner, Oliver, Kelly, Petracca, Brayshaw x2, Taranto, Cerra, LDU, Dow.

If you feel inclined wouldn't mind a quick power ranking as well.

I can only go of their whole under 18 season to be fair so this is how i would have it

1. Kelly
2. Walsh
3. Taranto
4. Petracca
5. McCluggage
6. Angus Brayshaw
7. Rayner
8. Dow
9. Oliver
10. LDU
11. Andrew Brayshaw
12. Cerra

Also i believe Stephenson and Fogarty will become midfielders and id have them in the 3-5 range out of these players. Fogarty didnt have the greatest year but i believe this was because of his injury, he hasnt missed a beat playing senior football for Adelaide.

So i have Cerra last but i wouldn't say its a huge gap between 5 and 12

Assuming the Lions get an end of 1st round Compo pick - as I doubt we will get to 4-5 wins, I'm hoping we use our first pick for Walsh, our 2nd for Berry and use our compo pick for Preuss. Walsh is the player that is highly regarded and suits our needs and Preuss at 206cm and 22 yo is the ruckman that can take us to our next premiership tilt.
